I definitely hope there is an option for simultaneous movement...

Even if there isn't an "official" rule for it I rather doubt Dan will revoke your Starmada privileges or demand return of the rules if you institute your own simultaneous movement system for your games  wink  I hope there is an official rule too, as alternating movement will make Vassal games by email tedious if not outright impossibly slow, and I don't want to risk losing my Starmada rights (just in case) using house rules.
Can't wait to get the rest of the rules!
Cheers,
Erik

Not only is there an option, there's an explicit reference to it right there in the main rules. smile

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

One of the things I was hopping to do with starmada is to lower the number of ships because when playing the game you easly  out number any of the stories and you ability to keep track of what going on so fewer ships would be one of the goals.

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

TR is the arc use in starfire I like that.

Oh yeah, I know that, but I'd much rather have it in print rather than house rules...

@cricket: didn't have much chance to read the rules where I was, will have more chance to do it now...:)

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

Will there be support for custom arcs?  (ie. those not covered by the 24 ones listed, say A, B, E, F)

That's a thing I didn't understand. If I follow the rules, when I have to move one ship, the opponent will decide which one.
It seems bizarre and not enticing you to have smaller fleets of big ships.
I would understand such a a rule as long as the opponent may choose one of your ships if you have to move more than one ship.
Did I miss something?

I do not think that I have seen this used for movement before, wonder how many people will use it.

Here is a fun alternative. have a chit for each ship and draw for which ship moves next. Players alternate drawing a chit from the pot. For each command level (on highest level ship) if you draw a ship that you prefer to move later in the turn you can put the chit back in the pot instead. Of course it may be picked next - that is the luck of the draw. smile

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

When I first heard of the new version coming out I was a little apprehensive.

I had just recently gotten into Starmada and a new version coming out already?

But looking over these rules in the pre-release-PDF... all I can say is, "Shiney!"

Are we going to be provided with information to convert older version ships to the newer version? My main thoughts are running toward the conversions of Klingon, Romulan, Alien, etc, Armadas.

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

Yer movement is weird in fact the wording is very poor and inconsistent. In the first paragraph on movement it says

During the Movement Phase  beginning with the active player, players alternate selecting one of their own ships to conduct its movement [p7].

then we get

A-A-R-A-A-R-A-A-R-A
The opposing player always chooses one of the ships to be moved: e.g. if the active player is moving three ships at a time that player chooses two and the opponent chooses the third

Which contradicts the first paragraph.

I assume in the example the active player is moving 2 ships at a time. A-A then the reactive player moves 1. But if the opponent always chooses one of the ships then what happens when you are moving only one does your opponent always get to choose? Or does 'at a time' mean 'a turn' ?

I read it and then slept on it, the wording is very unclear and I can see several interpretations. The way I understand it (and I am probably wrong) using the example in the rules ans assuming I am the active player and have 7 ships and Jim my opponent (other opponents are available)  has 3 ships.

I move one of my ships. Jim chooses another of my ships to move I move it. I then choose one of his which he moves, he then chooses the next ship (it must be one of mine) and so on.

In this interpretation the order of fleet movement is determined by the numbers present but who chooses the actual ship alternates. Over the course of a battle this could simulate simultaneous movement by its unpredictability.

Another way of reading it is that:-
I move my first ship and Jim chooses my second, Jim then moves one of his ships, I move my third ship and Jim chooses my fourth ship.

This mitigates, some what, against large fleets of small ships ganging up on smaller ships.

A third way is, Jim chooses one of my ships I move it, I choose one of my ships and move it, I then choose one of his ships and he moves it, he chooses one of my ships I move it and so on.

This is actually what the second paragraph says and I think its not what was intended but I don't know.

I think the first option is fairer but weirder (in a nice way of course).

Dan what on earth, or even in space, did you actually mean?

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

I have just had another thought. Its not that I disagree but all this 'randomizing' of the movement order both in the rules and the forum sort of makes who has initiative pretty pointless.

This is the intent. If I am moving two or more ships at a time, my opponent chooses one of those ships during each of my movement opportunities. I have altered the wording to read, "If a player is moving more than one ship at a time, the opposing player chooses one of the ships to be moved."

Yes, a process will be included to "upconvert" existing Admiralty designs.

How    should we proceed?
Should the player having to move many ships asks first his opponent which ship, at what time, etc, or what?

The ships to be activated are chosen, then they are moved/fired in whatever order is desired by the acting player.

would the shields in the ADB universe act more like Armor?  Thanks again for posting the preview!

Re: New edition of Starmada coming in January!

From what I saw of draft rules earlier, the Starmada: AE write-your-moves-down-and-move-simultaneously system will be an option.
