Hexes? Sold.

Is this a miniatures game? A hex-based game?

Yes and no. I have added some more features but I have been toying with adding new fleet designs and stalled there. I hope to finish up a beta version over the next couple of weeks that I can put out there for people to look at and comment on.

I also have mostly compiled a document with suggestions on playing PBEM (how to signify damage, how to assign targets, etc.) with an eye both to using the Vassal version fully and speeding up email play.

I see I never contacted the Dugan about images...

It's definitely doable. I have been tinkering with rules for just such a game - VBAM with Dreadnoughts. Sadly, my time is not my own and they will likely never see the light of day.  sad

There are numerous challenges for the VBAM combat system but if you are using Starmada for the battles, then you have solved many of the issues.

The other matter is, of course, that it took many years to build most dreadnoughts (although, somehow, the Brits managed to build Dreadnought herself in a matter of months!). This creates a strange dynamic not found in most VBAM settings where, with optional rules, the largest capital ships might take as much as a year to build -- but not 4-6 years!

I wouldn't come within 30 hexes of that place.

Just kidding!  lol

Looking good. Is that window visible to all players, or just the owner? We'll have to decide on a method of indicating damage to weapons engines etc.

I am going to make it so the window can be masked. That means only the player who "owns" the piece can see it. But it will be an option for those who prefer to play with open books.

Yes, there would have to be some agreement for marking damage on the sheet in a uniform way. Unfortunately, I think this text sheet is the easiest way to get ship info into a vassal game. There are other ways but they would be kludgy and time-consuming, even if the end result would be prettier and more intuitive.

I cannot wait to absorb this. I came to Starmada after purchasing Grand Fleets.   8)  Interesting idea.

Now I have to create a vassal mod for this...

It's funny but I thought his discussion was just a suggestion for some kind of option. Some people have responded vehemently to this idea. People don't like their freedom being taken away!

I think it would be a nice option for people to have to organize player-designed fleets. Most miniatures games have some kind of rule, or at least suggestions, about army composition. Why shouldn't Starmada? (aside from the standard no more than half the points in one ship)

It shouldn't, and really can't, be forced on anyone, though. (Like the range 30 discussion -- it's an optional rule that absolutely should exist but if you want to play with it, being an option, you should seek out other people who want to play with that option. Likewise, if you don't want to play with an option then no one can force you to.)

Still working on the update to Vassal... Here's a quick image showing how each ship has a property page for putting in stats and tracking damage. The stats were pasted directly from Shipyard v5.

I don't know why the image isn't showing anymore. It's here if anyone wants to see it: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/mj1 … %20Online/

Declaring all fire simultaneously, rather than ship-by-ship, would be a reasonable speedup for PBEM.

Oh, I had thought of that earlier. I think that is an excellent way to go.

Yes, I think the same ships available but I thought of giving some leeway for choosing fleets. Maybe mirrored forces is better, though.

I'm working on a few changes to the Vassal mod for Starmada and have begun thinking about how to set up a PBEM/Online tournament once it is completed.

As I began to contemplate it, I realized that I will have to choose which optional rules will be in effect, as well as scenarios, available ships, etc. I'd like player reactions to a some initial thoughts on the matter. The first decision is the most crucial one, I think, as it may determine which optional rules to use.

First, my philosophy on tournament #1 -- for beginning players but hopefully fun for the experienced players. For this reason, some optional rules will be in effect but probably not many.

Okay, the first decision is about ships -- should this be open to player-built ships? Right now, as this is for beginners as well as for old hands, I think the answer should be no. Assuming the first is a moderate success, I think a later tournament should certainly allow for player-built ships. But initially, I would like to see a level-playing field where beginners just have to master the rules of play but not master the complexities of design and anticipating their opponents' designs.

My thought is to use the ships provided with the main rulebook (there are 8 in the "stuff" download). Or, I might work with someone to design a set of generic ships to make available.

Decision two is whether to assign set scenarios or allow players to build their fleets based on whatever ships are available for the tournament. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I think an optional rule for players interested in more balanced, "realistic" scenarios would be excellent. You might even want to make it fleet-specific, as you have done here, for the official fleets and then some general ruling for scratch-built fleets. Perhaps based on hull size?

So, in a 1000 point scenario, purchasing is made in a certain order.
Purchasing two tier 3 escorts, allows the purchase of one tier two cruiser-sized vessel. Purchasing two tier 2 vessels allows the purchase of one tier 1 capital ship. Of course, this doesn't prevent a player from purchasing 8 tier 3, 2 tier 2, 1 tier 1 and having a swarm of escorts.

This will eventually lead to a PBEM tournament rules thread...

I think it makes sense. There is historical precedence as ship and fleet commanders were often given orders to "preserve their ships". As a result, ships often retreated (or attempted to!) from battle after receiving critical damage or suffering fires.

I think calling it "morale" makes sense, although it should be explained to the gaming community as representing the level of a commander's willingness to sacrifice ships in the face of orders to preserve his command.

And, of course, some captains ignored such orders and pressed the attack anyway!

The only solution to ships having {r=30hx} weapons is Not to build ships armed the same way. Instead, try to be more creative and find solutions,

Well, and this is what prompted my question which started this hullabaloo. Is the only way to match 30-range weapons with more 30-range weapons? Dan gave some good suggestions.

Beowulf, what sort of escorts do you field? With 1101 CR battleships, you have at least 1101 points worth of other ships. Or, do you allow 1-ship fleets in your gaming group?

Range 6 = 21
Range 9 = 45
Range 12 = 78
Range 15 = 120
Range 18 = 171
Range 24 = 300
Range 30 = 465

This is the part, as a wannabe mathematician, that scares me. Range 30 weapons threaten such a huge area with even a small arc that they are dramatically more powerful than even a range 18 weapon.

But again, I lack the experience to say that range 30 weapons are the dominant paradigm without equal and without challengers. But given my small experience of a couple of solo battles, it seems like a fast ship would lose engine and effectiveness before it had a chance to truly close the distance.

(91 replies, posted in Starmada)

Oh, okay. Well, does it play out differently then? Can ships with shorter ranges close the distance and make the super-long range design pay for its exesses?  smile

Good idea, Bren.

When I see conversations like this I wonder if there isn't something wrong with Starmada that there is no tradeoff* for having longer ranges. Having very long ranges actually is rewarded to the extent that with longer ranges, there is no hit penalty at mid-ranges that might be your opponents' long range (i.e., a weapon with range 30 has no penalty firing out to 20 hexes while a weapon with range 21 has a penalty from range 15).

But I don't have enough experience with Starmada to truly judge. Is there anyone willing to stand up and say their designs, with more moderate weapon ranges, can defeat a fleet designed around range 30 weapons? Everyone seems to assert simply that range 30 is the way to go.

* Rather, the tradeoff is not great enough in terms of SUs, I guess.

Damn you, OldnGrey!

I downloaded the latest Open Office (it didn't work correctly with my old, rickety 1.1.5 Open Office) and just wasted an hour toying with ship designs. Shipyard makes it too easy!  lol

Thanks for all your work!

p.s. If I spot small issues would you like me to email them to you? Or post them here?

Yes, I used to be a Cyberboard guy but Vassal has some key functions that Cyberboard does not. I've used it to play a small handful of games and find a well-made module very easy to use for solo or PBEM play.

I actually played a solo game of Starmada AE on Vassal the other day. Two Swiftsure DDs against a Victory CA. The CA rolled terribly the first 3 turns and still managed to maul one of the Swiftsures but in the meantime was pretty severely damaged (half its hull was gone). In the last (fourth!) turn it faced an undamaged Swiftsure and... drum roll ... "sank" it. Of course, the CA had 1 hull left and only two weapons. Fun!

I am trying to use the Shipyard (4c) but it is not calculating SU used or SU remaining and it is also not calculating CR. Is this to-be-implemented or did I do something wrong?

I am simply opening the sheet and looking at the sample Victory Class Heavy Cruiser.

Thanks
