Topic: Hex mat

I plan to play on a 180cm x 120cm table.
I use brigade models spaceships (the biggest measuring about 9cm long), and I would like to know which hex size should I chose.
If I take 2inch hex size, it will have 24 hex on its shortest side. Is it ok or should I chose smaller hex size?

Re: Hex mat

It sort of depends on what size battles you're going to have and how much you want maneuver to play into things. With the 2-in hex mate, assuming a max range (18) weapon, then you have one or two turns before entering into weapons range and will likely remain there (thought not necessarily in the weapon arc) through the rest of the game. The other hand is that you end up with a decent size hex which helps in avoiding miniature pile up.

Myself, I use a 3-inch hex over two mats. Takes up more room but I chose to have more room for my ships than hexes. My last battle had our fleets in shooting distance within the first turn at a range of 15.

Thanks.

Re: Hex mat

I play with Brigade models on 1.5" hexes.  It's a little cramped.  2" would probably be sufficient though.  I have a 3" hex mat for some other games, and 3" hexes are REALLY big.

I think you give up some room for 3" hexes that you don't really need (for Starmada and Brigade models anyway).

Re: Hex mat

My personal preference is for 2" hexes. To the original poster, 24 hexes on a side should be plenty of space for normal-sized battles.

Re: Hex mat

I agree with the 2", and that's what I ordered.

Re: Hex mat

We use the 2" Hexes when I play.  When we started limiting maximum range for Starships to 18 hexes, there was much more manuvering.
