Topic: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

Has anyone developed faceted shields for Starmada Nova SFU or will it be in a future release?

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

Officially, faceted shields are translated as armor combined with directionnal defenses FF in Nova.
One point of facet being now one point of armor.

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

Starmada Nova SFU (Star Fleet Universe) ships do not have armor. (Klingon Armada p.36)

Sorry if I was unclear on what setting I was talking about.

(Maybe SFU could have a separate sub-forum?)

I may not understand faceted shields correctly.  Do they function like shields 1,2,3,4,5,6 in Star Fleet Battles or Federation Commander?  Would directional shields be a more accurate term for what I am thinking about?

Could someone post the faceted shield rules?  I already spent $60.00, well $59.10, for Starmada Nova and the SFU books and do not have Starmada AE.

It seems odd that a ship will loose all shields before suffering hull or internal damage.

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

While I would appreciate people asking before posting content directly from the rulebooks regardless, it becomes more problematic when doing so from the SFU books, since strictly speaking they are ADB's IP, and not MJ12's.

The closest we have gotten to faceted shielding in the SFU Nova books is Directional Shielding (Distant Armada, p.11).

Sorry.

ADB is very aggressive concerning IP threats.

I will double the shield sections from 3 to 6 to account for the 6 sides and see how the stock numbers work in play.  (3 sections of 5 will become 6 sections of 5)  The values may need to be adjusted up or down a little.

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

Couldn't players just do what players did in S:AE?
 Designate one shield facing as the strongest one.  It will always have a shield level one stronger, the two sjield facings beside it would be as written on the ship's SSD, and the other three would be one level weaker.  If done this way, would there be no change to a ship's cost, the owner would need to keep track.
What does everyone else think?

That looks good.

I purchased Romulan Armada AE from e23 and it is beginning to look like I should have gone for AE instead of Nova

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

Or use Nova like this and mark off a line instead of the normal number of single shield boxes as per the core rules. big_smile

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

Intriguing. But wouldn't that still result in the same level of shielding all around.  My need is to have shields fail independently.  It looks like importing the faceted rules from AE is my best shot.

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

No, that was perhaps a bad example as the class has minimal shielding (all facets except aft have shield value 6). Each facet can have its' own level of shielding (Nova shield value). The way I play it is that all facets either lose or repair levels at the same time.

Oh... That sounds much better.  I will run that through some play-testing to see what my group thinks.

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

Could you give us a better example of what you propose and how it would work?  Hopefully one with the front shield stronger.

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

Sure, I hope that this explains the way I use faceted shields in Nova.

Thanks Paul, I like the way the SSD looks.  Brilliant!   8-)
We are playing Starmada here in S.Fla. on Monday.  It will be an option if anyone wants to use it.
Cheers

Re: Faceted Shields for Starmada Nova SFU

After playing with multiple methods of Directional/Faceted shielding we decided to use the method below.

Six shield faces as in Star Fleet Battles and Federation Commander using the existing 3 divisions as a base.

ex 1. Fed CA has 3 blocks of 6.  We expand that to 6 blocks of 6.

Shield 1 = 6 Points, Shield 2 = 6 Points, Shield 3 = 6 Points, Shield 4 = 6 Points, Shield 5 = 6 Points, Shield 6 = 6 Points

ex 2. Fed DNF has 3 blocks of 8.  We expand that to 6 blocks of 8.

Shield 1 = 8 Points, Shield 2 = 8 Points, Shield 3 = 8 Points, Shield 4 = 8 Points, Shield 5 = 8 Points, Shield 6 = 8 Points

Hull points remain the same and are reduced after the facing shield is depleted.  After a few more tests we may discover that ships are destroyed too soon and HPs may need to be increased.

This does mess with the PV numbers but since every ship/base in the game has these expanded shields it evens out.  (Well more or less.)  It is also an easy method of allowing extra defense tactics without a huge increase in complexity.
