They work, but the Sharpie ink eventually smears. (Why would they make blank dice that don't accept ink?!?)

Most dice are made of a plastic. Having played with casting and having read quite a lot about the materials, I can tell you that there aren't many materials that would take ink permanently, be reasonably durable, be inexpensive to reproduce (the biggie) and be within the means of the average 'small manufacturer'.
