Topic: K E B?
Sorry I'm probably missing something, but I haven't been able to figure out what K, E, and B are in the shipyard program. I did poke through my rules, but it isn't clicking.

Its from the VBAM: Starmada Edition. KEB is a form of defence used in the Kuissan/Boltian universe.
Thanks. I guess that means I need to download a different version without it. I'd seen comments about it, but didn't get what it was about.

KEB stands for Kinetic, Energy & Ballistic. Basically each weapon is defined as to which one of the 3 types it is (i.e. a mass driver would be kinetic, lasers would be energy and missiles would be ballistic). Shielding is also defined as to what it can block. If the race you are fighting primarily uses ballistic weapons, you would probably up your ballistic shielding.
As someone else pointed out on the e-mail list, it adds an "extra layer of strategy to ship design/counterdesign".
Jimmy
The forthcoming VBAM Stars Divided series uses it too.
I would have to defer to the playtesters, but it has driven some good discussion and review of designs and series modifications to designs, IMO.
It is just added depth, more universe/fluff specific.
Is there a topic or group that gives a detailed explaination of how it works? Does anyone have an opinion of it negative or positive they would like to share?

Not sure, exactly, what you are asking...
The defensive value of a targeted ship varies based on what type of weapon (K/E/B) is firing at it. Each defensive type can range from 0-5, as with regular Starmada shields.
The sum of the three values divided by three (rounded up) is equal to the shield value of the ship.
As you take a shield hit, you mark off 1 level in each category.

I am biased, but can say that I really like the system. It adds a level of complexity to both tactical decision making and ship design. It also adds some spice and variety to different racial or fleet designs.

Yep, that's what I was asking. Sounds like an easy way to even further add to the unique flavor of different sci-fi systems and ships. (like you say.)
I might have to check this out more with a few test games.
One other question I should ask a little off topic. Has someone out there created a common weapons catalog? Basically just a generic list of commom scifi weapon systems that a person can pull from to throw together design concepts quickly. (And tweak later.)
Including the KEB class of the weapon would be handy here obviously.
Thanks for your answer to the first question as well!
I started that idea here.... and just drawing from computer games, ended up with almost 7 dozen weapons......
Also, in a lot of movies, they never define the weapons, they just have them shooting (Wingcommander, the new Battlestar Galactica, ect.)
The list started getting extremely unweildy really quick. Also, it depends on your view.... In battletech, you have a gauss rifle.... basically a rail gun.
Some people only consider that idea feasible as a spinal mount....
Others use the approach that you see in CAV where there are different calibres of gauss rifles, to include rapid fire versions......
I am now creating my weapon lists based on race.... which allows one unique feature. My Kayeshi empire is a +1 tech base for weapons, but their newest development, the Plasma Induction Cannon is actually still at
-1, due to it's experimental nature..... yes, I hand design their ships to make it work......LOL
I'd love it if the spreadsheet allowed you to pick a tech level for each piece of equipment....... but I don't mind doing the paper math.
For the Kayeshi... their fighters are at -1 tech, while their weapons are at +1. Everything else is at zero.... with the above mentioned exceptions......
John
The Shipyard sheets that I posted have the option of each weapon having a different tech level.
That may be of use to you.
