Topic: Combining Multiple arcs

G'day,

I'm playing around with the Nova edition and converting ships from Sword of the Stars and end up with [FX4][PX7][SX7][TT5][PH5][SH5]

and a track that looks like this: 11    8    6    4    3    2    1    1    1    0    0    0

a target just off axis to the front will be attacked by the FX4, PX7, TT5, SX7 and PH5.

PX7+SX7=Q5
Q5+TT5+PH5=W2 (based off the splitting fire rule).
W2+FX4=E1 (based off splitting fire rule).

Combined: 8 dice
Separate: 9 dice (though that goes to zero at any sort of range)

Is there a more elegant way to do this?

Thanks.

Re: Combining Multiple arcs

When you play with ships that have a lot of overlapping fire arcs...
... you kind of get what you get. smile

In our games we've been doing it the "long" way, which is to simply compare the mods of each arc to the die track, and calculate the dice one arc at a time.
In my ship designs I try to keep the firing arcs as basic as possible, and with the mods as small as possible.
It makes calculating the weapon dice *much* quicker.

I realize in a "conversion" type situation you may not have that luxury.

I'm afraid I don't really understand the question... ?

Also, what are the "PX" and "SX" arcs?

My fault I think. I left the combinations in for ABC,ABD,CEF and DEF. Those would be ABC and ABD.

The first question is: is there are more elegant way to do combine fire than the multi-stage way that I listed (I'm thinking not, short of adding another line to the ship chart showing the number of weapon emplacements).

as for the PX and SX arcs, those came from the OldNGrey's spreadsheet and are expanded FP and FS arcs.

Re: Combining Multiple arcs

I included the explaining graphic with the spreadsheet, incase anyone has not seen it.

Re: Combining Multiple arcs

Thank you for including that graphic, after the very intuitive ABCDEF arcs, this is a bit of a transition.

There really isn't. Unless all of the banks have the same arc modifier, you have to do it in "stages".

If all of the banks DO have the same arc modifier, you can combine three of them for a +3 bonus or four of them for a +4 bonus.

Re: Combining Multiple arcs

Can we get that included where everyone can find it, as an addendum or something...based on what was just indicated...that if you have several banks with the same arc modifier, when combined in attacking a single target, you get a positive modifier equal to the number of banks involved...ie, if having 2 banks combined - you get a +2 modifier( as mentioned in rules); for 3 or 4 similiar banks- you get +3 or +4 modifier (not indicated in the rule book).

took me several searches and a lot of reading to find it...

Thanks.

I think there is a more elegant/simpler way.If you listed each mount with a different arc as a separate battery, you could just check which mounts can fire in the direction of the target and add up the dice.  It would be much simpler.
My favorite personal ships are designed as WW 2 BBs in space; similar to the converted Yamato in Star Blazers.  The USS Arizona design has four turrets/mounts for its r=18, Acr,Dx3 Plasma guns.  These arcs  are FX, FX, AX, AX.  Instead of having them on one line as a single battery, these main guns are each listed separately.  An example of these Four-turreted DNs is on the Bourbaki Basin (Admiralty).
Try this, it is much easier.
