Topic: ESG/Hellbore interaction

I'm not sure I understood how both are working toward each other.
According to the rule, the shield rating is increased (and not lowered) by 1 for each ESG carried by a ship to determine. So it would mean that the shield value is better when resolving impact dice from a hellbore.
Then the example says that the ESG reduces the numer of impact dice. It even says that the shield rating is reduced from 3 to 2, lowering the impact dice to four.
Not only that's not what the rule implies, but I'm utterly unable to find a relation between ESG, shield rating and impact dice?
If the ESG has an effect vs Hellbore, it should increase the shield value (a bit powerful with two ESG) and that's all.
Also, in FC, ESG are discharged each time they are used. Shouldn't they be used only once per turn (vs Drones and Hellbores)?

Re: ESG/Hellbore interaction

Marc, there is an error in the Hellbore/ESG rules. I'm pretty sure the rule is correct and the example is wrong (it came up during proofreading - early copies of Distant Armada had errors). The in-universe explanation is that the ESG soaks up some of the damage from the Hellbore before it hits the shields, so the lowest shield rating of the target is used, with 1 added per ESG.

Re: ESG/Hellbore interaction

As the ESG cannot be destroyed (except if using the optional critical hit rule), they are very potent against Hellbore.

Re: ESG/Hellbore interaction

Yes, that's true. Especially on capital ships which have two, or sometimes four, ESGs.

On the other hand, Klingons don't like Hellbores at all, with their front-starboard and front-port shields rated at only "2" on many ships.

Re: ESG/Hellbore interaction

Another question about hellbore: As there may be many 'lowest' shield facets, which one is taken to determine the shield that will be hit in the event of shield damages?
Or, who decides that?

Decision is made by the defending player.

Any chance we could get the updated rulebook uploaded to e23?
