Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

Agreed. I would rather wait an extra month then get a sub-par product that needs a lot of errata to be usable.

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

Hello everyone, next month Feb 16 to 19 is MegaCon, a large SciFi & Gaming convention in Orlando, Florida.  I was planning to go and hoped to run several games of the New Version of Starmada.  Will the new game be ready soon enough before then?  I want to learn the rules, and make ships for games I will run at the convention.   It would be great to show everyone the new Starmada at MegaCon in Orlando next month.  8-)

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

There will be a french convention during 7-8 feb, and I also intend to do the same.

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

Got a question...

Are we going to have more hull available in this new edition?

I would love to make huge-monstrous-leviathan-type ships.

What comes to mind are things like the Doomsday Machine, Borg cube, Deathstar, etc...

I'd also like to be able to have battles between Star Trek & Battlestar Galactica & Star Wars & Honor Harrington & Starfire & etc...

I've always have felt limited by the lack of the upper hull boxes. This made ships of different sci-fi universes restrictive to the scale of their said universe.

Umm...  the Shipyard supports up to 30ish for AE, and I'm pretty sure you could hack it to higher if you really wanted to.  Likewise, the rules of AE themselves don't impose a max hull size; it's just that most tools for aiding shipbuilding do.  You could easily build ships of arbitrary size for AE, as long as you did it by hand...

Personnaly, I do not have that problem as I play with friends that are usually noobies, playing with my minis, and I keep the rules at a minimum. We use existing universes, especially SFU (even if I reworked the ship display sheets). Strikers IMHO should be reserved to bombers or fighter-bombers, ie those fighters with part or all of their weapons expendables. For example, they have missiles and an autocannon. The first time they shoot with missiles, as strikers, then revert to fighters and shoot with the cannon.
I feel it's sad to ban things just because you exploited something to the max, but I understand, that's life. smile

Marc

Yeah...  I hate banning things too, but the folks at my college are dirty exploiters (self included)...  And that would be a pretty dood idea, really - all strikers have to be a second mode of a dual-mode fighter squadron.  I don't think we're going to play AE again before the new edition comes out, though, so probably moot, but I'll have to remember it in case we do.

Alll at once? big_smile

You could always decide that a hull 24 (for example) is the baddest guy, and work on reverse smaller ships, ending maybe with heavy cruiser with hull 4.

Well, isn't that what Starmada is for? smile

Yep.  big_smile

This pretty much mean I'd have to rework the ships with each scenario that involves a different Sci-fi universe being the bigger bad guy. Unless I make all the ships of each universe at the same time.

What I would like to be able to do is to grab a Heavy Cruiser from (maybe) Kilngon Armada and a properly scaled Star Wars Star Destroyer and then have at it!!!

Properly scaled, the Star Destroyer would swat the Klingon ship in the first turn or ignore it. smile
If you must have bigger ships do what some did with Full Thrust (Star-Ranger's Star Wars ships were made in several sections).
Same as if making a large station like B5, which might have a command section, fighter section, living section and power section.

What he said...

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

Earlier it was asked about making larger hull sizes for Starmada(AE) ships.  My nephew has added onto the ship builder program to make ships up to 60 hull.  The large hull/engines/shieds blocks are on the top as usual, etc.  It does make for some powerful ships, but they are very  S L O W  as well as powerful  given their slow speed and the ease of predicting hwere they will be next turn, it is easy to swarm them with many small ships.  Sort of like many PT Boats attacking the Yamato or Musashi in WW2. 8-)

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

Currently, carriers carry fighters. But we have universes (Bab5 and Star Trek, for example), where tenders or motherships carry small ship much bigger than fighters. So, will there be provision to determine the carrier size of a small ship?

Excellent!  I am wanting to start another B5 mini-campaign, and convert more of the not-so-used races.

Which time zone is Dan in?

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

In a future far far away, of course.

I think he has his own pocket dimension where he can dictate the time and day that he wants it to be. Or perhaps his car can approach light speed and because of the time-dilation he thinks it is still sometime in December  wink

PS Hey Dan, maybe next time don't be specific about exactly which day, month or year something shall appear, it makes the natives restless!  smile

Dan did not say which year it was.

Not actually true:

But that's hardly the point...  It seems that we fans are ravenous enough for a Blizzard Release Schedule ("We'll release SC2 when it's ready") to work here tongue

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

Patience everyone.
I am confident that Dan is doing the best he can.  I would have the Starmada Nova Edition done well, even if a little late. 8-)

Concur but it would be nice to have an estimate of the expected wait for those of us planning projects and contemplating using the new rules.

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

I could bore you all with the various and sundry reasons for the delays... but that won't get the book into your hands any more quickly. Suffice to say that life can get complicated... smile

I'm reluctant to give any more estimates for fear of starting a riot -- I will say the rules are finished. The difficulty now is in giving it the final polish and making decisions on what should or should not be included.
