Topic: Suggested Hex Size.

Hello all,
I recently downloaded the Nova Edition quickstart rules, and plan to order the full rulebook soon.  I also looked at a copy of the Admiralty Edition quickstart rules, and I noticed that the suggested map hex size was increased to 2 inches in the Nova rules.

It seems that most ship bases are 1 inch hexes, so I'm curious about why the designers suggest the larger hex size.
Is it so more than one model can be in a hex at one time?  The Nova quickstart rules seem to say that multiple ships can't be in the same hex, but maybe that's just opposing ships?

I'm planning on getting a Hotz mat, so I'd like to get some insight before I place the order.

Thanks.

Re: Suggested Hex Size.

Most minis are larger than one inch and by having 2" hexes, it makes it easier when the ships/fighters/drones are close together.  I have a map that has 1 1/2 ' hexes.  This size works well also.
Cheers & welcome to Starmada. 8-)

Re: Suggested Hex Size.

Or you can play without hexes, that's what I do. it works fine and my friend and I prefer a hexless map.
It allows you to define the 'size of a hex' (for move and range purposes), usually 5 cm per virtual hex.
And it allows you a freddom of move unequated.

Re: Suggested Hex Size.

I like using a map with hexes because it makes the game go much quicker.  Movement is easier, and so is combat.  It is simply counting hexes to determine range, etc.
My friends here in Jacksonville & I can play a game with 3200 points of ships in a little over 2 hours.  These games often last more than five turns.
Cheers

Re: Suggested Hex Size.

Thanks for the replies.
I hadn't considered the size of the actual models themselves.  I don't have any miniatures yet, so it didn't occur to me that some of them would be much larger than the base.
