It was built specifically for the Nova Rulebook, so yes, it is up to date.
And cricket, really? How is that done?
Uh... how is WHAT done?
OK; I was at first discouraged by the fact that you only take PayPal, but then discovered that I had $13 in paypal from a mysterious source, so it's a moot point now...
FWIW, you don't need a PayPal account...
Will those of us who purchased now be able to download any updates?
Yes.
Hooray! Any idea when the pdf will hit rpgnow and other distributors?
Soon.
EDIT: I do not expect to provide the file to other distributors until after the hard copies have shipped, but you can get the "pre-release" PDF from the MJ12 web site: http://www.mj12games.com/starmada/mjg0130.html
Spring is in the air... birds are chirping, bees are buzzing, and the Starmada Nova Rulebook is available for pre-orders!
Starmada is a miniatures board game of starship combat. At its most basic level, players take command of mighty fleets in a general attempt to reduce each other to just so much space junk. At its most advanced, the game can be customized to breathe life into any science fiction background that players might imagine.
The Nova Rulebook represents a new beginning for The Universal Game of Starship Combat. While in some ways this new edition is notably different from previous incarnations of the game, at its core Starmada remains the game players around the world have grown to know and love. As always, the guiding principle has been ''simple, but not simplistic''. Within this book, players will find:
* Streamlined inertial movement, with optional movement systems to encompass a wide range of settings;
* An intuitive combat system, including three distinct and layered types of starship defenses; and
* The most comprehensive set of starship construction rules available in any game currently available!
Dozens of stand-alone options and advanced rules are provided, from which you may pick and choose to fit your desired level of complexity and create the type of game YOU want to play.
Pre-order customers will receive a download link for a ''beta'' release of the rulebook in PDF format. Once hard copies ship in early April, pre-order customers will receive an updated electronic copy as well.
Did the baby come out and change "The Plan"?
I did say "a week or so".
Actually, the rules are DONE. Just putting the final touches on...
I come back after having thought about armor. I thought it was a mean of protection that could be decided as you want, and not simply a translation of SAE armor plating, which will always lend to a fixed number of armor boxes, depending of the hull size. Too bad, I was envisionning some use of variable armor in order to translate starfire designs...
A ship can have anywhere from 1 to 100 boxes of armor, so long as it has enough space units.
If we only wish to purchase the PDF?
The PDF will be available at the time pre-orders are announced.
Okay -- so if you've been paying attention, you know the new edition of Starmada is about six weeks overdue. I apologize for that, and I hope the wait will have been worth it. Besides, it was unavoidable, what with the new job, new house, and new baby on the way (OMG).
In the next week or so, pre-orders will begin for the hardcopy of Starmada: Nova Rulebook. Pre-order customers will immediately receive a PDF copy as well. In April, hard copies will ship to pre-order customers and retail stores.
How does this impact the Star Fleet Armada books?
Starting in June, an updated version of Klingon Armada will be released, followed in short order by updated versions of Romulan, Alien, and Distant Armadas. Battleship Armada will be released in both Admiralty and Nova versions.
For those of you who own the existing SFU books, there are some options if you are reluctant to buy the updated versions:
First, a short and easy-to-use update document will be available for free, allowing you to convert the Admiralty designs to their Nova versions. It will also include the relevant SFU rules so that, when combined with the basic Nova rules (also available for free) you will have everything you need to be up-to-date.
Second, if you can wait until they've all been updated, a PDF will be made available with all the ships from the first four SFU books (Klingon, Romulan, Alien, Distant) for one very reasonable price.
Aside the SAE value which change to obtain the same SNE shield value (screens are better than facet, for example), will there be a difference between them (SAE shield, screen and facet) or will they be treated exactly the same?
Ah, I get it.
Faceted shields are being replaced by a new trait called "directional defenses".
Screens are not currently supported in the new rules, but could be.
So my question to Dan: Is it possible to release a special pdf where each single optional rule chapter is layouted on a seperate page? So one can buy the "classic-one-sausage" version and/or such a segmented special version? Or has someone an idea for another solution for this (admittedly rather small) problem?
Possible?
Yes.
I suppose if there were enough call for such a thing, I could include a version of the book formatted this way...
I would miss pivots, but not their complicated method of computation. I would miss overthrusters, or any other mean to represent agile ships, which exists in SFO.
One of the biggest struggles I have is how to define "agile" in terms of spaceships. What does it mean to be "more agile"?
I would argue that, when using an inertial/vector-based movement system, there is no such thing. Your ability to accelerate/decelerate is inherently tied to your ability to change course (since changing course simply means accelerating in a different direction).
The "problem" I had found with overthrusters is they only applied if you were using a specific optional rule (pivots) and NOT another (non-inertial movement).
If people have suggestions for how to simulate "agility", I'm listening...
On the other hand, aside the method of conversion, I fail to see a difference between the three types of shield.
Not sure I understand... ?
It seems that overthrusters have disapeared. Had they been replaced by something else?
They have been removed -- at least from the core rules. See below.
Btw, about pivot, which are related to OVT, i've read that they simulated the ability to move in a direction different to the ship's front. So, why should it have to pay for pivot each turn?
it should pay once and keep the pivot freely as long as it doesn't pay to modify it. Either one direction or the other.
This is true, so long as the ship doesn't change its velocity or direction of travel, which would require it to pivot accordingly, and then "re"-pivot back to the desired facing.
I have removed the "pivot" option for now, because I thought it was inelegant. I am open to suggestions.
All you need to do now is to come up with a negative ship trait where they have a penalty to the damage threshold rolls
Did I forget to mention the "fragile systems" ship trait? My bad...
I don't pretend to know whether one movement system would be "better" than another. All I will say officially is that the intent is for both sides to use the same system in any given game. If your group gets good results allowing one side to use solar and the other normal movement, I'd love to hear about it.
The intent was to have ships be 60* off the direction of the wind to achieve optimal speeds. I have corrected this in the rules.
I can't see why a game would be inherently unbalanced if different sides used different movement systems.
There are... plans...
is there likely to be naval movement, and could you combine the solar and naval movement to allow for naval battles in the age of sail?
Yes and yes.
I noticed that under Stealth it says that it gives a ship Stealth (3). Is this correct and does this mean that there are "levels" of Stealth?
Yes.
Cool, solar wind movement. Did I perchance give you the inspiration for that Dan?
Actually, it was the Eldar minis that did it...
Almost there...
Is it possible? Probably.
Can I do it? That's another question entirely...
I would, except once the topic is posted, the title can't be changed.
