Aloha - are Damage Checks performed each time a ship takes damage or when the hull boxes for the damage category are completely filled?
Immediately after a ship has been damaged, and again after it has been crippled, the controlling player must make a series of damage checks for the ship:

Just when a damage category is filled. Note that "damaged" in that sentence refers to the first of the three damage categories.
