I don't think you can give a weapon the same trait more than once (thinks of a weapon with double continuing damage).

I was referring to Non-Piercing [X] (-1, -2, -3) from p.14 of the Starmada Iron Stars supplement.

Reading the description of mine clearing in the core rulebook it says (paraphrase) that weapons firing at mines get a -1 penalty like weapons firing at fighters. Do weapon traits (namely no hull dmg and non-piercing) that cause a negative to hit against fighters  also increase the penalty for shooting at mine patterns? I was designing a "mine clearing" weapon system that I wanted to have little or no use against warships and fighters and wanted to give it non-piercing -3, but I wanted to make sure it was still useful against mines, and I didn't see anything explicit on the subject. Thanks.

With falstaffe out, we have replaced games 2 and 4 with a new game 2. The other three games are now complete and mostly have been for some time. Hopefully, we can get the last game done quickly and move one.

[list][*]Game1 Blacklancer99 (Empire) score? vs. Inari7 (Hegemony) score?
[*]Game2 jygro (Empire) vs. Blacklancer 99 (Hegemony)
[*]Game3 Inari7 (Empire) 178 vs. RobinStirzaker (Hegemony) 7
[*]Game4 RobinStirzaker (Empire) 184 vs. jygro (Hegemony) 121

Blacklancer is going to figure out the score for Game1 (using the 50% mark) so I will update soon.

I guess if you're betting people, the odds are on the Empire winning the last one...

I sent the setup for the replacement game tonight, so hopefully we can zip through it this week. Thanks for the vote of confidence  wink  I'm pretty much just hoping to get some points! E

I know I've been distracted lately, but is it quiet around here, or what?

I read Silent Wind of Doom and thought this thread was going to be about some new playtest ship...or what happens about an hour after Taco Bell...

I come here every day, but I haven't had a lot to say, so I guess I'm part of the problem.

I think in the nicer weather people generally spend less time sitting around writing 10 page posts about how they would represent ablative shields or whatever. I know I do. At least the weather has been nice here for a whole 24 hours...but as this "Summer" has gone, I won't expect it to last.
Oh, and I'll have more to say once we get our grubby paws on Klingon Armada!  wink

Why not get bigger anyway? More room to maneuver, reasons to have larger weapon ranges, etc.

You have to be careful -- if weapon ranges get too long in comparison to engine values, the game becomes less tactical.

Here, here. Some of the "best/most fun" games I have personally played were with very low range weapons and relatively high engine ratings. More like dogfights than naval battles in some respects, but fits well with the feel of space battles.

As a dyed-in-the-wool "pointilist" (?) I'm not sure how I feel about the sarcasm implicit in this bit from a post on The Miniatures Page, but I thought it was funny nonetheless:

"On a recent thread about the Battle of Trafalgar (and the rules "Trafalgar") it seemed obvious that to accurately simulate the Battle players would need to know how many points worth of ships Nelson had relative to his opponents. I've read a fair number of primary sources on the Battle, but have yet to come across Nelson's point list."

perhaps Nelson's point list got left in the basement after the battle; did anyone look in the rubbermaid tub holding his fleet? Maybe he accidentally threw out the list because it was so covered by smudged fingerprints of Cheetoh residue as to be unrecognizable.  wink

Another Vassal question.

On one of my vassal games the range stick is not working.

The the other game it works perfect.

any ideas?

Is it not working at all, or is it picking up your ships and moving them as you try to move the line? If it is the latter, that happened in one of my games with MadSeason and it went away the next time I restarted Vassal. I've found at some times it acts a little weird and gives some crazy results, and then all of a sudden it will work fine.

Could the gaming universe survive without weed? I suppose as long as there are still Doritos

Click the small black button labeled "mov" at the far right of the vassal controls and all of the white lines should disappear.

Somehow, when I copied the ship designs for the tournament I cut off the "rules" that Madseason posted at the top of the post. I was operating with the first post of the topic in mind for some reason. I apologize to both of my opponents again for the mix up and the delay it has caused. I couldn't log any computer time last night so it will be tonight at the earliest before I can correct my setups and resend them.
Sorry again for holding things up.

I didn't get to finish the email I wanted to write today. I will get it out tomorrow for everyone.

What everyone can do ahead of time, as I mentioned, is determine the composition of their two fleets and determine starting locations for them. Erik (aka Blacklancer99) is a veteran Vassal user, so his opponents can lean on him a bit to show them the ropes.

Does anyone have any questions they want me to address?

Veteran eh? I guess 2 games grants me veteran status...after the tourney I suppose I will be a Grizzled Veteran!  wink
Truth is the Vassal interface simplifies things so much that I find that I have to slow down so that I don't miss steps (like last turns screens allocation for half my squadron!). I did miss getting to roll a sack of dice when I popped those CRM Batteries  :geek:
During  the game I keep a printout of the turn sequence stuff from the rulebook on the desk in front of me and I scribble all my orders on a memo pad before typing them in, that way I can cross each item off as I go and it's easier to keep track of everything.
Now I'm off to do what will probably be the final turn of our ongoing game  sad

My fleets are all ready to go, and since Madseason and I seem to be wrapping up our current game (soon) I'm itchin' to start the tourney. I'll probably get my a** handed to me, but it's still better to play than not  lol

Erik
PS a warning to new Vassal users, the dice roller seems to have an unholy affinity for 1's...except for when you want them. It is an evil, evil thing

Geez, even Baseball is getting complicated....

I'd rather watch Little League, more fun - or the local "farm team" - a LOT cheaper to get into the bleachers....

Tell me about it, "Friendly Fenway" where the Red Sox play is the most expensive ticket outside of the new Yankee Stadium, and once you pay the gas station owner your firstborn to park 6 blocks from the park...well you get the picture.
I stopped going to games when the worst seats in the park went over $20 a pop and I haven't been back since. I'd rather watch the games on TV anyway (they show replays, the food's cheaper, I never have to worry about parking, if it rains I stay dry and can watch something else and when they suck I can change the channel as well). I'll pay to go to a Worcester Tornadoes game (the local independent minor league baseball team) before  would take free tickets to Boston because of all of the hassles involved. Ken Burns can keep the atmosphere, I like money in my wallet and simplicity.  wink

Another baseball question:

(sure, this thread is two years old, but what the hell)

When the score comes up, with the three different numbers, what does the third one mean? I know the first is the number of runs scored, the second is the number of hits recorded, but what is the third number?

In a baseball game's line score the third number represents errors committed by that team.

Have you tried using Open Office? Listed as running on an Apple Mac as well as windows PCs and the latest version should run the builder without problem.
You can find it at OpenOffice.org and it is a bit cheaper then Mac Office, $0.00 (free).

The latest version I tried of open office gave my Mac fits (mostly very odd random copying and bizarro formating problems) but works fine on my wife's windows laptop.
My wife convinced me to buy a Mac...which I'm paying for...and she hogs it most of the time while I huddle in the corner with the old laptop...from what I hear I have a fairly typical marriage  lol

I will second the update response. Absolutely everything was wonky when I first got office for my Mac, but after installing the updates everything (seems) to run fine. You may have to tweak a few preferences as well as for some reason Excel in particular has the most annoyances as the defaults.

ah, I was just trying to show that what ever you come up with to simulate a star trek type of shield rule, that people will naturally want to expand it to "other" Star Trek era ships. So, whatever rule comes up, I was trying to say that it had to be able to be "universal."
I guess once I see the 'offical playtest rules' I can understand the proposed concept better.

with the proposed rule, is it per volley, per attack, per Captains yelling...

Just wondering, has anyone proposed lowering the shield rating by the number of IMP dice that it stops in that facing?  Don't reduce the shield rating track as if it were damage, just the facet. That would seem to give it the feel that the shield was hit by something and reduced, but not technically damaged. Maybe each turn the shield could regenerate 1 point of facet (total for the entire ship not each facet) not to exceed the total shield rating available on the track (to add actual damage to the equation). That would seem to give the feel of Trek shields that reduce as they are struck, and damage does seem to penetrate all the time on screen, even while the shields still have XYZ precent remaining. It may not be a port from SFB but it should give the "feel" of Trek. It would probably necessitate re-costing shields, and could theoretically make ratings of greater than 5 not outrageous ("Shields 7 eh? Well we'll just whittle those down a bit with phaser fire before we go in for the kill")
Just thinking out loud...er...in type.

Just a quick question, I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere, but will KA have any new rules at all, or is it purely a "setting" sourcebook utilizing only existing SAE rules?
Thanks,
