Topic: The Lone Gray Wolf: a Converted SFB Mini Campaign

In my Star Fleet Battles (SFB) playing days one of my favorite scenarios was the Lone Gray Wolf mini-campaign in the Advanced Missions Rulebook. Here is a rough conversion of the campaign for you space dogs to try out.

During the General War, the Klingon C8 Dreadnought Admiral Kang traveled deep into Kzinti territory, empowered to negotiate a peace treaty. No one is sure exactly what happened... Kzintis claimed the negotiations broke down... Klingons claimed it was Kzinti treachery... but the result was failed negotiations and a Klingon Dreadnought deep in enemy territory and trying to make it home.

The mini-campaign is played in 6 scenarios. One player commanding the Kang... the other a variety of Kzinti ships struggling to intercept and destroy the Kang.

At the start of each scenario the Kzinti player rolls one die and consults the following table to determine their forces for that scenario.

1 - Kzinti Dreadnought Sabre-tooth
2 - Kzinti Battlecruiser Comet
3 - Kzinti Command Cruiser Berserk Frenzy
4 - 3 Kzinti Frigates Keeness, Blood Fang, & Ravager's Talon
5 - Kzinti Fast Cruiser T'Sarnic's Fate
6 - Kzinti Light Cruiser Tempest

If the Kzinti player rolls a force that has been destroyed by the Kang in a previous scenario the Kang has successfully evaded the Kzinti for that scenario.

The Kang player must destroy the Kzinti ship(s) to escape to the next scenario and get one step closer to Klingon space. If the Klingon has not crushed his opponent within 10 turns at the end of the 10th turn the Kzinti player gets to roll a die on the table to determine what reinforcements to arrive into the foray...  If the die roll indicates a previously destroyed ship no reinforcements arrive. Reinforcements are diced for at every 10th turn... turn 10, turn 20, turn 30, etc...

It is possible that the Klingon player could roll a weak opposing force, destroy that force, and reroll that same result on the table for the following 5 scenarios... making an easy campaign. On the flip side the Kang could take too long to wipe out his opponent, resulting in the arrival of more enemy ships to make for a bad day.

Just played.  Kang kaboomed a Command Cruiser and a Fast Cruiser, but by then shields were almost nothing and the Comet Battlecruiser put him to bed in round 3. 

Fun scenario, though, (even solo).  I'm going to implement some damage control for Kang (every other turn, unless that makes things too easy) and see if I can't make it to round 6. 

The mini-campaign idea is awesome.  Just fast enough to play after the kids go to bed and before I have to.

I would certainly repair all shields after each round and allow all ships to do DC with the Kang getting 10 free turns between scenarios.

I would normally include damage control in this mini campaign, but left it out of the explanation because I wasn't sure Damage Control was covered in Klingon Armada.

I DO know it's covered in Starmada, but not everybody has that.

Great campaign. Now I'll have to buy those needed ships so I can fight those battles!
