Ixian Benevolency:

The Ixians are an evolved humanoid race organized under a pacifistic theocracy.  The only ship seen outside of their home system other than merchants, passenger liners, or rescue ships is the Pax class Escort.  The Ixians do not believe in waging war on their neighbors or taking life, even in defense of theirs.  Naturally, this has some denizens of the galaxy thinking the Ixians to be pushovers.  While the do abhor violence, a special sect of monks is tasked with the defense of the theocracy and its flock.  These are the defenders…or, as they are more popularly known at home, the Order of the Silk Glove.
The Ixian Defense force is made up entirely from members of the Order with special dispensation to use only enough force to protect the system.  Being a non-militant race, two classes of vessels compose their entire defense force.  The previously mentioned Pax class escort and the Defender class cruiser.  Small squadrons of these ships patrol the inner and outer system, keeping all safe from raiders or more violent neighboring governments.
Due to their well known pacifism, most warring stellar nations turn to the Ixians to act as mediators and ambassadors in peace settlements and cease fires.

The key to the Ixian defense is two-fold.  The development of the ‘Pacifier Cannon' and employment of Stealth technology.  The Pacifier Cannon inflicts no harm on a ship, instead targeting the crew and rendering them unconscious for several hours to several days.  Ixian ships mount no other offensive weapons yet are considered rather difficult targets thanks to the stealth fields and decoys each ship carries.  Ixian vessels are also equipped with advanced medical facilities to deal with any inadvertent casualties from battle or rescue operations.

All Ixian ships are designed with TL +1 Shields.

The Pax class escort is the workhorse of the Ixian Defence Force, serving as a diplomatic messenger, patrol craft, and sometimes convoy escort.  The hull is a living creature cloned and genetically altered for space instead of the deep Ixian oceans.  Most of the equipment used by the Ixians is of biological origin enhanced with advanced electronics and steel-like glass.  This is the only ‘warship' the Ixians possess that is seen outside of their home system.

While the Pax class serves as the workhorse of the Ixian Defense Force, the monks knew that it was insufficient to withstand any determined system assault by itself.  Thus was conceived the Defender class cruiser.  With heavier shields and twice the pacifier mounts, this ship is capable of quickly subduing aggressive vessels.  The IDF felt that with adequate numbers, larger vessels would not be needed, thus preventing any neighboring powers from forming misconceptions about the role of the IDF.  Defender class vessels are never sent out of the home system.  They act as command units for the six ship patrol squadrons of Pax escorts.  Most sit in the docking slips of their assigned outpost station praying that they will not be needed that day or the next.

The Ixians have few peace-keeping vessels but they are much more diversified when it comes to humanitarian needs.  The Burro is one of the more frequently seen ships in areas that have seen recent combat or out on the belters rim.  It searches for ships in distress, flying Dutchmen, derelict mine fields, and the like performing rescue and towing services at need or just cleaning up after the galactic warmongers are no longer shooting at each other.  The Burro's living hull is heavily armored enabling it to survive in the hazardous areas where it is frequently needed.  Well equipped with medical and passenger facilities, this ship is a welcome sight to many stranded among the stars.

Slower than most Ixian ships, the Sans Merci class is built to provide a mobile hospital fitted with the best scientific and medical technology available.  The organic hull of the ship is heavily shielded to provide the best protection possible to the patients and families who may be aboard at any given time.  Frequently seen in the rear areas of battle zones or in orbit around plague stricken worlds, the Sans Merci answers to any who are in need no matter what species or political entity they belong to.  For this reason, even the most hard-bitten pirate avoids attacking these ships knowing that someday in the future such ships may be the only thing between them and the grim reaper.

The slowest of the Ixian vessels, this ship with its organic hull is also the largest.  The Garden class exists to provide relief to worlds stricken by famine or natural disaster in the form of advanced hydroponics.  The hydroponic bays of this ship can provide food for thousands, often times standing as the only shield between life and a slow death by starvation.  Strong shields protect the ship from orbital debris or the occasional desperate acts of the people they've come to help.  In the worst instances, a Garden class vessel may be escorted by one or two Pax class escorts.  Onboard science labs and passenger facilities help to analyze planetary soil conditions and plant life to assist the local population in restoring its agricultural capabilities.  Unfortunately, where as the Sans Merci class is generally immune from attack, the Garden class is a favorite target of raiders and the like who would just love having their own mobile larder to provide their base with a continual food source.  The Ixians refuse to arm their relief vessels however, instead providing escorts in areas known to be dangerous.

The Protector class space stations serve as the orbital dockyards for the IDF and as the last line of defense from invaders.  Massive pacifier cannon emplacements stud the surfaces of these organic structures behind the strongest shielding known.  As if that wasn't bad enough the station is equipped with a lavish stealth suite enabling it to repel aggressors as it chooses.
Located along the girth of the structure are half a dozen docking points for the IDF cruisers and nearly two dozen smaller ports for the escorts.  Well equipped with medical bays to handle casualties after any conflict.  At the core of each protector class station is a large chapel where the ship and station crews may renew their spiritual strength and commitment to peace.

(*rather than go back and compute additional emplacements to take the space of the hyperdrive I just assumed that the space would be consumed by the docking points for the cruisers and escorts.)
