Topic: Tractor Beams

I haven't got the rules worked out yet, but how about this:

Tractor Beam.

SU Requirement: 5% (affected by TL)
Cost: Hull x (MPs + 3) x 20% (?)

A ship with tractor beams has one TB for every hull point (so a hull 4 ship would have 4 TBs, a hull 12 would have 12 etc)

You'd also need rules for docking...:D

Interesting and would like to see them in Starmada, but what is your intended use for them in Starmada?
Drone/Fighter Defense? Towing and/or grappling with other ships to hold them in place?
  Is there a disadvantage to tractoring a ship. Such as it can easily target its captor and vice versa?
  1 per hull may be too many per ship depending on their purpose.
   If you could describe what it is they are too do, I think it would be easier to assign a cost and SU to them after that.

I think that there are already rules for towing, anyway. I'll have to get back to my rulebook just to be sure.

In our campaign, we have added Tractor Beams. No tactical use but it is nice to be able to bring a busted up ship home for some repairs. Our Tractors are a set SU cost not a % though.

I had a player demonstrate to me how to “game” Starmada and take advantage of the rules. I don't have the ship displays of what he used but it took advantage of the towing ( E8 ) rules to bring more SU (and attendant goodies) than an equivalent ComRat that I had designed.  Basically he crammed all of his engines into a smaller sized hull that then towed a larger, weapons laden hull. The designs below are a pale reflection of what happened to me.

With the Sled Dog towing the Slug above you get a good match for the Common class Frigate below. The above combo can move at speed 10 and is better armed but more susceptible to damage.

Note: My opponent used PDS as shields would not be cost effective used on ships this way. Next time I see something like this, I'll slam the little guy and leave his gun sled drifting in space.

Honestly, I commend the player for the design.  I've seen this sled/slug combo a couple of times in campaign games and it can be really good or really bad depending on the first couple of combat rounds.
