Topic: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Majestic Twelve Games is pleased to announce that Starmada Unity is here!

The Unity Rulebook represents what we expect will become the definitive version of a game that has gone through several updates over more than two decades. In that time, players around the world have grown to love Starmada for its shallow learning curve, depth of experience, and ease of play, even as they differ over which release represents the One True Vision.

The goal of this edition, designated PROJECT UNITY, was to draw from the best parts of each incarnation of the game, from the Compendium and Starmada X, through the Admiralty Edition and 2012's Nova Rulebook, and unify those concepts in a way that allows experienced starship captains to continue enjoying the game they love while drawing new players into the fold.

Long-time players will be thrilled to learn there is no need to convert existing starship designs to this new edition: comprehensive rules are included which allow players to use both Admiralty and Nova ship display sheets with a minimum of modification.

With the release of the Unity Rulebook, we hope to revitalize the game and introduce the thrills of tabletop battles in deep space to a whole new generation. The Universal Game of Starship Combat is back, and better than ever!

SPECIAL OFFER: Purchase the hard copy of Starmada Unity by April 30, 2017, and receive a free PDF download of the book!

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Well, so much for getting a good night's sleep tonight.  lol

Also, do I get the dubious honour of saying I got the first purchase?  big_smile

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Earlier than me, so maybe...:)

Am going to be trying to knock out some ships later...:D

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Darn it, I was playing vidya' games rather than siting here pressing refresh.   lol

But just bought mine.

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Upfront disclosure: I love AE, and view it as 98% perfect.

With that in mind...why should I buy this? What's in it that I can't live without, that couldn't have been put in Rules Annex II, Unobtanium Boogaloo?

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

(Idle curiosity... Are you the same Weirdo from the ADB/FedCom Forum?)

You should buy it because it is 99.44% perfect, which is more than 98%.

...

Oh, you want more detail?

Unity builds more upon Admiralty than upon Nova, it is true, but there are some Nova refinements involved. It's not strictly an update to Admiralty. That being said, I suppose the rules modifications COULD have been presented in Rules Annex II, but for a couple things:

1) That still would have required you to buy another book.

2) Presenting it as "(Admiralty) Rules Annex II" would have implicitly maintained the Admiralty/Nova split, which was the primary problem this edition is meant to address in the first place. It is called UNITY, after all.

What can't you live without?

A) A finely-crafted rules set taking what was best from each prior iteration of the game and building something even better. A comprehensive sequence of play is provided, and the rules are fully cross-referenced.

B) Our most streamlined and balanced construction/point-costing system to date.

C) Dedicated seeking weapons.

D) Six brand-new scenario templates, adding to the six from previous editions.

E) 48 sample ship displays from 14 different fleets across five separate universes.

If that isn't worth $13, I don't know what else to tell you. smile

And Starship Combat News,
and CGL's Battletech forum, if you go to any of those. smile

Oh, you want more detail?

Yep. smile
As things stand, I still don't know exactly what's in Unity that's different from AE. And my budget's tight enough these days that I'm not getting anything sought unseen.

From my perspective, you've yet to list a downside. My biggest priority here is to NOT move away from AE.

AE has all of these. Okay, Seekers aren't technically weapons, but I like that right now they don't eat up one of my extremely limited weapon types.

Okay, the scenario templates are cool. smile

Which universes? If they're ones I already play in, you've got my attention. No idea where you'd get the licenses, though.

Honestly, the only thing I thought AE was missing was a way for ships to support each other, kinda like the ELINT and shared point defense rules from B5Wars. As is, there really isn't anything an escort ship can do to protect another ship aside from shooting at his buddy's attackers, and hope that convinces them to go away.

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Well, you asked what you were missing, and I told you. If it's not enough to sway you, so be it. smile

In the end, you don't have to move away from Admiralty. The Starmada police aren't going to kick in your door for playing an "outdated" edition (I believe there are still some Compendium advocates out there somwhere). That's the reason I included the Backwards Compatibility rules; those who absolutely love Admiralty (or Nova) can meet up with Unity players and play with little to no problem.

As far as ELINT/mutual support go, I think that should be a separate discussion topic.

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Oh, so we're not going to kick in the door? Okay, then I'll just...err...put this down and...err...go somewhere else, shall I?

/puts down 'doorknocker' and wanders sheepishly away

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Hello,

I just purchased Starmada for the first time. I decided to take advantage of the deal being offered for both the book and the PDF. So far I am liking what I am seeing, I think the greatest attraction for me is the chance to use a simple game system with diverse choices that produce deep gameplay. The fact that I am not stuck with someone else's premade ships is a nice bonus to be sure. I did just post a question about seeking weapons over in the "Game Design" section of the forum. If you guys have time to help me out I would be very appreciative.

Re: Starmada Unity Rulebook is now available!

Welcome!

FWIW, I moved your topic from "Game Design" to "Starmada". The Game Design board is more about designing NEW games, not discussion of tactics in existing games.
