Topic: Font Icon Ideas?

I think that the OnGsheet1 font has just about every icon I could use on my data cards but are there any things that I have missed and just can not see them?

I last added Fast Attack Craft and when the font is next posted it will have Bomb Rack.

Another recent thread and the Aracnonoi pdf from a while back had me thinking on system disabling weapons again.
I have been thinking of using the font for a Damage Grid 6 x 6, actually as an alternative to the system in AE but also good for Nova.
You know the type, for each disabled special item hit roll 2 die and consult chart for what takes the hit, Battery, Crew or System. One icon on the grid for each battery originally but in Nova four for shields, weapons and engines and one for each special item like hyperdrive. Large ships could have a grid 6 x 10 if 6 x 6 is not big enough for everything. Throw an empty grid square = Tough luck you just knocked out the drinks dispenser. smile
Found that I could use a few more icons after all. These will be added to the next update.

Still no ideas coming in . Instead, how about ideas to merge Starmada and other games like Quantum Legions?

The number of people giving ideas is truly overwhelming, 0.
Is there anybody left that have not deserted to other games?
Starmada AE is not dead, just an alternative.
Oh well, I will just carry on on my own. Never know these may come in handy for someone.

Sorry that nobody has chimed in to give you any ideas, myself included! Sorrier to say that I really don't have any ideas to give you. I can appreciate what you're doing with the font icons, but personally, just for me, I find them a little distracting or "cluttery" when there are a bunch on the ship sheet. I think a lot of these icons would actually be great as counters for other things.

As to leaving for other games, I'm still addicted to Starmada. Just enough complexity of play options to have fun and avoid a trigonometry-level popsicle headache. I like the gameplay of Nova now that I have gotten enough games under my belt, but I must admit, I do miss some of the design flexibility of earlier editions.

If it makes you feel better I'm actually working on a good sized ship project related to my Terran Republic setting. I've been toying with a bit of a steampunk setting (just a whole lotta notes at this point), and I believe you had something in the works from the Iron Stars setting that I am interested in.

Have no fear, there are a few of us around that probably aren't going anywhere, even if we do get awfully quiet out there.
Keep doing stuff and there are at least two or three of us here in the interwebs that will see it and appreciate it even if the rest are gone!  wink
Besides, it's summer, and some of them could be playing outside. They'll be back when the weather turns!  smile

I had noticed that there are a few people left (seems like very few).
I started the icons because I wanted to print my own ships and even bought the font mentioned in the book but that did not have very much of use to me. Besides I wanted a font geared towards Starmada (and maybe a few other games). Only answer was buy some software and start from scratch.
I know what you mean about their being distracting and admit I do not use them all of the time.
As you can see from the last lots I have been thinking on what transport ships might carry, which is where I was going with Fuel, Munitions and Passengers. Who knows down the line they might come in handy in campaigns or if the Starmada & Wardogs book ever gets released.
I guess printed at a larger point size some could be used as damage chits and the generic ones on most any data cards.
I am still crawling along with the Iron Stars ships which has at least given me a chance to see how the faceted shields work with Nova. Since it only needs you to see which shield makes the save throw it is no harder than using Nova shields as is.
I have posted in the hope that it will get others thinking and posting their ideas but sometimes it is like "flogging a dead horse"!

I'm still here--just posted another new setting...:)

But I have no ideas for new font icons, and I post my ships in Drake notation anyway (the better to paste into Notepad and then into the document)

I know one thing for sure--I wouldn't be able to do anything near to what you're doing--if you've noticed, my drawing skills are not top-notch...:(

The Drake notation is handy for keeping files small but I still find myself keeping data cards in .png format. I was going to use the Drake Notation in vassal but I am getting used to filling in the ship class stats when adding a new ship (just have to remember to save the module between entering ships so that the stats are kept).
I am just happy if what I turn out is not a disaster smile  To me some of my ships seem crude and I am envious of everyone that can use 3D software. Never had the money to buy the software in order to learn but I have noticed a prog called Blender. In my head I can visualise the shapes but the problem is transferring them to a computer. :roll:

A few more to represent Naval units in Small, Medium, Large and Very Large.
Note the bar at the bottom on icons indicates intended for ground, Space to Ground or Sea use.
The units are generic and not intended to represent specific existing ones.

That's one of the reasons, but also because that's always the way I've done my supplements, and it's easier to tinker around with WRT fonts, sizes etc--I can switch between Calibri and Courier. TBH, I'm not happy with the Courier font for the latest supplement, but too late now, I guess...

I can visualise a shape as well, and drawing on graph paper helps, but trying to transfer that to a computer screen is just too difficult. I can do simple plan views, but the degree of detail you do in your icons blows anything I can hope to do out of the water...

Ha, Ha, Does not need to as the Accurate Repeating Double Damage laser cannon will blast any enemy ships. Just mind the debris on your way out lol

Flotillas? Would you care to expand on the idea? Did you have a specific Super-Heavy Fighter in mind?
Super-Heavy Fighters have Flights and Squadrons. Even if it is a flight of One.
Shuttles are treated as individuals although I suppose flights are not out of the question.
The naval units were intended to cover more than one scale where NS (Naval Small) represents either a ship of Corvette size or smaller in one scale and a small force of up to "X" number of points (might be a destroyer and a couple of escorts) in a larger scale.
Nova, where stats represent 3 x Hull 1 ships or 2 x Hull 2 ships are possibly "on the book" but I do want to keep it as generic as I can with regards to the glyphs. I am trying hard not to make the icons too cluttered as the glyphs then turn to blobs. smile I think an Icon with more than three ships would be too much, see mock up example below.
The three ship could serve as a Flotilla icon (ok these are a re-use of the naval ships but you get the idea.)

I was thinking of the flotillas in my latest (and working-on) supplements, so something like the icons in your second post.

I must admit, it was a spur of the moment ask, and I didn't really think about how difficult it would be to do when I asked. Maybe I should stick to the design of supplements instead...:D

I have added these for anyone that can use them (as I already said, the 2 or 3 ship icon can be handy to show that a small Nova ship stats actually represent more than one ship) just have not posted it yet. Perhaps I should start a thread for the font in files and only update the version with shipyard nova when that gets updated.

The only real difficulty is getting the glyphs to actually look like something at point sizes below 25 or so which depends upon the programme the font is being used with and the user's monitor. I do not mind trying to add more to the font but please, few words can have a huge range of meanings.  smile

Hq Mobile and emplaced. ESG change, centre changed to "E" as the old icon is now Sensors Active and lastly Sensors Passive. These last two are not unlike the counters for sensors wink

Whilst posting on the Shipyard Nove thread I had some  :idea: 's.
Experienced departments:
Experienced Command - Can be used for any one of the other three but costs more.
Experienced Engineer - Ship can move at up to double speed for one turn.
Experienced Repair - Ship can make repair rolls for one turn at +1 without refraining from fighting.
Experienced Tactical - Add 1 to attack dice rolls at a single target that turn.
A ship may have no more than four of these icons in total but in any combination. They are only good for one turn, declared at beginning of turn, then marked off.
Handy for "Command" ships.
Downside is I am unsure of CR cost (Nil SU cost), perhaps Dan could comment.

Also, should I also add Experienced Sensor, reduces ECM by 1 for a turn?

With regards experienced crews, thoughts:
Green untried ships - No experience token allowed
Trained and tried ships - 0 or 1  experience token
Ships with Experienced crew - 0 - 2 experience tokens
Old Hands / Veteran crew - 0 - 3 experience tokens
Command ships get +1 experience token (still max 4 tokens.)
Command token CR of 30
All others CR of 20
