Topic: What's going on here?

Herein we will share designs and race philosophies. Please respect Intellectual Property Rights.

jimbeau will moderate pretty severely, and I'll probably cut off any inappropriate or off-topic posts.

Just ship designs, then.

Re: What's going on here?

Coolness Jim.

First question: Would you rather we do separate threads for the differing "fleets" or just a single "grab-all" thread?

I'll have to do some typing to get my T'ekua into the comp in the meantime. big_smile

Re: What's going on here?

thread by class?
(frigate, BB, etc...)

I know this would be tough, cause your idea of a frigate versus mine may differ... but I have been using displacement numbers as a guideline in my materials, and if you pair it with something like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rating_sys … Royal_Navy

And use the number of Starmada batteries instead of gun decks, I think we could get a pretty elegant standard for cross reference in our designs...

Re: What's going on here?

Here's a try at a classification system I just whipped up, its a total off-the-top draft, so attack it all you like.

CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

NOTE
Passive Defensive Systesms: Armor Plating of various sorts, Ionic Shieldings, Redundancies, Anti-Fighter Batteries, a PDS, or ECM, Shockwave, or Carronade.
Passive Aggressive Systems: EWS, LRS, TD&R, Overthrusters, Stealth Generator, Stutterdrive, Shockwave, or Carronade.
Active Systems: Fighter Bay, Drones, Mines, Marines, Sunbursts, Decoys.

Battleship: (BB)
• 3 Batteries
• 6 Banks
• 15 Hull
• At least two passive defensive systems, at least two passive aggressive systems.

Battlecruiser (CA)
• 3 Batteries
• 4 Banks
• 14 Hull
• At least one passive defensive system, one passive aggressive system, and one active system.

Cruiser (CB)
• 3 Batteries
• 4 Banks
• 12 Hull
• At least two subsystems.
• No less than 4 Engines.

Light Cruiser (CL)
• 2 Batteries
• 3 Banks
• 9 Hull
• At least two subsystems.
• No less than 5 Engines.

Destroyer (DD)
• 2 Batteries
• 2 Banks
• 7 Hull
• At least one aggressive or active subsystem.
• No less than 6 Engines.

Frigate or Sloop (FF)
• 1 Battery
• 2 Banks
• 5 Hull
• At least one defensive or passive system.
• No less than 6 Engines.

Cutter or Attack Ship (LC)
• 1 Battery
• 1 Bank
• 2 Hull
• At least one aggressive, non-active system.
• No less than 7 Engines.

Re: What's going on here?

I'd just as soon see it tied to hull size and not much else.  Don't get me wrong, Brother Adso -- I admire the degree of thought you've given it, but I think denoting batteries and systems takes too much away from the flexibility of the designer and creative character of the race.

Personally, based on the sizes used in the Brigade Models contest in 2004, I'd say something like this:

Corvette/Monitor:  1 to 2

Frigate/Destroyer:  3 to 4

Light Cruiser:  5 to 6

Heavy Cruiser:  7 to 8

Battleship:  9 to 10

Dreadnought:  11 to 13

Superships:  14+

And your light carriers, escort carriers, and heavy carriers would be interspersed therein.  Variations on the themes above would fit in with their respective types -- battlecruisers, for instance, would just be size 7 or 8 but with added engine space at the expense of weapons/shields, sort of thing.

Re: What's going on here?

This is where I think the SXCA generated displacement value comes into play, providing a way to differentiate similar hull sizes based on the volume of equipment on board.

This doesn't match what I have been using in my campaigns... but is in line with what I had been thinking. Similar to BrotherAdso's, without being quite as complex.

Re: What's going on here?

I use the Shipyard sheet, so unfortunately I dont get the cool 'fluff' stats like Displacement or Crew size.  sad

I've devised my own little key for what size = what designation. Much of that is because I've assigned a specific miniature to each hull size designation and it makes life a whole easier when everyone can look at the miniature and know roughly what size the ship is without having to constantly ask the opponent.

As far as the designation list posted, I think it works as well as any, but I tend to use the designations a little differently. For example, I use 'Escort' as a designation for certain roles, not certain sizes. The same goes for 'Assault' or 'Heavy'. These are generally more to term my ship's capabilities/roles rather than absolute size or battery count.

Just my $.02....

Re: What's going on here?

With the system I actually have in use I have roles for missile ships, minelayers, landers, marine assault ships, etc.

Well, I figured we all had our own systems.
We probably won't get a standard.  smile

It was worth a try, though.

Re: What's going on here?

Heres my own system of ship type nomenclature:

1-2 hulls: Gunboat (GB), Patrol Boat (PB), Corvette (FFL)
3-4 hulls: Destroyer (DD), Frigate (FF), Escort Carrier (CVE)
5-6 hulls: Destroyer (DD), Escort Carrier (CVE)
7-8 hulls: Light Cruiser (CL), Light Carrier (CV), Strike Cruiser (CL)
9-10 hulls: Light/Heavy Cruiser (CL/CA), Light Fleet Carrier (CVL), Assault Cruiser (CAA)
11-12 hulls: Heavy Cruiser (CA), Light Fleet Carrier (CVL), Scout Cruiser (ECA)
13-16 hulls: Battlecruiser (BC), Fleet Carrier (CVA), Assault Battlecruiser (BCA)
17-20 hulls: Dreadnought (DN), Supercarrier (CVS), Superdreadnought (SD)

However, sometimes I'll increase or lower the sizes to fit a particular idea. Sometimes I might class a 6 huller as a light cruiser, or a 12 huller as a battlecruiser. Other times, I might class a corvette as a 4 huller. Its all relative.

Re: What's going on here?

I would think that each race would have its own criteria for class sizes.  What to me is a cruiser may, to some larger race be a frigate.

I say, design away and let there be no size standard (until I change my mind big_smile )

And not every race is going to use the standard 'human' nomenclature of a cruiser or destroyer.  Some refer to destroyers as raiders or flankers and cruisers as strikers or warriors...08]

That's pretty much what happened during the Cold War when all the naval analysts were sounding off about the "cruiser gap" between the US and USSR;  the Soviets were calling their destroyers "cruisers", so even though the US had more ships of a tonnage that NATO planners would designate "cruiser"-size, the analysts and media were left with the impression that the Soviets were outgunning the West, which was simply untrue.
