Topic: Official IS Naval powers (Aether)?

Curious about which powers are officially in the aether.  Am making my own figs and was considering setting them up as the Spaniards.  Having a history with the British and the French at least, it just seems to make sense that Spain would endeavor to make at least a showing of the flag.
:?

The other question I had in mind was what the fins are...sails, solar collectors, ???.  Then again I may have missed something reading the rules (nice btw).

(added to tie into thread title)
Official Fleets mentioned from Iron Stars rulebook and Merchant War:

America
United Kingdom
Russia
China
Germany
France
Austria-Hungary
South Africa
Italy
Japan

Well, the Spanish are not "officially" in the ether, as they haven't yet appeared in the books -- but that doesn't mean they can't be there....

Frankly, we just haven't thought too hard about them -- got quite a lot of other things going on. smile

I think some player-designed factions might not be a bad idea... *hint, hint*

The "fins" and props are used for propulsion/steering. We are working on a suitable techo-babble explanation of how ships work for the next supplement.

(But anything we come up with will just be after-the-fact explanations for a choice that was made because they looked cool. smile )

Coolness.  8)  That helps a lot.  The Spanish "Flota del Aether" is under construction.

Re: Official IS Naval powers (Aether)?

Well...I answered my own question while researching Spain's role in the world circa 1898-1912.  Pretty much, they were a declining world power and the Spanish-American War of 1898 all but finished them off.  With an agricultural economy and a politically bankrupt government, they didn't truely industrialize or recover until well after WWI, despite a bit of a bright spot from approximately 1906-1908.  Given that and that IS is on a bit more fictional tangent, the following is my proposal for the introduction of Spain into the aether.  For anyone from Spain reading this, please forgive the gross editing and license taken with your history, no slur is intended.

The 1898 war with the United States ended with the independence of Cuba and the loss of the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico to the US for $20 million.  This left Spain with a single significant holding, Morocco and a country rapidly vanishing from the world stage politically, economically, and militarily.

Fortunately, the Queen Regent appointed Francisco Silvela to the post of Prime Minister in March of 1899.  Silvela began his attempts at reform rapidly, one of his appointees creating the "Villaverde Reforms" resulting in the economic stabilization in Spain and beginning a small recovery.

Political corruption and obstructionists result in a rapid change of governments.  This slows and ultimately halts reforms and recovery.  Silvela resigns for the second time in 1903 disgusted with the inability to effect reforms.

1902- Alfonso XIII comes to the throne on his 16th birthday.  Unfortunately, he is well meaning but not well educated.  Intent on establishing himself as an "army king", his interests concentrate on Spain's security, unity, and prestige rather than the social, economic, cultural, and religious problems destroying the foundations of his country.
Over the next several years, Spain sees the rise and fall of many governments with durations of mere months.

Spain's army becomes increasingly disgruntled due to low pay and public criticisms in the aftermath of the 1898 war.  Rampant militarism throughout Europe leaves the Spanish Army with little prestige and the economic drought leaves it with little funding.  Spain is rapidly left behind on the world stage.

1904- An arrangement brokered with France by King Alfonso XIII trades a majority of Spain's last holding, Morocco, for resources and technologies necessary to construct a modest squadron of aetheric vessels.  It is the hope of the crown that the development of these vessels will open the door to new holdings and wealth, revitalizing the country.

The political turmoil raging prevents any immediate development of aetheric vessels.  Social unrest and religious tensions are rising amidst the floundering economy and political instability.  Spain finds itself unable to police even the last of its holdings in Morocco.

1906- An assassination attempt on the life of King Alfonso XIII by social radicals galvanizes the crown to action.  The Moret government fails in the aftermath of the failed assassination.

1907- Antonio Maura comes to power as the Prime Minister and immediately institutes sweeping reforms and strengthening of Spain's national defenses.  Among the many projects instuted under his government was the long postponed development of the Flota del Aether.
This move along with marginally increased pay, improves the morale and esprit de corps of the Spanish Armed Forces.

1908- Spain launches the first vessel of the Flota del Aether, the frigate "Tiburon".  A new age of exploration and hope for Spain has began.

Well, I like it so far... but I'm not up on my Spanish history. How much of this is "real" and how much fiction?

Re: Official IS Naval powers (Aether)?

Most of it is actual history and the names and dates are correct, just a bit generalized eventwise.  The only portions that are fictional is that Spain traded for the resources and technologies from France.  In reality, they pretty much gave Morocco away since they were unable to govern it.  The other bit would be their attempt to revive their country's position as a world player through the exploration of the aether.  Once earth gets to Mars, I can see a revival of the Conquistador possible.

The actual events of the time period for Spain were pretty dismal in fact. The Maura government only lasted for 2 years, thereabouts...and it was the most stable and long lasting of the governments from 1898 to 1914 or so.  Spain was in such poor shape politically (a massive liberalization of government occurred over this time) and militarily that when WWI came on...they absolutely HAD to be neutral.

It was about 3 hours of reading just to deal with all the events of the period and goings on.  The only thing Spain led the world on at the time was in the number of religious orders within the country.  They had so many that there was an actual ban on creating any new ones sometime around 1908-1910 I think it was.  They never even began to industrialize until after WWI, which is why I have France supplying resources.

As for pics of their ships...I'm sketching them out and playing with concepts.  I'll scan in what the rough sketches and try to post them soon. smile

You might want to remember that Spain would likely have come out of the Martian Invasion unscathed... this would put them in a position to make some significant colonial gains during the first years of the century, before the major players recovered.

Regarding the Conquistador revival, that's more likely on the Moon than on Mars.

Re: Official IS Naval powers (Aether)?

Colonialism on the moon, eh?  Not being as up on Victorian concepts of the moon and its environs...Do tell...

If the major powers did get pretty wrecked during the marian invasion, then Spain as a primary agricultural economy would be poised to make significant profits in export of foodstuffs and such to the war torn nations.  With the rise in exports, the economy would likely improve helping to shore up the stability of the Maura government, despite the political enemies his non-pandering style created.  With the government stablized, Spain would be ready to embark once again on the journeys of exploration and discovery that helped create her greatness.  The improved economy would also provide the needed funding for the construction of their Flota del Aether.  *ponders*

I'd forgotten about that aspect of the time/story line....d'OH!

Re: Official IS Naval powers (Aether)?

Here's the webpage where I've posted the rough concept sketches for the Flota del Aether fleet.  Enjoy...and yes, most of the ships have a low profile, bridge forward style design to give the primary batteries the greatest arcs of fire.   big_smile

Nice cylinder with turrets top and bottom motif!

Re: Official IS Naval powers (Aether)?

big_smile Well, started putting together the "Tiburon" frigate over the weekend.  Have to do some finish work and place the sails, cannon barrels, and light guns before I paint it up yet.   I'll try to add a pic of work so far tonite onto the Flota del Aether site.

Semi-decent pic is posted at the same link as sketches. Enjoy!

Re: Official IS Naval powers (Aether)?

Well, I finally got the Tiburon completed and painted.  Pictures can be found at the link.

I've added pics of some of my other projects as well.  Nothing fancy since I've only been doing scratchbuilds for less than a year, but I'm learning. smile

Enjoy!

September 30, 1908: Spain launches the "Tiburon" (Tiburone), a frigate class vessel as the first of it's Flota del Aether.  Able to make a fast torpedo run against other vessels and laying mines to discourage pursuit.  Though lightly gunned the Tiburon is well outfitted to act as a screening vessel against FAC.
