Topic: d10 Starmada

Has any thought ever been given to doing Starmada in a d10 as opposed to a d6 format? Seems like it would offer a little more flexibility and range of numbers. Don't get me wrong, d6 Starmada is great (getting a little tired of the FC focus though).

I'd vote against a d10 version of Starmada personally as I think it plays just fine the way it is. I think that adding more numbers to the mix would just extend the ship design portion of things and not really improve the game-play in any useful fashion. The "Starmada-scale" just feels right at the d6 level...anything else would just be a different game. That's just my two cents.
I too have to admit that I would like to see some more non-SFU Starmada in the (near) future, but hey, if people are buying it (and especially if Cricket is expanding his pocket Empire to more peeps) I can't blame anybody for sticking with it for a while longer!  smile

Re: d10 Starmada

I'd have to agree with the rules being fine at d6s. I think switching to d10s really wouldn't improve things *that* dramatically. Plus try rolling a fistful of d10's, I find it's not as easy and doesn't have the same 'feel' as d6s.

As for FC material. I'm glad to see more of it. The more SFU material we get, the more traits that can be moved to Starmada proper. Add in regular distribution thanks to ADB and the game gets out to more players. More players = more income. More income = more Starmada, right? (Especially Fleet Ops. More ships!? Sign me up!)

Re: d10 Starmada

I think d10's should be reserved for games where you aren't rolling heaps of dice at one time.  d6 is fine for starmada because you are rolling lots of dice most of the time.  Given the amount of work that would have to be done to "redo" all the ship building equations I don't think its worth it.

I do like d10 for some games though - Defiance for example!

Re: d10 Starmada

There have been occasional calls for a d12 version, which would be easier to implement as it would allow for a straight conversion of the existing d6 material.

However, I concur that one major impediment would be the fact that rolling "buckets" of d10s (or d12s) is somehow just not as practical as rolling bunches of d6s.
