Topic: Possible source book ideas

When I read Dan's post earlier about "where does it go next" I considered it heavily.  Many days of solemn meditation followed. I came to this conclusion:

There is room in the universe for Starmada Sourcebooks.

Several other throughts occurred to me, not least among them was "will Rachel Weisz ever make another movie".  However, three main points filtered just below the Rachel question, they are:

1) Is there enough interest to fund this project?
2) Where does the source come from to do this?
3) Do I have enough time to lead such a project?

I think I know the answers, and here they are:

1) I'll leave the first up to all y'all (in the form of a poll).
2) I think we ask permission to use ships from the Bourbaki Basin.
3) Probably not, but that never stopped me before.

Also, if there are books to be published, how many races in each, do we develop an entire universe of source material or just share our ship designs? Other questions will occur, but these are just off the top of my head for now.

Thoughts?

(oh yeah, Rachel Weisz is in the process of six(!) movies planned for 07/08 yay!)

You don't need some poll or study for this one Jim.
Of course there's room for sourcebooks, and they'll sell.
It's just a matter of having or making the time to do them.
It's that simple.

Re: Possible source book ideas

Well, I'd be willing to do ship designs for anything Starmada you have in mind.

Re: Possible source book ideas

I would like to work on a race and its designs as well.

Re: Possible source book ideas

I'd say that we develop an entire universe of source materials.... fluff is good.

Re: Possible source book ideas

I'd be happy to--assuming that anyone would even bother to look at my designs...

As for buying? Yeah, if I had the cash I would.

Re: Possible source book ideas

Of course I'd be glad to help with ship design.  If the book has multiple contributors it would need a good developer/editor to make sure the various faction sections didn't contradict each other.  I was one of the designers for the Brigade book (CDSU) and it felt like I was flying in the dark since I didn't know if my vision would mesh with the other authors.  I think the faction section would have been a bit better if each nation was tied to a common background or timeline.

Re: Possible source book ideas

Anyone wanna take the lead on a Defiance setting book?  I'm a bit rusty on ship designing...

Re: Possible source book ideas

Hmm, getting people to submit ship designs, that will certainly be the hardest part of this project
Now getting good socio/political entities and governments that's a different story altogether as is a listing of viable economic background descriptions.
That plus the obligatory fluff to fill in the holes and give us an idea of the core philosophies of the civilizations involved.
Now, where do we go from here?

Re: Possible source book ideas

Well, I've got a race or two (well, actually, twenty, but two for now) that might be interesting...

Re: Possible source book ideas

In fact, I've probably got enough material that I can put together an entire sourcebook of my own. If anyone is interested in helping me put something together (mainly editing and proof-reading), or if anyone wants to read what I've got...

Heres a taster. Note that this is not by any means an official ship, just something I put together a few minutes ago. However, this is how one race might look.

Re: Possible source book ideas

Heh, I can't help with editing, but if you can wait a few months, I MIGHT be able to squeeze out a few ship illustrations....

(I'm working on Iron Stars next supplement, and in idle mode for Wardogs, and there might be another project in the mid-term if things go right)

Re: Possible source book ideas

Yeah, sure, I can wait a few months. I'll get the basics done, such as a complete background to the whole thing (I'm working on a mental piece of fiction as well with the story, essentially revolving around a first contact).

But is there anyone interested in editing? If not, I'll plough on on my own. I guess I could do the editing on my own, but I'd rather have someone with experience helping out.

Re: Possible source book ideas

Ships I find a doddle. Thats why I started on Wardogs. Never really done tanks, walkers etc..  Call it a challenge.
Though for some of the designs I have had some nice little sketches which helps.

If you need ships just ask.  Sure I can it something in when the time calls.
All I need is stats and a rough idea what you need, shape wise. The TCW ships design premise was 'Big and Slabby'. Sketches  are good too.

I tend to design main hull, engines, bridge then weapons. Chop change and add based on hull, its easy to pull each hull class from basic design.
The Key is trying not to make each hull 'samey'

Here endeth the design lesson.

Re: Possible source book ideas

Okay, I've got to thinking and I think that doing a VBAM:SX source book might be a good idea.

Ever since Friday I've been working on the races, but the primary thing I've found out is that I want the capability for players of VBAM to pick up and play with the ships that I've designed and, because of that, its going to be hard to design pure-SX ships that will have a hard time of conversion.

The secondary thing is that the races I'm hoping to bring to the source book have originally came from VBAM:SX campaigns I've tried to start up. Especially the two protagonists of the campaign.

I'll post a message up on the VBAM boards and see if anyone is interested. If there isn't enough demand, however, I'll put this on the back burner.

Re: Possible source book ideas

well, there's nothing stopping you from doing that, of course, but I was talkng about more of a Starmada background source book than any crossover thing.

Re: Possible source book ideas

Yeah, I know. The primary problem as I mentioned, however, is that over a year of VBAM:SX work has contaminated me...:)

I could knock out a few Starmada-only ships (actually, I'm thinking of a few right now), but if anyone was interested in a VBAM:SX crossover that had me as the primary author, I'd go ahead with that and throw in the SX ships later.
