Topic: SFU Unity

Now that Captain's Log #52 is out, and the new Klingon Armada is (hopefully) slated for release next month, I thought we should begin looking at some of the ships. First up, the Federation Eagle-class CF for Starmada Unity.

Re: SFU Unity

Hmm, some interesting, setting based, additions to the rules I see:

-2PP
-Engine Power Ratio(4)

And of course fire arcs matching the SFU.

Very nice!

Re: SFU Unity

You mentioned in the other thread that there's going to be a free Star Fleet Games upgrade to Unity. Don't suppose you have any details on how that will work, cause I can see three categories of people affected (there may be more, these are admittedly specific to me):

1) Those who bought physical copies.
2) Those who bought PDF copies from the SJ Games site.
3) Those who bought PDF copies from RPG Now.

Re: SFU Unity

I cannot speak with authority, but my assumption is that the PDF files at RPGNow/SJGames will be updated, and those who bought them can simply download the updates.

If you bought a hard copy directly from ADB, Inc., they have records of such.

I believe there was something in CL#52 about a "pinky swear" to cover those who bought hard copies elsewhere.

I was curious about this too. I know my Admiralty edition was bought through the MJ12 website. I'm *pretty* sure my Nova edition was too as I had a beta PDF or maybe it was a production PDF while I waited for my hard copy to arrive, I don't remember... but it seems any records I have in my e-mail have gone the way of the dodo. (Seriously, why did I delete them, especially the one with the beta PDF of the Nova rules?)

Re: SFU Unity

If you purchased from the MJ12 site, I should be able to confirm the sale. However, the discounted/free product will need to be acquired via ADB.

Re: SFU Unity

Yeah, I got SAE:RA from MJ12Games--the only experience I had with ADB (it never turning up and having to contact Dan about it) regarding that made me decide I wouldn't bother getting any other products from them. I might be blaming the wrong party for it, but the old adage about being shy after being bitten holds true.

Re: SFU Unity

Are you doing up SFU "Scouts" in Starmada Unity?  These were ships have had special "Sensors" that allowed some serious electronic warfare shenanigans!

Just curious.

Re: SFU Unity

The SFU conversions are all based upon Federation Commander, not Star Fleet Battles. FC does not have Scouts, so there are no immediate plans to replicate them in Starmada.

(That's not a "no", just a "not yet".)

Re: SFU Unity

Eventually, I'd love to see non-FC things show up in SFU SUE: Scouts, non-Hydran carriers, possibly even PFs. Starmada feels like you could use F&E as a campaign system for it (which is way too time-intensive to do in SFB), and filling in the gaps for at least the unexpanded base game would be nice.

Yes. That right there.

Re: SFU Unity

FWIW, here's the final ship list for the updated Klingon Armada. Shouldn't be any surprises in here.

I was looking at this again and noticed a couple of things that don't quite make sense:

Plasma F & Plasma G - for the PP requirements (which I'm assuming is a new SFU specific rule) it doesn't make sense for the Plasma G to cost less than the Plasma F; the F is the weaker torpedo.

Plasma F DMG - doesn't appear to be consistent. ROF 2 DMG 3 is rather on par with the Plasma G ROF 3 DMG 2 (okay, the math might suggest that the G is slightly stronger). ROF 2 DMG 2 perhaps?

I know that this is kinda late in the game, but at least you're not done any Plasma ships yet.

Also, was wondering why Phasers weren't Range-Based ROF (AE)/Diffuse (NE)/Scatter (Unity, logical progression?).

On first glance, IMO, shouldn't the PH-3 have the pinpoint trait?

PP costs are the "extra" power required at the time of firing. I am assuming ships are automatically providing the non-firing-turn power as needed. Thus, the G-torp (2-2-3) requires 1 extra PP, while the F-torp (1-1-3) requires 2.

The ROF dictates how many turns the torp is on the board, as the Evaporating (Evp) trait removes one marker per turn. Both the G- and F-torps begin with the same damage potential, but the F-torp is weakened more quickly.

Because phasers were way too powerful at close range in those previous editions.

In previous editions, Phaser-3s had the pinpoint trait to reflect their anti-drone role. However, now all phasers now have the Defensive (Dfn) trait.

*drags up almost forgotten SFB rules, grabs math degree just to be safe* Ah yes, now I see your logic in this.

Ah, so that's what Evp is. I thought it was Enveloping; things make more sense now.

Because phasers were way too powerful at close range in those previous editions.

Fair enough. Still, I (personally) think that Phasers could have been changed a little, namely making the Ph-2 ACC 4+ say? (Dunno about the FC background, but I recall that in the SFB background the real difference between the Ph-2 and the Ph-1 was more an issue of fire control than power; same mount, same power requirements [except for the Andros].) And/or maybe making the Ph-1/2/3 Ranges 12/9/3 or 9/9/3 (with Ph-2 definitely being ACC 4+, or diffuse maybe).

Then again, I'm a rules lawyer with a bad literal streak. smile

Re: SFU Unity

Yes, the Phaser-2 could be range 9 with ACC 4+ and still generally fit the SFB/FC damage curve, but I opted for range 6 and 3+ for consistency (all phasers 3+, 9/6/3 ranges).

Re: SFU Unity

Do you have an estimate on when the SFU Unity books will be out?

Re: SFU Unity

My understanding is the new Klingon Armada will hit the ADB web store this weekend.

Re: SFU Unity

Hello I am wondering when the unity versions of Klingon, Romulan, etc. Actually any of the starfleet universe versions of Starmada Unity are  going to be released anytime soon. I thought they were going to be released in March or April of this year but so far as I can tell nothing yet. I am desperate for some Unity, SFU style as I really enjoyed nova . Can anyone answer this question please? Thank you in advance.

ADB is really swamped by their Shapeways miniatures line right now. When it eases up it'll come out then.

Re: SFU Unity

What does everyone think of the new rules? Pretty good I would say. The only concern I have is that shield reinforcement might encourage turtling but I haven't played yet so I could be wrong on that.

Edit- Oops. I was wrong about shield reinforcement. It can only be used once per volley.
