Topic: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

Hey Guys,

My current project is to convert the Union from Vor into Defiance. Since I have a whole nice collection of those miniatures, I figured I would use them. Of course, I was changing them a bit to make them more of a futuristic U.S. military. I am not going to do the hover tanks and such.

The nice thing is the Vor minis are now back in print and you can get them at Ironwind Metals Site (http://www.ralpartha.com/vor_news.htm).

I was wondering what armies are you guys making and what miniatures you are using? Where are you getting these miniatures?

I am strongly considering writing up a list for Hasslefree's Grymn.

Infranites from Legions of Steel by Global Games.
Brotherhood from Warzone.
Cybertronic from Warzone.
Aliens from the movie Aliens.
Stormtroopers from Star Wars.
Tau from 40K.
Spiders (kind of like Tyranids, but with eight legs).

maybe a few more, eventually.

Oddly enough, I've been working on converting the Neo-Soviets from Vor into Defiance.  So far, I've done the Rad Troopers!  Yay me...

Beat you to that one

Anyway, as usual, I've been toying with numerous force ideas. In order of "likelihood to come to pass" the latest of these would be:

[*]Mishima, ostensibly HELL cloned from Japanese of the Shogunate era. Models obviously enough would include a lot of Warzone Mishima and maybe some other scifi Japanese style models as well.[*]Small armies based on Cobalt-1 forces of Ar-Men, Palansi & Abhor and Ygraine, simply because Bob Naismith's models are nice but the rules... ah well.[*]Forces based on the militaries of interplanetary "nations" as described in the background fluff for a Finnish hard scifi LARP I wrote some stuff for (sorry, there isn't any info available in English); these obviously enough wouldn't use the Defiance universe as all of the above. I haven't yet charted the models sufficiently to make a list.

Finally, I intend to use a list made for models from the old GW Eldar Harlequin range in the upcoming Defiance expansion Close Quarters Battle, if and when playtesting for that goes ahead.

I am happy to give comments on any lists folks can draft up.  I intend to collect as many as possible and make them available as downloads.

Re: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

I'll be doing a
(Legions of Steel) UNE humans, heavilly modified
(Legions of Steel) Infranites, somewhat modified
(Legions of Steel) Machines, the LoS themselves, somewhat modified

All of these lists are going to be either a little or very much different from the  originals, particularly in terms of squad makeup or morale, but also in terms of variety, to hopefully field a working force at tech3 with the miniatures I own. Also I'm scared of small squads.

The UNE in particular, with a "Superfortress" mech and a CAV 28mm "Despot" tank ( the latter from http://www.hellionproductions.com ) are going to be fairly vehicle-heavy, and all are going to be overstocked with size 3 infantry and understocked with scouts, since that's what I could get hold of during the brief moment between me discovering this excellent range and it going out of production. Hmm, maybe my UNE recce commandos should become elite hero snipers.....

Re: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

amazonminiatures.com is currently selling legions of steel miniatures. apparently they own the molds for UK production.

and they have all three scout models.

thought you'd like to know.

Re: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

Aw man. There go the finances.

http://www.amazonminiatures.com/catalogue/legions_of_steel.asp [EDIT: this page likes IE and not Firefox]

Oh, if and when I ever complete it, I'm kind of putting together a force of "Elves.... In.... Spaaaaaace!" built around the Falcon Grav Tank, Jetbikes, and a hodgepodge of infantry yet to be finalised, depending largely on what I can get for cheap (already have the vehicles). Oh, and somewhere in there I'm going to find a way of fitting in Reaper's "Warbride of Khardullis" just because it's freakin' awesome and embodies everything that howling banshees were MEANT to be.

Of course, as such things always seem to go, I also find Josh Deck's art made metal by Metal Mammoth's own art to be a highly desirable thing, so I'll be watching that range acquisitively too.

Have a look at this. Sure it's toy stuff, but 48 infantry and 8 light vehicles/ mecha for $40 USD sure sounds like cheap fun to me. Is anyone planning to grab one of these and stat them up? It promises to be very entertaining in its own right!

I actually just picked this box set up.  The models are pretty nice considering how cheap they are.  The terrain is awesome.  I also grabbed one of the single vehicle boxes.  If you play IG, it would make a VERY cheap alternative to the official Sentinel...

One thing about the big boxed set: There are only 20 infantry in it.  5 squads of 4.  I thought there would be 48 too given the description...

I am thinking about writing a Defiance list for them.  I will let you folks know if I have time to do this.

Cheers

Welcome to the forums, Taarnak!  If you get around to working a list out for these figs, let me know.  I'd like to post it.

Count Zero, are those VOR figs packaged 1 per blister?

To be honest, I am not sure. That is what it looks like since the spec ops guys were a box set.

All the Vor minis I have are left over from when I attempted to get into Vor right before it was canceled.

Thanks!

Re: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

I have a platoon of GZG 15mm NAC that I finally (two years of patiently awaiting final paint dabs and basing) got around to finishing. They still need transport, but they are ready to rock and roll.

Before I decide if I want to come up with completely unique stats, I was curious if anyone has looked at converting Stargrunt values to Defiance.

Not that I know of, but I'm happy to hear from folks who've tried. I've done a 40K stat conversion and tnjrp has done a Warzone stat conversion.

Re: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

Anybody worked up a Starship Troopers Bug list yet, or do I need to get cracking?  I've been fiddling with the magicsculpt, working on making body sections for a "centipede" bug to use all those spare legs you end up with from the Warrior sprues...

Re: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

Not me, although I must confess to toying with the idea while I was reading the SST book. Sorta weird I suppose, considering I haven't even actually tried the original rules yet :?

Anyways, I don't think it would be all that difficult to convert the bugs if you just blithely ditch the tunneling rules. MI wouldn't probably be too hard either, in fact possibly even easier.

Re: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

In the new SST game, how varied is the bug army list?

Re: What Army are you working on and where are you getting minis

Let's see:

Warriors:  melee fighters with tunnel capability

Blister Bugs, Blaster Bugs, Firefries:  shooty types with minor variations in range and power, but slightly more fragile than Warriors and can't tunnel

Hopper Bugs:  flying melee troops, *very* fast

Tanker Bugs:  big, slow, super-tough melee monsters the size of a tank, armed with very powerful acid spray and able to tunnel

Plasma Bugs:  really big, really slow walking plasma cannons, probably most useful for air defense

Brain Bugs:  expensive but give extra actions to other Bugs each turn, as well as having scary psychic powers, fairly tough to kill but big penalties if they do drop

I think that's everything so far.  I can see how to adapt most of this stuff to Defiance easily enough, but I'm a little reluctant to just skip the tunnel rules altogether, since it's (for me, at least) a big chunk of the Bug's flavor.  Might be able to simulate a lot of it with the Covert Ops rules, though...have to reread that section first.

OTOH, I might just say the heck with it and just do the Bugs as a random gribbly army, which would let me just play them as a Matrix/Organic swarm force, as well as letting me add my own weird scratchbuilds.  Have to do something with all those spare legs, I'll have 98 of them when I finish this latest batch...  smile
