Topic: Ship size class suggestions

The ship examples in the rule book do not display what each of their hull sizes are.  is there a general suggestion of how big a DD or a CA or whatever should be?

Re: Ship size class suggestions

My biggest DNs have 46 Hull and 46 armor and their CRAT is 551.  My CL is 22 Hull & 22 Armor, Crat=380.  The DD has 16 Hull and 13 Armor, CRAT=200.  I also have a Frigate with 13 Hull & 10 Armor, CRAT=150.  Last, but ot least I have a gunboat with four hull and one armor & a CRAT=50.  My friends & I play twice a week here in Jacksonville.
I have friends who have designed much larger ships...

Re: Ship size class suggestions

I base my ship designations based on the Combat Rating of the ship.  Here are my classification:
Class                        Combat Rating (CR)
Boat (BT)                    1-50
Cutter (CU)            40-80
Corvette (CT)            80-150
Destroyer (DD)            150-225
Frigate (FF)            200-275
Light Cruiser (CL)        250-350
Heavy Cruiser (CA)        300-500
Battlecruiser (BC)        500-700
Heavy Battlecruiser (BCH)    650-750
Battleship (BB)            700-1000
Monitor (MT)            1000+

Escort Carrier (CVE)        80-225
Light Carrier (CVL)        200-350
Carrier (CV)            350-500
Heavy Carrier (CVH)        500+

Re: Ship size class suggestions

In the end, this is merely you who decide what size is which ship.
It could be a hull size, CR, or whatever. Personnaly I prefer hull, but sometimes, if designing ships using SSDs from another game, you can end with destroyers having the same size as cruisers. You can make adjustments or not. That's not really a problem.

Re: Ship size class suggestions

I usually go with whatever universe I'm converting from considers standard.  This can get really confusing however for those with more fixed ideas of size and nomenclature.  Babylon 5 is one of the best examples, with Omega destroyers being bigger then both Nova Dreadnoughts and Hyperion Heavy Cruisers.

I agree that a points based system allows more verbal comparison with others designs.  Thus my Primus Battlecruiser (From B5 at 15 hull and 510 points) can be compared to my Ork Terror Class Kroozer (From BFG at 44 hull points and 515 points) and both would be rated a Battlecruiser by sgibson's system.  I'm not sure that the name is really needed though.  I could just say that my ~500 point ship is there.

Re: Ship size class suggestions

Duskland is right, you can just use the CR of the ship.  Also, he also uses fleet scale minis and I am using bigger miniature ships.  I have no problem wrapping my mind around such tiny ships being so powerful or such large ships being so weak because his ships are all aliens (Centauri, Narn, Tyranids, Orks), so in my suspension of disbelief, I can rationalize the difference by thinking that each fleet is built by a race or empire with different technology.  When I fight him, I do ask the combat rating of each, and I mentally tag them so I know which is the bigger/lesser threat to me.

I got in a bind in my first game against his Tyranids, when I focused my fire/missile volleys on the ship that had the hull boxes of a giant battleship, but ended up having the weakest offensive firepower in his fleet (it's CR was about a light cruiser in my 'system.')  So now I ask him at the start.  But it is fun treating each battle as a meeting engagement with some exotic (but strangely, always hostile) alien race.  Then after each battle, the Terran Federation scrambles to modify its ships in that sector to face the new foe (forget the point defense batteries!  We need more marines!!!!)
