I'd love to do up some space ships minis, but I lack basic artistic talent required to design the damn things.

also, that and my wife won't let me spend that kind of money just so I can have some neat spaceships.

I love that review, it's good to see how a fleet, well-put together, can also have a "flavor" and NOT need to have every ship be perfectly design to destroy the enemy.

(I'm off the soapbox now)

at any rate, I think there is a place for discussion like this, I'm not sure it has it's own forum, but I think this a very good example of a good review.

thing is, I didn't want the basin to be the place where Mike babbles about star trek and I get on my soap box about the "current state of gaming"

but I think it's a great idea to talk about the "design philosophies" of the ships

It could be done in the background blurb, which I encourage...

btw, I have used the Bourbaki Basin designs in actual games also.

You know, i have both games, Glen and the difference isn't as much as you would think. I started playing SFB with the original Pocket Edition in '80 and played continuously until '95 or '96.

of course that was 6 games

there is no reason to think that just because you can't see a ship that it can't be damaged is there?

I'm leaning more and more to the stouts these days, but Guinness is my true love.

I don't care what anyone says about it, nowadays it's everywhere and it's always the same creamy goodness.

perhaps I should explain a little better,

the onager was roman for kicking ass smile

we used nothing but twine and 5/8" dowels to make it.

we designed it using a picture of an onager found on the internet.

it was our first siege engine.

Ben is 13.

a catapult is anything that throws stuff, a trebuchet is a heavyweight with an arm and very difficult to use, I built one out of cardstock and use it at work, I'll take a picture of it and post.

That's it I think, the cat bath video is funny if you can hear me saying ow as the cat digs his claws into my back and arms.

um, I like cheese.

Ben and I built an Onager today...our first siege machine!

All told, took about 6 hours from start to finish, look at the video

It's not always about cost vs effectiveness, sometimes the flavor of a fleet is more important. Not EVERYONE builds 3500 pt monstrosities big_smile

In a campaign situation, you can always say that hyperdrives are only available to ships that have size 10 hull or above, or you can't make more than 5 lt yr jumps with ships smaller than 5 hull.

or the cost of a hyperjump could be built into the campaign system.

or any of a hundred different reasons to force the tender/rider conept.

well done rafial

The best fun I had was playing in a tournament.  if everyone tries to make things interesting, instead of gigantic ships of death,  then interesting it will be.

The problem with DOGA, and it's a serious one, is that it doesn't produce what they call water-tight models.  Purty pictures it works for but it's not for those who want to make minis.

Blender's latest incarnation is a beauty, the interface is so easy to use it practically models itself.

but use whatever you want.

Yeah, sounds like the one thing that we all agree on is that having an "official" Star Trek universe for Starmada fans to play in is a good thing.

Kudos to the suits--you made more sales (I know *I'll* be investing in minis) and the fans happy at the same time.

Oh, and just in time for the new JJ Abrams Trek movie.

Shrewd.

Whah what suits:)

two units could remain in Melee for a whole game without actually doing anything if neither side pays any command points after the first contact

That is correct. they essentially sit still.

Check out the imperial starmada sourcebook for the correct notation, this is not right according to that source book.

I'll update and build a new one as soon as I get a few moments of free time.
