Rebels:    4x Infantry
    2x Laser turrets
    2x Airspeeder
    1x Luke

Empire:1x ATAT
    2x ATST
    3xSS
    1xE-web

“It was cold the day the Empire came to Hoth………..”

Setup- Rebels set up to one side of the middle of the map in Trenchline (Hard Cover), Empire along opposite map edge. Luke does not appear until a Rebel Airspeeder is killed. Generator is along Rebel map-edge.

Victory- Empire must destroy the Rebel Generator (Size 4, AR 0) placed behind the Rebel lines.

Turn 1:        The Empire advanced on-line, Rebel speeders fly across the trenches toward the AT-AT.

Turn 2:     AT-AT fire on a group of Rebel speeders and kill one (Luke placed on the board). Remaining Air speeder units attack w/o success, “That armor is too strong for blasters!”

Turn 3:     AT-AT strikes damaged Airspeeder unit and kills it, AT-STs continue to press forward and engage Rebel infantry. SS and E-web march steadily along.
Rebel last Airspeeder slashes at the AT-AT and damages it (1 hit). Laser Turrets strike AT-ST for a hit on each. Luke runs over to engage the AT-AT, misses.

Turn 4:        AT-AT moves forward and engages a passing Airspeeder(1 hit), AT-ST continue to pound rebel Turrets (+1 hit each). SS finally reach the enemy trenches and lay down cover fire.
Rebel speeder continues to fly in circles around AT-AT (0 hits), Laser Turrets smack the AT-ST (boom!). Infantry returns fire on the SS. Luke throws a grenade into an AT-AT (+1hit).
Turn 5:    AT-AT moves fwd and destroys one Turret, while one SS knocks Luke unconscious. Remaining SS and E-web ties down enemy infantry.
Rebel Airspeeder tries for a strafing run on the E-web (1hit). Remaining Turret pounds away at the AT-AT (zilch), while the infantry throws snow-balls at the SS.

Turn 6: AT-AT moves fwd and blasts the last Turret away. The SS and E-web finally tears a whole into the rebel line (1 inf gone).
Rebel Airspeeder finally makes a successful attack (+1hit). Remaining infantry falls back to converge on the AT-AT.

Turn 7: AT-AT crosses the rebel lines. The SS and E-web pursue the retreating rebels.
Rebel infantry makes an assault on the AT-AT (1 hit). The Airspeeder pilot thinks about changing careers (0 hits on AT-AT).

Turn 8: AT-AT get its first chance to hit the Generator (1hit). SS and E-web catch-up to the rebels (4 hits, 2 inf lost).
Rebel infantry continues to assault AT-AT w/o success. Airspeeder finally does something useful (wipes out E-web).

Turn 9: AT-AT finishes off the Generator (“You may begin your landing.”)

After-action review: Overall not a bad system and I was able to replicate the battle quite well. The biggest issue I had was in remembering to plan my orders issuing 1 turn ahead. (This is actually my second play-through) I didn't have any issue with command points, but that may have been because of the low-unit count. I do think that Infantry need something for Inf vs.Inf or Vehicle assault, maybe double attack dice but the attacking infantry suffer suppression?

Re: The Battle of Hoth

Very cool... I was wondering if someone would try this out.

You did remember that it costs 1 CP when you place the order, and another 1 CP when you activate it, right?

With 2d6 CPs, you should be able to activate an average of 3-4 units per turn; less if you have to spend CPs on suppression.

I do think that Infantry need something for Inf vs.Inf or Vehicle assault, maybe double attack dice but the attacking infantry suffer suppression?

Not sure what you mean by "need something"... ?

Pushed around a few more Star Wars units, little bit larger battle. Made the assumption that technology still favors infantry using short-range but powerful weapons (Thermal Detonators, AP Rckts, Lazer Swords, etc). Tried the following:
1)  Inf conducting STRIKE against adjacent enemy gain Barrage Trait for the this turn only, however the assaulting infantry unit automatically gains 1 suppression marker.

2)  When Inf conduct a STRIKE against enemy Inf, neither unit get the Inf Save feature.

I thin even at the scale of QL, the utility of Infantry is still a viable feature for a battle field comander. And it kept my Imperial Walkers from just marching over the Rebel "Crunchies" for fear of getting a grenade thrown by a want-to-be jedi.

Re: The Battle of Hoth

Nice stuff, now just get to work on some counter images to post.  big_smile

Re: The Battle of Hoth

I'll start you off.
Did a basic counter layout in Page Plus so I can just change the numbers and add a small graphic.
Then it is just export it as a png, Ta Da!
Maybe not brilliant but simple. Of course it would look better as a pdf sheet but that would be overkill for one counter.
Sorry, AT-AT counter deleted. sad

Why do I have the feeling that George Lucas has somehow sensed a disturbance in his copyright material and contacted his lawyers even if he hasn't seen this yet?  wink
It really is a nice counter.
Cheers,
Erik
PS I'm still wondering how much it took them to pay him off to use Droid for the new phones!

Perhaps you are right, some can be party poopers.
Now, if this thread had been called The Battle of Sloth.......
Not wishing to create any problems, I will delete the counter.

Gee, sorry to be the wet blanket  sad  I just remembered all the stories of times  Lucas has used litigation to crush anyone that came close to his money making machine. I'm sure a counter on a forum couldn't hurt...could it? Although, from what I remember reading, I'm a bit surprised Lucas hasn't tried to get a royalty for every child named Luke born since at least 1978!

Re: The Battle of Hoth

Lucasfilm is fairly open to fan created content these days. You can see lots of amateur movies set in the SW universe as one example. As long as you don't try to sell anything or claim the material as your own, you're fairly safe. Note that I am not a lawyer, but that's my understanding of it.

LEGO is nice to fans as well. See http://www.irregularwebcomic.net for an example.

Naturally, if either party complains, I'll happy remove the file from existence.

I put together a spreadsheet to calculate unit points and the Star Wars units here come out very odd. Consistently odd, so they are still balanced with each other, but they are undercosted compared to the units in the book:

Unit Listed VP Calculated VP Difference
AT-AT 21 87 66
AT-ST 9 17 8
Snowspeeder 16 36 20
Rebel Infantry 7 8 1
E-Web 6 7 1
Luke 2 6 4
Laser Turret 8 27 19
Snowtroopers 11 13 2

The points for the units in the book come out a little different, too, but for the most part the differences are minor (and probably due to the changes mentioned in the three questions thread).

Is it okay to share the spreadsheet?

Re: The Battle of Hoth

A question, Is the Lzr turret the Atgar 1.4 FDE P-Tower or the Golan Arms DF.9 Anti-Infantry Battery?

How about an expanded list, please?
I have re-drawn the AT-AT (again), AT-ST and the DF-9 AIB and then realised I did not know if this is the Lzr Battery in your list.
I intend to draw some ( yeah I know I could just copy some but I am fussy) more and convert the counters for Vassal.
Also some objectives like the Hoth Generator and planetary ion cannon.
Edit: From what I have found.
Atgar P-Tower light anti-vehicle laser cannon: Virtually no armour and slow between shots.
Golan Arms DF.9 anti-infantry battery: "B" model (fixed installation) has better armour than "A" model. Rapid fire and has a longer range than the Atgar.
Q.Give the Atgar higher AP than Golan, which is designed for targets with low armour (infantry)?

Re: The Battle of Hoth

I played this scenario yesterday. Had an excellent time. For our first game, we played a few rules incorrectly (made a few attacks with LOS that traced through friendly units, which is a no-no, and we forgot that the rebels had hard cover from the trench for the first couple of Imperial attacks). It plays very quickly and smoothly. The order system is very intuitive, and made for some really hard decisions when you didn't get enough command points.

Good stuff.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_setup.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_setup.jpg</IMG>
Here's the set up. We forgot about friendly units blocking LOS, so I placed the rebel troopers right in front of the laser turrets. Good for protection, but you really need those turrets to deal with the AT-ATs.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_01.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_01.jpg</IMG>
The Empire marches forward! The 1/2" counters are the backs of the custom order markers I made. The e-web is really, really slow, and never made it to the battle. You can see the snowspeeders arcing around from behind. We talked about giving them a special rule that if they used an advance order to attack AT-ATs or AT-STs, they rolled an extra die or gained a +1 to hit (to represent the grappling gun) as long as they moved more than one hex adjacent to the vehicle. In the end, they didn't need it.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_02.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_02.jpg</IMG>
Death of the first AT-ST unit. The dice gods were smiling on the rebels for the most part. Four attack dice, three hits. This is the damage roll that finished off the AT-STs.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_03.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_03.jpg</IMG>
Whoops! Photographic evidence we screwed up. The laser turret has just suppressed the AT-AT unit, but we failed to properly check LOS and didn't discover that until a later turn.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_04.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_04.jpg</IMG>
The Empire Approaches! The empire just blew up the closest laser turret, too. The rebel troops have redeployed in a tactical error.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_05.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_05.jpg</IMG>
Suppressed and under attack. The AT-AT just couldn't wipe out those pesky rebels. The hard cover really hurt, and when the troops did suffer a kill, they usually made their infantry save.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_06.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_06.jpg</IMG>
An overview of the battle. You can see the snowspeeders coming in for the kill. The far laser turret took out another AT-AT before the snowspeeders swooped in. The Imperial player should have waited for his snowtroopers to catch up.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_07.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_07.jpg</IMG>
Luke Skywalker finally shows up. The AT-AT has just shot down the first unit of snowspeeders. He probably should have attacked the shield generator, but those snowspeeders had annoyed him the whole game.

<IMG src="http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_08.jpg">http://www.zeroradiusgames.com/img/ql_hoth_08.jpg</IMG>
The Imperials are defeated, Hoth is saved! (for the time being) The AT-AT tried to move around the snowspeeders to get a clear shot, but they could not hit the flyers this time. The return shot from the 'speeders was more than enough to finish them off. 5+ armor isn't invulnerable, just tough.

Good scenario. We'll definitely play it again.
