Topic: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

My copy of KA arrived in the mail this morning and I spent my lunch looking it over, and I have to say I like what I see. I particularly like that there is now a Fighter-Exclusive weapon trait, and for Trek specific stuff I particularly like the elegent and simple way that Tractor beams and Anti-Drones were handled. I briefly considered telling the Boss I was sick and was going home so that I could spend some quality time pouring through the stats  lol
Alas, I will probably have to wait until the weekend to really sink my teeth into the nuts and bolts of the system. Thanks to the MJ12 and the ADB crews for getting this done!
Erik

PS, I can't wait until our friendly neighborhood spreadsheet gurus (you know who you are!) get all the new toys plugged into the shipbuilders so the rest of us can pull out our binders of SFB SSDs and tinker till our clicking fingers go numb!   :geek:

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

I agree, was just leafing through my copy! (Arrived at lunch)

I am prepping for use at Millennium Con XII in November so My playtests can now get in gear!

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

Heh, I hadn't even considered I'd have it yet, but your post inspired me to check the mail.  Glee!

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

After looking at the ship cards a wee bit I was wondering what others thought about giving the Tholians mines to somewhat simulate placing webs? I know that a mine pattern it isn't a casted web, but within the existing Starmada rules it would give you something that at least made the Tholians feel different (especially if they are the only fleet with them). As they are now, they seem utterly bland (that is without any kind of racial flavor to their ships). Of course I intend to try it out on my own.  wink
Erik
EDIT: Having now read the Tholian racial summary which mentions "Web Generators", is it fair to say that they will make an appearance in a future book?

Again, I was following the pattern established by Federation Commander, which included a couple of Tholian ships, sans their web generators. When we get to Tholian Armada (or whatever) rest assured the webs will make their appearance.

Yep,  there were not any webs in Federation Commander either, they come in a later expansion.

It should be 'interesting' to model them in Starmada,  even in federation commander they are considered the most complicated rule in the game and suggests that some players shouldnt even use them if they want to keep their games simple.

I got my copy yesterday and have spent a bit of time with it... looks great.   I really like how the tractors and shuttles were handled and the battle station assaults should be 'interesting'.

My only complaints are minor,  I would have liked to see disruptor armed versions of the orion ships although they could come later, and I wish there was a PDF available for printing ship sheets.  In hindsight I should have ordered the loose page version of the book for easier photocopying although nothing beats printing the ships you need from a PDF.

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

Ship Cards, a thought!

First let me say I LOVE THIS GAME and the fact that we actually have a "Trek" kind of official game now for Starmada.
In looking at page 35, The Federation ships listed list two different "Battlecruisers:" The Kirov and New Jersey subtype, each with BCG and BCJ after them. It might be nice on the ship cards to put the (XYX) designation just for clarification when you have multiple types of ships at the top of each card.
Example: FEDERATION BATTLECRUISER (BCG), FEDERATION BATTLECRUISER (BCJ)

This will come in handy when and if the "upgraded" version come into play: (eg Federation Heavy Cruiser variants) CA+, CAR, and versions of already established ships.

The pages with the Federation and Kzinit have those designations.

So far, I love what I see (not that I see it all that is).

There are so many FC ships that can now be converted over...who knows, maybe X ships?

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

That sounds interesting.  smile
I'm just wondering what Figher Exclusive means and what factor it has.

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

Just a quick question regarding Probes. Are they launched singly as part of the seeker launch phase, singly as an expendable weapon, or can any number of probes be launched as expendable weapons. My instinct is to go with option #2, but I'm just a little fuzzy (I need things explicitely spelled out I guess  )
Thanks,
Erik

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

Need to wait til our local game store gets it in stock  sad

AS they are treated as single-shot direct-fire weapons, any nu,ber can be launched in a turn.

Thanks for the clarification Cricket.

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

Does anyone else have some printing issues on a few of the starship data cards?  I am not sure if this is just my book or a general print run issue.

On both Federation Heavy Cruisers, the Battery X arcs are listed as [AC] [AC] [BD] [BD] [GHI] [GHI] and then there are some unreadable characters printed after the second [GHI].  Are there additional weapon arcs that were garbled in printing?

On both Klingon D5 War Cruisers, both D5W New Cruisers, and both the Kzinti Battlecruisers, the Battery Z arcs are not fully readable.  It looks like the arcs are [C] [C] [D] [D] but there are extra unreadable characters printed over these arcs.  What are the correct arcs?

Yes, the one we have here in our store has the same printing error. The Fed CA additional arcs should be two [JKL] arcs. As for the D5, D5W and Kzinti BC, I am not sure because I don't have my Fed Com cards with me and I don't know those arcs off hand.

It's not all of the copies though as mine is fine. I got mine loose and hole punched though so maybe it's only a problem with bound copies? The Z battery Arcs for both the D5 War Cruiser and the D5W New Cruisers are  [CGHI][CGHI][DGHI][DGHI]
Edit: the Kzinti BC Z-Battery arcs are the same

I have a bound copy, and it is fine.

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

I have one bound and one loose, not hole punched and both of mine are fine..

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

I will try to remember and let ADB know of the problem.

The books I have are printed correctly. Hopefully this was a limited glitch.

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

Can you add the correct Arcs for those 4 ship designs to the Errata thread?

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

I picked up my copy from my FLGS last weekend.  Aside from the missing "range based ROF", this book is wonderful!

Any news about when ADB will make the ship records available as a PDF download?  Xerox works well enough for now, but it's hard to beat the convenience of PDF for printing.

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

FYI I am building up an "Eclectic" mix of Minis for this game.

So far I have:

ADB/Starfleet battles minis:
Federation, Klingon, Kzinti, Romulan, Orion

FASA minis:
Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Gorn

Studio Bergstrom minis:
Klingon (Birds of Prey in scale! I use for E4 Escorts)

And I am looking at:
Future Legends (U.S.S. Kelvin and Klingon "One Wing")

Re: Klingon Armada, 1st thoughts

Also, an interesting place is here:

http://scifiskunkwerks.blogspot.com/

down on the right side is the 1/3788 scale stuff (SFB/Micro Machine scale)

I will probably order a few each of all of them eventually.
