Topic: Greetings!

Hi folks. Not sure why it's taken me so long to find Starmada, but I have -- and I have to say it looks like exactly what I've been looking for in a space combat game for years. So I've grabbed and devoured every PDF on the mj12 site over the holiday break and am now looking at getting some friends involved and also getting set up with Vassal. So, questions:

-It looks like there are several shipbuilder spreadsheets drifting around. I like the one on the main mj12 site (simple, produces both a datacard and Drake notation), but it seems to be lacking some of the later options -- catastrophic weapon damage, for example. Is there an update coming for that, or a different sheet that most people prefer?
-Is the community active playing this game on Vassal? I'd actually like to play the game a couple of times there with someone who can help show me the ropes, make sure I'm interpreting rules correctly and such.
-Are there many houserules kicking around for the latest version of the game, or is there a particular place to post them for game-balance type discussion?

Thanks for reading. Really looking forward to playing.

-Harrigan

Re: Greetings!

hey, Hi backatcha!

there hasn't been much discussion that I can remember about house rules, not because we don't encourage that here, but because, I think, Starmada can handle pretty much any idea you have.

But if you make your own ships, be sure and stick them in the Bourbaki basin, I know I personally troll through there avery time I go to a convention and I usually find all I need to run a good con game (er...) there.

as far as the shipbuilder goes, all I can say is that there are "plans in the works"(tm)...

Re: Greetings!

RE: the Shipbuilder.

I had been meaning to update the "official" one with all of the current options... but that got sidetracked when I started work on an online web-based shipbuilder. Unfortunately, that too got sidetracked.

I need more time in the day...

Re: Greetings!

Thanks for the info -- I'll explore what's out there and be on the lookout for updates to Shipbuilder and whatnot. A web-based version sounds keen. I have indeed built some ships (lots of them, actually), so I'll look into posting them to the Basin. Haven't looked, but suspect that Drake notation must be the way to go.

So onto my fledgling experiences with the game so far -- I've found Vassal to be an excellent tool in running the game solo so I can learn the ropes and see how everything works in practice rather than just in my head (probably won't get to try it with friends live for a month or two, during our next "game night"). I now grok the movement system with all the spiffy optional rules (side-slipping, pivoting, etc.), I've played with damage control, shields vs. screens, I've seen the power of power Countermeasures and Fire Control, I've witnessed the utter coolness that happens when a ship traveling at speed gets an engine hit or two and suddenly can't turn -- absolutely awesome stuff. Vector movement without tracking vectors. Bravo!

House rule-wise, the only things that have occurred to me are regarding shields and Pivots. (I own the Core Rulebook, the Rules Annex, ISS, H&C and KA, btw. Didn't see anything in those directly related to...)

-True Star Trek style shields -- where the hull at least doesn't seem to take any damage until the shield is completely down. My thought here was to make it so that any impact roll that exceeded a shield facing's value lowered that value by 1 rather than going through to the ship's systems/hull. So a D-7 hit by a Phaser in a shield facet with a rating of 3 would have that rating lowered to 2 if the impact roll was 4-6. (Possibly reducing it my more based on IMP or DAM.) I've also thought about having these kinds of shields automatically regenerate, but the more I think about this whole angle it probably makes shields too tough. Anyhoo. Thoughts?

-Pivots bug me just slightly in that after paying thurst for the rotation, you immediately rotated back to your "heading" solely for the ease of bookkeeping. Has anyone given thought to how we could keep the pivot heading -- indeed, even making players pay thrust to get the pivoted ship *back* on it's heading? I have a feeling In That Way Lies Madness, as even that little increase in complexity / bookkeeping will detract from the simplicity and elegance of the game, but am wondering if anyone else has given it thought.

Last question: is there a source of pre-painted minis around? Ideally pre-painted from the manufacturer? I'm *horrible* at painting minis, and for as much as I like these kinds of games, have never gotten enjoyment out of sitting down with the paintbrush...

Re: Greetings!

I've been a little busy but when I get a little more time (probably next week), I will work with anyone who wants to learn more about how to use Vassal. I think it's a great  tool for playing games like this.

Re: Greetings!

I don't like to paint and I'm just starting to try the starship miniature scene.  I'm experimenting with buying the prepainted Star Wars ships.  You can buy a lot of the smaller individual ships online (the fighters can be found for 50 cents) on some of the game shops.  I haven't actually handled them yet so I need to see how they fit on my map and compare them to some unpainted ships I bought as well.  But for painted, Star Wars seems to be the only option.  The good news is that since you aren't involved in the Star Wars rules, you can buy the more common ships for $2-4.  Even unpainted minis seem to work out to about $3 a piece on average.

Another source for prepainted are the Hasbro Titanium line of die-cast. Most are 3-4 inches long and come with a 2 inch long base. I remount mine on a standard 1 inch hex base with a steel washer on the bottom for balance. Even some of the fighters make good capital ships. The Star Wars line is the most extensive but they did have Battlestar Galactica ships too.

Or find some 1 3/4 inch diameter wooden disks and a 1 1/2 inch diameter hole punch at your local craft store. (Hobby Lobby or Michaels type place) Download pretty overhead pictures of starships from the internet, size them down to less than 1 1/2 inches long and print them on a solid sheet of Avery label paper. Then use the hole punch to punch them out and stick them on the disks. These work really well for fighter flights or for creating really large fleets without breaking the budget.

Re: Greetings!

As to figs, what I've done for a friend of mine is take images from the net, port them to MS Paint, and then adjust them a little as needed. For example, for a Star Trek Miranda class, I used Paint to to move the warp nacelles out to the sides, and then I print it on card stock - I glue a piece of foam-board the same shape as the hull on the bottom, and fold the nacelles down after that, I add a "roll bar" with a small piece of foam board for the Torp launcher on top, and it's done. Red marker dots give me the front red launch ports for the torps, but that is optional.

I recently did up a Constitution class for him, but that was done in several pieces, and am now doing a B5 Omega -- mostly in flat views, and them cutting notches so that I can slide one inside the other at a right angle... from the front, it looks like a plus sign (so far, I have an idea on that, and am working on some ways to make them more visually appealing from various angles, but for now, it is functional.

However, the Trek ships seem to lend themselves to this, while the B5 ships are much more difficult (my Larson destroyers for Trek tend to be very easy to make).... I also plan on seeing if I can create a series of scratch designed ships for Starmada.... I'll let you know Dan how that project comes along (trust me, I get distracted as much, if not more than, the rest of the people here)

Although I actually like to scratch build my own figs, my friend absolutely hates the idea.... plus he has toddlers.... and no fig, no matter how many hull points it has, can survive a toddler.  With these, he just prints up new ones at need, and keeps going with it...
