Topic: Anyone working on starfire conversions?

HI all Im new to these new rules. I was wondering if any old time starfire  players  frequent the boards. I have these old books and was wondering if any conversions exist to at least  have simmular fleet designs of the universe of starfire. I realise it too is a game that designs fleets but Im not trying to plug that. I just know alot of good lore  exists from the older books and would be interesting campaigns.

Re: Anyone working on starfire conversions?

Well I for one am a relatively recent convert from Starfire to Starmada. As late as mid-2005 we ran a 4th Generation starfire campaign but finally grew disenchanted with the direction Starfire was taking. We needed a simpiler strategic system and opted for VBAM. We wanted a different tactical system and are now playing Starmada. The All or nothing approach of Starfire wouldn't translate well to Starmada (in my opinion).
In Starfire, once you comit to battle, you win or lose 100%. If you are in a bad spot it is almost impossible to disengage. Plus in a campaign all of the battles were variations on a warp point assault/defense and it just became a game of throwing resources down one or two warp lines. Very little tactical maneuvers could alter that. In Starmada I can engage the Hyperdrive and I'm gone. Now it is more like naval combat in that to get the enemy to fight, I have to threaten something he doesn't want to lose. So far I prefer Statmada.
While I miss the detailed back story that came with Starfire, there is quite a bit of background to run very diverse campaigns using the VBAM/Starmada combo.

Re: Anyone working on starfire conversions?

I too came from Starfire (3rd edition though) and now use Starmada and VBAM.  You should be easily able to convert from Starfire designs to Starmada ones if you focus on recreating the *role* of the ship rather than trying to convert mechanics point for point.

And VBAM can pretty easily handle all the Starfire strategic stuff and background materials, even Akelda Dawn.  But I am not aware of any existing conversions already done up, sorry.

Re: Anyone working on starfire conversions?

I used to play Starfire heavily in the 80's & 90's.  My friends and I would try to our-design each other.  When I discovered Full Thrust and then Starmada, the same attempts at out-designing continued...  I have several designs that have expendible weapons.  I label these as External Ordinance Racks.
I imagine that to design a Force Beam in Starmada would be fairly easy.  Energy beams would half shields to simulate their ignoring Armor in Starfire.  As for primary beams, who knows!  <LOL>.
You could make range 18 weapons that do 3 damage and call them Capital Missiles with AM warheads, and some with 2 damage and call them standard missiles with AM warheads...

I enjoy games that allow you to make your own units.  I find Starmada to be even more fun than Starfire was because you can even design your own weapons.  I still play weekly in OrangePark, near Jacksonville, and sometimes with friends down in St Augustine.
