Topic: Dreadnoughts - Bomber trait

"Bomber: A fighter flight with the bomber trait is specifically designed to attack opposing starships. Because of this, it is unable to make attacks on enemy fighters."

What if the bomber flight is itself attacked by fighters?
Even in WW1 bombers had some machine guns (The very same guns as installed in the fighters) so do the bombers get a shot back?
A fair way would be:-
If attacked by enemy fighters bombers only hit on a 6.
Fighters attacking bombers add 1 to hit die.

Thoughts?

Not sure off the top of my head if dual mode fighters are in Dreadnoughts, but you could design a dual mode fighter/bomber.

One of the guiding principles of SAE is that each trait does ONE thing. So, "bomber" means a flight can only attack starships. As was pointed out above, the dual-mode rule gives you the option of modeling WW2-type "bombers".

OK thanks, just thought I'd ask.

What you really seem to be looking for is a fighter flight that attacks starships at bonus and other fighters at a penalty; sort of a watered-down version of "bomber".

I don't know what you'd call it, but I could see designating a flight that gets +1 to-hit vs. ships but -1 to-hit vs. fighters. I'd give it a multiplier of x1.2 at least to test it out.

Hmm, how about "Strike" as a trait? To me that evokes an image of fighters with heavy weapons not really suitable for hitting other fighters (but not quite bombers) but could do so in a pinch.

Wasn't that how Bomber and Intercepter worked in X? +1/-1 to the hit ship, hit fighter values?

Re: Dreadnoughts - Bomber trait

I like the idea of a fighter-bomber that gets +1 on hitting Starships, but -1 to hit fighters (& strikers, seekers, boarding pods).
Also the idea of an interceptor that gets +1 to hit fighers & etc., but -1 to hit Starships.
The addition of these two fighter traits would be invaluable.  I hope that strikers could use these too. 8-)

I think planes primarily built to attack ground targets, but able to (sort of ) fight off fighters are called Attack Fighters or Ground Assault Fighters - how about Assault Fighters?

Hmmmm - perhaps Fighters need to buy 'Fighter Attack' and 'Ship Assault' as seperate things.

...just tossing out ideas.

Re: Dreadnoughts - Bomber trait

I think we would just call it a Fighter-Bomber as per normal, such as the Bristol FB2 right up to the hurribomber of WWII ...and beyond (as they say).
