This is my only real complaint about Starmada. There is little or no depth in seeking weapons (by which I mean weapons that are represented on the table as seperate entities). It would be fun to create the weapon types you describe, but at present there is no way to cost them.

Well, then let me fix this complaint! smile

All of the customized fighter options can be applied to drones without too much trouble, and the point costs should be pretty much on target...

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

The  Kayeshi Fleet I was designing also carried drones on a number of the ships in the fleet.....  I would launch them and have them stick near the launching ship... finally, when I had enough to do what I wanted, they would all head off for the target......

Dan, outside of the one shot expendible weapons, and the unlimited shots normal weapons... do  you think there is a way to incorporate ammunition costs into the weapons???

Cool! that should make it worth while to add the Kzinti.

Kzinti tactics in SFB are similar... Launch a wave of drones, then follow it at a slight distance. The drones will either a) tie up the target ships weapons so he can't fire at the Kzinti ship, or b) damage the target enough that the Kzinti ship can finish it off. smile

Err... I'm not sure why you can't do it with the existing expendable rules. E.g., if you want 10 shots, just add 10 expendable weapons...

Or am I missing something?

I think they are trying to simulate a single laucher with only a few shots.  One of the biggest pains in trying to convert Full Thrust to Starmada are those stupid salvo launchers!

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

You could just apply a multiplyer as is done for expendable.

0.25 for single shot (0.2 for Starmarda seems to generate a concern over balance therefore 0.25 may be more appropriate)
0.5 for 2 shot weapon
0.75 for 3 shot weapon
No bonus for 4 or more shots.

Use as above and shift multipliers as playtesting suggests. You can always tell where the inbalance is, ship designers home in on it pretty quick.

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

That's exactly what expendable weapons are used for.

You add just the shots you have ammo for. then when you've shot the weapon, you strike off a box as if it were hit.

how's that different from a weapon with only a few shots?

The 2 major differences between 5 expendable weapons and a single weapon with 5 shots is that: 1) I can fire off all 5 expendable weapons in a single turn and 2) It takes 5 points of damage to that damage track to kill the expendables, whereas it only takes 1 point of damage to kill the single weapon with 5 shots.

Ah... now I see the concern.

Simple enough to correct.

Build an expendable weapon according to rule G.4, then multiply by the square root* of the desired number of shots.

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

And of course, we get a square route in there.....LOL

Yes, I was looking at the fact that I wanted a weapon with limited numbers of shots that could only fire once a turn, and could be taken with a single hit...... I tried it the other way with basically 20 single shot "torpedoes" but would only launch 4 a turn..... however, when one of my friends used the ship, he unloaded all 20 torpedoes at once....  (1/3/3 with range 18) and well..... it was kind of messy....... LOL

The scenario was supposed to be a starbase (hull 40) and several small ships, holding off a larger fleet for 6 turns, until help arrived.....

He took the ship, ran it in to medium range of the base... and then unloaded all 20 torpedoes at once..........

It pretty much ended the game on turn 3......

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

Now, we just need to update the Construction assisstant to handle this calculations.....LOL

P.S.

Happy Birthday Dan (saw the 35 years and 4 days remark on the other thread....LOL)

I just turned 36 in April, so yeah... we are grognards.

I am currently working on a new starbase... 6 sections, created in a hexagon, with 20 hull per section, and dual spinal mounts in each section.

Then again, one of my friends thinks that my newest creation is gross.....

Hull 9 with 4 spinal mounts
It only has 2 other weapons... small range 6 rotary guns, one on either side, for fighter defense.

I use it as a stand-off artillery unit in a fleet. I even designed figs for the ship.

I don't want to do that until the thing becomes "official"... but that may be happening soon... smile

Thanks! Does this mean I have to grumble a lot and talk about the way things used to be, back when D&D had only 2 editions and GW actively supported games like Blood Bowl?

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

As soon as I manage to get a digital camera.........LOL

I scratch build all of my figs from balsa and small bits of styrene, or anything else I get my hands on......
And I enjoy designing my own ships, so my fleets tend to be unique.

Heh, I got a DECADE on both you youngsters!!

Why back in MY day, all wargamiers used were D6's! and we LIKED it that way!!!

Nobody but those RPG weenies had Miniatures, REAL men used COUNTERS, and we LIKED it that way!

Real Grognards only used cards to play POKER! A real MEN'S game...

Dang-nab it, these youngsters got it so easy nowadays....

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

I remember when Dungeon and Dragons came out... it was in little white booklets, and you needed a copy of the chainmail rules to play.....LOL

I've used counters, but figurines just look better.

You all do realize that we are hijacking this thread....... we might want to mention Star Trek, and Starmada (OK, spirit of the thread preserved !!)

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

Hi

Has anyone done any Starmada X stats for TNG/DS9 era ST ships? Or even Enterprise era?

Thanks

James

Re: Star Trek Starmada X

Seen some threads on this site for Star Trek conversions.
Worth a look at.
