Re: Books to Get You in the Mood

I used to play Starmada a lot in the late 80s & 90s.  I remember reading those excellent books by David Weber and noting that he remained true to the game mechanics.  I used to take out a weapons chard and figure the ranges as the battles were described in the books.  They are well written.

You meant Starfire?
I also played a lot of it, but regretted the latest versions being too complicated (can't understand just the set-up).
Otherwise, Starmada is more interesting as a game.

Re: Books to Get You in the Mood

I kind of like the Lost Fleet series for more "Newtonian" space combat. I keep meaning to do ships from the series, but  I always seem to find something better to do with my copious amount of free time  lol
I like the Leary-Mundy books as well for an "Age of Sail in Space" type combat, but without elite officers, I can't imagine trying to make the Sissy in S:AE  wink

Could you stop talking about good sci-fi series, please?
I'm tend to be more and more poorer.  big_smile
What about this serie?

Re: Books to Get You in the Mood

The Starfist series is fantastic, but it a dirtside pounding grunt series, not a space combat series.  wink

This is the first time I have heard of the Leary-Mundy series. Since I like Drake's Hammer's Slammers I'm going to have to check these out.

Re: Books to Get You in the Mood

I like the Captain's Logs from ADB. Even if you don't play SFB, they always have 2-5 fiction stories from the Star Fleet universe plus scenarios that can be a source of ideas or outright converted to Starmada.

Erik, I hope you're happy. I just bought the first two books in the Leary-Mundy series.  wink

I'd be a whole lot happier if I was getting a royalty for it!  lol
Enjoy the reading!

Re: Books to Get You in the Mood

Honor Harrington books and the Vatta Series by Elizabeth Moon off the top of my head. There was also another series that I don't remember written in the 70s that was pretty good. Used to have them, but they fell victim to one of my library purges prior to a major move.

HA! I REMEMBERED! It's the Helmsman series!

Re: Books to Get You in the Mood

By Bill Baldwin? I think I remember those.

1.The Helmsman
2. Galactic Convoy
3. The Trophy
4. The Mercenaries
5. The Defenders
6. The Siege
7. The Defiance

You'd have to dig around a used book store for those.  wink

Re: Books to Get You in the Mood

I'm quite surprised that no one mentioned the exceptionally well written series The Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell (AKA John G. Hemry).

The Lost Fleet comprised 6 novels which was essentially a massive fleet from the Alliance (good guys) was suckered into a huge ambush in the Syndicate (bad guys) home world system.

Bring in John 'Black Jack' Geary, a hero thought dead a century before who leads the fleet out of the jaws of defeat into a long and deadly trek back to Alliance space, all the while fighting attempts at mutiny, sabotage, and threats on a system wide scale.

Really worth checking out, believe me.

I just read the kickoff book of the "second" series of the Lost Fleet Universe. Without giving anything away, it is really a stage setter for what looks like a very ambitious story arc.  I particularly like the Lost Fleet stuff because Campbell/Hemry can describe a newtonian-space battle without getting caught up in the David Webber trap of feeding you ballistic and trigonometric data until your head explodes. That and he has created a great character in Black Jack himself.
Seems like Lost Fleet would be a perfect fit in Fleet Ops!  smile

Re: Books to Get You in the Mood

The Lensman series is the first ever space opera, and although much of the books are tied up in the personal actions of the heroes there are some dazzing space battles.  Just beware the physics - old Doc has some wierd physics in his book.
