Topic: What game is this?

A request from someone getting a headache.

Please stop trying to turn Starmada into FC.
I have been following the threads here, on the ADB forum and elsewhere. The impression I get is that some FC players really want to play FC rather than play Starmada in a SFU setting.

The only thing that I would agree with is that SFU ships seem go bang quicker, especially at close range. Probably due to the number of weapons vs shield facets. A small tweak would make the game more enjoyable ( halve weapons, increase facets by 1 or add 2 to all hull sizes.) It is just my opinion but that is as far as any change should go.

There, that's put the cat amongst the pigeons, let the arguments begin. smile

Re: What game is this?

Well... you can come to it trying to "fix" Star Fleet Mada... or... at some point you say, **** it... I'll make my own **** game!!

But seriously... I think what needs to happen is... after your minimum five games played as written before you're allowed to make a house rule for *any* game system... the "FC guys" need to develop their own Starmada game with the core Starmada rulebook and play five more games with *that* before they try to make the ultimate SFU/Starmada homebrew.  That way they can at least understand what the core engine can do out-of-the-box and how easy it is to design ships and tune option sets to taste.

Making a Star Fleet Mada game appears to be pretty freaking hard to me, though.  It seems a better course to roll back expectations temporarily and see what can be done more along the lines of a "simple, but not simplistic" game... and then see how much "Star Fleet" you actually want to tackle.

At least... I can get my fighter fix a lot quicker if I ignore the Star Fleet Universe for the moment....

Re: What game is this?

One of the reasons that I have stuck with Starmada is that you can make it your own game. Conversions from other settings will never be "like for like" to other rule sets and I don't think they should be. If a setting feels right and is enjoyable I'm happy. Do I care if a ship is missing something that is used in another set of rules? If it is not used in Starmada, no.

Every group/club seems to have agreed on what to include or exclude from their games and that can only be a good thing.
A lot of Starmada comes as a choice, much better than rafts of rules set in stone. No "According to rule 32098, as amended by rule 33465.277 cross referenced with rule 4,566,002.224343 I CAN DO THAT!" lol

As I have grown older I find that simpler rules are more appealing but maybe that is just me.

Re: What game is this?

Fair enough.

I've just bought a copy of the Imperial Starmada Sourcebook. That's partly to get a feel for how Starmada "should" play, partly to get a look at some alternate ship designs.

I do notice that most Starmada designs seem to have far fewer weapons than the SFU ships do.

It would seem it's the case, but for me, that's not exactly that.
First, there is the speed at which ships are killed (too many firepower vs too low shields). Then, some weapons do not behave according to what they seem in FC. And note that Star Fleet Armada ships are designed exactly from FC ships.

In the end, my personnel view will stay with me (unless someone asks) as my opponents do not own the books and would not be annoyed with my creation.
