Topic: Speaking of Nearly Simple Campaigns...

Took a crack at brewing up my own version of the Simplest Campaign System to suit my tastes (I like a little more lasting damage to systems, for one thing). Very much built on the already awesome one -- see what folks think. It's still a draft, so any and all feedback is welcome. Would also love to see what others have done for campaign rules.

Re: Speaking of Nearly Simple Campaigns...

Looks pretty good.  If I were to use it, I'd probably change the terrain table a little (there's a lot more empty space than terrained space; maybe make a 4+ roll to see if there is terrain, and then roll terrain if there is, replacing empty space on your table with black hole).  Skirmish and Supply Raid also look fun; Supply Raid in particular reminds me of Battlefleet Gothic's similar scenario.  I might vary the classification of 'light ship' for the purposes of Skirmish (some of the fleets I use only have engines 5+), and allow anything with a particular percentage of its hull space taken up by Cargo to be classified as a cargo ship (and be worth VP/RP varying by its cargo capacity), but other than that...  good stuff.

Re: Speaking of Nearly Simple Campaigns...

Good feedback -- just the kind of stuff I was hoping to see. I'm biased against "empty" starmaps just because those with a little terrain on them are so much more interesting (IMO) to play...

Re: Speaking of Nearly Simple Campaigns...

As someone currently playing with the Simplest Campaign Rules right now, (see Blacklancer99's thread), I have to agree with Nomad. The terrain chart should be shifted to create more empty space... although, if you prefer terrain, then it should be shifted only slightly.  wink  But we have found terrain playing a huge role in the outcome, especially with some scenarios.

Good feedback. I'll take the advice and plan on revising the rules today or tomorrow. I think I'll at a minimum limit the dust storms, nebulas and black holes a fair bit. I'll post what I come up with.

That's a good idea. The far out effects of those should probably be encountered less than empty space, asteroids or planets.

Not sure I'm happy with the terrain table yet but I think it's headed in the right direction for my tastes.

Re: Speaking of Nearly Simple Campaigns...

Really nice!  Like the scenarios, and excellent presentation too!  I've also been working on a terrain and scenario table - put this below.  Think the only way to find out if it works is to keep trying stuff out.

1    Planet (sz 2 or 3, 50% chance each), moon on 1-3 (d6), further moons on 1-2 and keep rolling until get a “no moon” result
2    3d6 asteroids
3    Micro planet and 3d6 asteroids
4    Clear
5    Clear
6    Other - Micro planet (1,2), d6 asteroids and Hull 8 independent habitat that fires on closest of either side -  (3,4), dust cloud (5), black hole (6)

Using this for a specific campaign, where there isn't a local nebula.  Like you, I like terrain.  The way I think of it, conflict happens near resources and assets, all the rest is hyperspace.

You're probably going to have to spell out restrictions on terrain placement...who puts what, where they can put it and so forth...especially when mines are a terrain feature  smile
just a thought,

PS I think I have to steal, er, poach, er borrow the supply raid scenario to add to my next Nearly Simple Campaign  wink
