Topic: Unarmed Ships

Freighters, Space Liners in fact any ship which does not have anything adding to the ORAT cost 0 points.

Suggest adding a shuttle or any piece of equipment that adds an ORAT figure.
Alternative would be give an unarmed ship 1 point of ORAT to give a CRAT.

I tend to add shuttlecraft quite often, so freighters will always have some CRat.

Why giving them a CRAT?
Usually, freighters are used in scenarios, where they are given a VP value. No need of a CRAT this way.

Just thinking ahead, campaign fleets having auxiliaries and everything has to be paid for eventually.
VPs seem to mean very little if you are suddenly without supplies and have to return to a base. Or get stuck at a base until another supply ship can be provided.
There was a little argument about their being free a while back.
Yeah I know, how many are going to be unarmed? In a certain universe even little freighters have guns! smile
What about medical ships?
It is just my take on things.

Using a potential CRAT to rate fraighters seems wrong because their value is un-military. You are right about the campaign effect, but their usefullness can't be termed in fighting value (I wonder if what I said just makes sense... :? )
That's why, if ever I play such a 'catch the lowly freighters' scenario (I have some minis for them), I won't use their CRAT to determine victory.

The combat rating has a very specific purpose -- to quantify a ship's effectiveness in the limited confines of a tabletop battle. Thus, I have never been terribly comfortable using it as a "campaign" or "build" cost -- at least, not on its own.

Campaign specific construction costs should probably be based on their Auxiliary services total modified by whatever armament they mount. After all, those services are why you want them in your fleet anyway and it would seem logical that a "more capable" ship, whatever its purpose should "cost" more to build.

I have built some armed freighters.  They and their escort of DNs & DDs approach a system with the intent of landing and planting a Super-duper WALMART on the planet. 
"...we don't care if planet-wide MainStreet businesses suffer..." :shock:
