Topic: Back Cover Ideas

Hey Folks,

We are planning on doing a formal print run for selling to stores.  Does anyone have specific ideas about what would be worth putting on the back cover to attract gamers' interest, in terms of a text description (we already have a graphic in mind)?  In other words, what do you think the game offers the typical gamer that makes it worth purchasing?

Here are the aspects that attracted me.

- no rolling of buckets of dice (i.e. an attack is resolved with one die roll)
- squad based activation
- varied, consistant, and comprehensive army construction
- fast paced play
- playing the game requires tactical sense rather than strategic sense.

How you would put that into highlights on the back of a book. I am not sure, but that is what drew me into your game.

what he said, but add in the balanced army construction that applies to all forces, including the book armies.

Re: Back Cover Ideas

As above plus something about being able to design and build the army YOU want .

Re: Back Cover Ideas

I'd write it in pretty much point form all the virtues mentioned above. I'd tend to like to make the point that DVG can be tweaked to help make the atmosphere, miniature scale, and scale of engagement closer to the gamer's preference. From hard-edged near-future dystopia to brooding space-fantasy, as it were, and from small elite squads of the very best in fierce tactical engagements to expendable masses marching blindly to their doom. Talk it up a bit and catch their attention, *then* explain. Also, I wouldn't worry too much if an English major accuses you of using too many descriptors, pronouns, or adverbs. Nobody else cares. Hell, look at 40K, Warmachine etc.

Re: Back Cover Ideas

The working draft of back cover wording is now on the product description page:

Any comments appreciated.

Re: Back Cover Ideas

Looks  good to me.

Re: Back Cover Ideas

I just figured out, after a vague gnawing anxiety for weeks, what is wrong with the back cover:

"Rare is the era in which so much power has amassed in the hands of so few

THIS IS THE CHRONICLE OF SUCH AN ERA"

This is wrong. It's circular. Just use the first sentence. Does anyone else see this? It kind of breaks down into "This is a rare era, like itself."

Maybe it's just me, but there's something snagging every time I read it.

Am I crazy?

Re: Back Cover Ideas

Rare is the era in which so much power has amassed in the hands of so few. THIS IS THE CHRONICLE OF SUCH AN ERA

We're missing periods in the sentences.

It is roughly translated into

This is the chronicle of a unique era in which nearly all the power in the universe has been amassed in the hands of just a few political entities.

but that's a lot wordier.

Re: Back Cover Ideas

I would put more emphasis on the Army Customizer and its versatility, and make it clear that you can use any minis you own to play the game.  The ability to play a smart set of rules with minis from a stupid game was a big selling point for me.  Gamers like adaptable rules sets.

Re: Back Cover Ideas

There is a fair empahasis on Army Customizer(TM) already, I think, but I agree that it might be prudent to mention that you can use whatever miniatures you like. I would perhaps attempt to stress the "Defiance - all you need" aspect a bit more.

That said, I don't have any solid suggestions as to how to go about it. I'm really bad at selling stuff. If it helps, feel free to pilfer anything I've written on the 'net on the subject.
