I like everything about the sheet right now -- except the fact that I need to have fighter flights recognize "large" and "small" flights as taking up more or less room in the hangar-bays...

Given the amount of work in the VBAM side on the existing tool, and how far that one has already been disseminated, I would hate to rush to any decision... although anyone can use any option they want... in short "replace" may be too strong a word.   :wink:

Uploaded the v1.0 of the Shipyards tool. I corrected the calculations for expendable weapons, stopped the sheet from auto-adding basic flights to fill in for flights not used by other types of fighter (due to a problem in calculating hangar-bay space for small and large flights), and made some minor cosmetic changes.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the final product.

Nah.

It's a great tool, but as has been noted, there are lots of SXCA-mods floating around that are still useful. So, I would hesitate to "replace" it anytime soon.

Besides, the beauty of your project is the fleet aspects... no reason to strip that away.

Hi,

Just for the hell of it, I made the exact same ship in the shipyard sheet as well as in the SXCA sheet. There are differences that should be ironed out so that both output the same points values.

Here is the overview for a hull 18 ship:
SXCA: ORat: 1838.3, DRat: 548.8, CR: 1004, SU left: 11
Shipyard v1.0: ORat: 1671.3. DRat: 501.0, CR: 915, SU Left: 8

I've included the ship design files for further study.

Yes, you are correct -- my shipyard sheet was calculating this incorrectly. I found the prooblem (it was in the template sheet) where it was not putting in the oRAT and dRAT modifiers for multiple pieces of the same equipment (on the same line). This has been addressed and corrected.

I have tried several ways of generating a text-based output in excel that does not look unreadable to me... and have failed.

Anyone else want to try to create a text-output for the Shipyard design pages that we can incorporate as the "official" version of it for Shipyards?

I did a version (SXCAfighters.xlt) that is posted to the yahoo groups file page (currently version 2.5g).  It outputs the SXCA file to a text string that can be cut and pasted where ever.

The weekend I tried shipyard and the sxca.xls. And it didn't work proper.
This probely is because I use Open Office. Can someone have a look at that?

I use Open Office 2.0

The "sheet Protect" can stop the drop down menu working properly, so can not allowing the macros when opening the sheet.

Try going to "Tools/Protect Document/Sheet" on the first (Nation) sheet. if there is a tick against "sheet" select it to remove the protection.

I had to do this when I first tried using this spreadsheet.

This is a VERY cool spreadsheet....really helps develop 'flavor' for a race.

I notice a few possible errors (or they might just be UTS errors, but I figured I'd post 'em).

1) Stutterdrives seems to screw up the Used and Left fields of the SU section (both are #NA when a SD is added)

2) Shockwave does the same to O and CR in the CR section.

3) I dont *think* the Large/Small flights of Fighter are taking up different space in the Bays. When I used Small Flights, I didnt see a way to get the 3 for 2 Flights per Bay.

Sorry WarpFlame, I thought that you were having trouble getting the dropdown choices in the cells.

See what you mean now. Comes up Error:value not available.

I wonder if the calculations are done in lines 50-132, which are not "seeable". Likewise Cols.A-C in the Tables sheet. It would seem that the missing values are looked for there.

This is one for the experts to sort out.

I'm no expert but I found this solution.
On the Tables sheet, Unprotect the sheet in Tools/Protect Document/Sheet as you would on the Nations sheet.

Put B1 in Name Box and go to Format/Column/Width. Tick Default Value.
You should now be able to see Column B

Do the same for Column C

In the To Hit array, In Column B delete the + signs.
The To Hit Column on the Nations sheet just had the number, no +.
This should work now.

I also expected the problem lies within the + marking. But I have aplied what you have writen. But in my case it didn't work.  :cry:

I just downloaded the Shipyard v1.1 and I have a question and something that might be a possible future enhancement.

The question is, how do you make a weapon Expendable in the shipyard?

The way I understand the shipyard to be used is that you can put a collection of ships (representing a race or whatever) in the same workbook.  One enhancement might be to allow different TLs on individual items, such as weapons.  This would allow you to keep using the same workbook to represent a race as they progress in TL (i.e. Cold Navy ships), and even have upgraded ships that may have one weapon system at TL 1 while the rest are still at TL0, representing new weapon systems that have been developed and installed.

So, I've been watching the stuggles of getting Shipyard to behave with Open Office, and these are some of the workarounds I've come across;

1) I've never seen the pulldowns work, even if I unprotect the sheet. I'm not convinced that unprotecting the sheet should make them work anyway. When I do see the pulldowns (ctrl-d in a cell), the options available don't seem to be appropriate to the box. In other words, the options seem to be randomly generated from objects available on that sheet. I'm betting that Open Office implements the pulldown lists differently than Excel.

2) including a "+" in some fields (like To Hit), can be accomplished by typing a "'" (that's an apostophe character, not an foot mark).  After you've typed that into the field, you can type the rest of the string and the '+' sign won't be parsed out, i.e., type '3+ if you want 3+ to appear in the field.

3) Getting weapons to show up on the Templates page was a trick. David is generating a new string at B52 that he wants to see in the weapons field. If you want it to properly fill out the Weapons box, you have to type this new string in. That string is made up of (letter)_Weapon_  Those underscores represent spaces. If you're using the KEB option, you need to add K, E, or B to the end of that.

Obviously, the cool thing to do would be to find out why the pulldowns don't function. I'm going to paw through the OpenOffice docs to see if I can figure something out, but I'm not promising anything, since real-life keeps impinging in the form of adorable twin babies.

I have managed to get most of it sorted for Open Office 2, just waiting for a reply from KDLadage, about a couple of entries on the tables sheet which do not agree with the template sheet for Shockwave and Stutterdrive.
WarpFlame has tested it. OK so far (just a few special equipment to sort out).

OK, I think that I have figured the solution with the Shockwave and Stutterdrive.
This should work with Excel as well as OpenOffice.
On the Template sheet:-
1) Merge cells Y44 with Z44, AA44 with AB44, Y54 with Z54 and AA54 with AB54.
2) Enter in Cell Y44    "ESU"
    Enter in Cell AA44   "=+$AR$6"
    Enter in Cell Y54       "HS(E+1)"
    Enter in Cell AA54    "=+$AM$5*($AM$6+1)*$AM$7"
(without the ")
3) Using Find & Replace,
    Find all  $Y$39:$AB$43   Replace with   $Y$39:$AB$44
    Find all  $Y$46:$AB$53   Replace with   $Y$46:$AB$54

That should do it. lol
