Topic: Out of curiosity...

What types of CR totals do people tend to play with?

I ask because in looking through the posted ship designs and some other places on the web, I see ships upwards of 3000CR!  It seems like even many cruiser-type ships are designed around 1000CR each.

In my group, we've been playing with about 1500CR (and may stretch that up a bit, but not by too much).

I just cant even imagine trying to field some of those high CR ships. I mean, for 3000CR, you can have whole NAVIES of 'normal' ships. smile

Anyways, it looks like my group might be on the 'low tech' side of the universe. We've been sticking to TL0 and we try not to 'crowd' our ships with Specials. We mostly end up with small craft in the 65-125 point range, cruisers ball-parking around 150-450, and capital ships usually around 350-1000 or so at the outside.

Are we missing out on something? Personally, I'd think it would be a nightmare just trying to keep track of all the gadgets and whatnot on some of those 2500+CR monsters! smile

So, just out of idle curiosity, what do you typically play with when you sit down for a battle? 1000? 1500? 10000? Do you typically have just a few ships or larger swarms?

For the record, so far, we are looking more at 1500 CR to field between 4-9 ships.

Re: Out of curiosity...

Biggest active ship in the campaign I am currently running is about 350 CR...

And in a solo campaign I am playing biggest ship is about 400 with a 700pt carrier.

But, these are generally low tech (0 at the highest)

Re: Out of curiosity...

I think what you're seeing in the high points values is due more to the tweaked out weapons loads than equipment other than fighters.

The Whodari for instance...their electron pulse torps only cost 30 SU for two arcs vs 141 for two arcs of Hivel Gun.  On a speed 8 ship that means the offensive point value runs around 46 pts for the EPT and 329 pts for the Hivel.  Multiple mounts run up pretty darn fast point-wise. big_smile

Re: Out of curiosity...

Most of my ships run from 26 to 350 points with the rare ship going higher.... I have fielded a ship at 650.

Most games are around 2000, although we have done a couple at 3000 and once at 4000 (major battle in a running campaign....)

Most of the time, we run at TL0, or occasionally TL+1.....
ALthough one guy that plays wants to run a TL+8 game with a 8000 point cap to see what we can build........

Re: Out of curiosity...

I mostly play scenario or "off the cuff" battles, so the CR differs wildly from engagement to engagement. To the best of my memory, I think most of the battles have been on the smallish side at 1000-1500 CR per side.

As for ships, I almost always use TL -2 or -1 ships, with very few ships that have an average tech level higher than that. I have some cruisers that are only about 120 CR or thereabouts, and frigates that are worth next to nothing. Usually those, cruisers have tended towards the 250-300 CR mark.

Re: Out of curiosity...

My designs topped out with the Ashkriel designs I posted yesterday--4.5K points...:D

Before that, I think some supercarriers and dreadnoughts for Davids' SDG campaign.

Re: Out of curiosity...

I don't think I could identify a real average...I've run ships (flocks of ships) that run as low as single-digit CRs and ones that were up in the 3000 point range myself.  The more expensive stuff was generally higher-tech, but I usually default to tech-0 just to save on math.

I do notice that my fleet actions tend to involve more cheap ships, while small squadron fights use more costly, elaborate designs.  Haven't really tried much one-on-one duelling with Starmada (SFB is my preference for that), but I would think you'd want complex vessels for that format, with lots of special equipment, odd weapons, etc.

One thing Starmada does do *very* well is "OGRE in space" gaming, where one side has a single supership and the other a flock of popcorn.  Given equal CRs, these games are generally quite well balanced...a good sign that the CR system is working properly, in my book.

Re: Out of curiosity...

Hello everyone!
Two weeks ago, a friend and I here in Jacksonville played two 8,000 point games (!)   My larger ships are mass 29 & 30, speed 5 and cost between c1700 and 1950.  The 8,000 point  battles went fast because of the large ammount of expendible weapons my friend used, even tho his largest ships are only 20 Hull.  Now that we limit each ship to only up to 5 expendible weapons, with the total of {ROF+PEN+Damage} not greater than five, these battles last longer.  Last week  only played c5,000 point games.  Fortunately, my friend is very good at keeping track of numbers and dice.  It makes for some fun games...

We play again tommorrow Saturday 4/22;  I will let everyone know how it goes!  smile
