This is a place for y'all to request specific ships/genres/scenarios for Grand Fleets and Grand Admiral.

Dan, you caught my attention with the word "genres". Are you considering moving GF/GA out of the "historical" realm it currently inhabits? If that is the case...
Maybe you meant something totally different than I'm reading though.

Re: Ship requests

Maybe "genres" was the wrong word... I meant pre-dreadnought era, RJW, WW2, etc.

Aah, in that case, I would have to put in the obvious vote for WW2. Would you ever consider doing a "what if" setting where the Washington Treaty never occurred? It would seem to me that such a setting would be full of nasty Battleships and powerful Battlecruisers and Cruisers, but  fewer Aircraft carriers (and less capable), and one could build an interesting alternate WW2 at sea around that idea.

Re: Ship requests

I think pre-dreadnought (including RJW) would be interesting -- but WW2 would be far more popular. The pre-dreadnought would be easier to do with the existing rules, so might be a faster turn-around. But if you have rules modifications ready to go for GA, then WW2 is the obvious expansion.

Same goes for GF2, as well.

Re: Ship requests

I vote for pre-dreadnought to WW1.  1863ish forward to WW1.

Not too interested in WW2, the coming of age of aircraft and the aircraft carrier sucked all the interest out of that period for me.

Re: Ship requests

Preferred 'Expansions'

1.) Spanish-American War - the last great hurrah of black powder* on the high seas.
2.) Russo-Japanese War - the birth of 'modern' naval warfare: fleet actions at (relatively) long ranges.
3.) War Between the States/Schleswig War 'Combo Pack' - Two small wars that had a really big impact on naval warfare.

I'd guess that these would be able to be added without too many new rules- but I could be dead wrong.
I would eventually like to see aircraft integrated into both GF and GA, but that can wait.

*OK, so not exactly black powder, but cocoa powder sure isn't smokeless. wink

Hi Daniel,

If we are able to request ships for gameplay... Please post the stats for some WWII British and German ship classes for Grand Admiral. This would be an awesome addition to the game.  big_smile

Ships representative of particular classes could relatively easily provide fighting fleets for both navies:
The Bismarck (BB), Scharnhorst (BB/BC), Admiral Graf Spee (CA), Prinz Eugen (CA) and Koln (CL) classes would cover the German navy.

The Hood and Repulse (BC), the KGV, Nelson, Ramilles and Queen Elizabeth (BB), the Ajax, Sheffield, Jamaica, Arethusa and Dido (CL), and the Exeter and Kent (CA) would cover the primary classes of the Royal Navy during the conflict - just 18 ships in total for both navies.  wink

If there is any chance you could post the ship conversion formulae for Grand Admiral here I would be more than happy to do the ship stat sheets and post them here to the forum.

At the moment, I am trying to create stats for these ships by creating ratings for them in GF and then converting them into GA - then sanity checking them against the factors used in GA Orange.

Thanks for the game by btw - loads of fun  8-)
Kind regards

Re: Ship requests

I'd buy GF2 and a WWII supplement in a heart beat if the WWII supplement had some rules for Air and Subs.  I'm looking more for playability than real world simulation.  I've gone through about 3 different WWII systems now and they are all just not quite there for me.  Either too complicated or just missing something...

Kevin and I were talking about this over the weekend.

Were there historical examples of surface battles in which subs and/or aircraft took part? Obviously, there were plenty of air-vs-ship engagements, and subs were a constant threat, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a ship-to-ship battle where aircraft/subs got involved.

Re: Ship requests

I believe you are correct in regards to subs engaging during a surface battle (as it would have been difficult to distinguish your own ships), but there was certainly lots of escort vs. subs during convoy raiding.

I realize its not really required for historic surface action scenarios - but it sure would be fun in pick-up games.

One way subs could be modeled is just as a "one shot" resource.  You have them off the table, and then at some point you are allowed to bring them on to attack - rules for allowable placement based on enemy anti-sub ships would be key.  If it survives that, then it takes its torp shots and disappears.  Its much easier than tracking hidden movement for the whole game and constantly having to check for sonar etc.

I'm thinking this would work for air assets, as well.

Yes, I think it would - especially for land-based aircraft - with carrier-based possibly having more than one sortie, or perhaps just a better way of controlling "when they show up".

Re: Ship requests

Any further thoughts on this cricket?  I think having 15 minute turns is actually a blessing for implementing aircraft.   How was air handled in GF1 and what are the implications of AA values being WAY higher for WWII ships?

Another thought was that in GF2 torps automatically penetrate.  This is probably okay for WWI, but for WWII its probably going to cause problems given all the torpedo bombers and the fact that many battleships had significant torpedo belts.

I'm with MadSeason on this one.

Re: Ship requests

Hi Dan,

Any news on a WWII Atlantic War supplement for Grand Admiral?

Also, how about releasing some German and Royal Navy ship stats for WWII, or at least some gun and penetration tables so that we can do the rest?  8-) In particular, since I am asking, how about stats for the Bismarck, Scharnhorst, Admiral Graf Spee and Prinz Eugen (please, pretty please)?????

Thanks for an awesome game system,
