Topic: What size hexes do you use?

Just wondering what size hex maps everyone is using?  Or [heresy mode on] are you using a different movement system that does not require hexes? [/heresy off]

We've been using a mix of 1, 1 1/4, 1 1/2, and 2 inch boards.  Still haven't settled on a standard for our group, yet.  I'm leaning twords the 1 1/2, as that seems to be a good mix/spread, with plenty of room to maneuver a fairly sizeable number of ships, and makes maneuver more necessary since we've limited max range to 18.  Our standard board is 4x6, but for some smaller engagements we're staying 4x4.

My group tends towards 1 1/2" hexes, simply as that's what fits the Megahex counters for Starfleet Battles/ Federation Commander. Though I will say, there are members of my group that would prefer to abolish hexes altogether.

I'm just starting out with Starmada as well, and purchased a half-sized Hotz star map with 2" hexes -- and now wish I had gone with 1.5" as the board looks a little cramped for anything beyond a handful of ships on either side...

I made them into 40mm across.

Alex, it's not hard to leave them behind. Use the hexagonal base for 60° turns and inches for movement. The table is all of a sudden really big!  8-)

We have been using the mapboards from the Federation Commander box sets.  They work well for Iron Stars and Klingon Armada (unsurprisingly!).

If we were to use large ship models (such as the Babylon 5 or Ground Zero Games ones) then we would need to find something with much larger hexes.

I much prefer somewhat larger hexes... the "board" I used to use (the infamous "cat hair" felt mat) has 2" hexes.

What are people's experiences with hex size and ADB models? I've not bought a hex mat yet, but I have a feeling 1.5" will be too small for these ships. Looking at the klingon C8 dreadnought I have a hard time picturing this and a similar sized model placed in neighboring hexes... perhaps even problematic using 2" hexes

I'm using 2" hexes and the CA and D7 fit nicely, I think the CA hangs over just a little, but not much.  Haven't assembled my C8 yet, still moving stuff.  I think 2" is going to be your best bet (for ADB ships) unless you really don't want the ships outside their hexes.
