Cool, I’ll need to go pick up the new fleet set soon; thanks for the heads up! I’m almost ready for a game with them Vs my UNSC fleet (most of which sat for years in bare metal and I’m just not getting around to finishing them).

If differing fighter types, I'll use the same color palette, but the markings would be different. What you're proposing sounds totally reasonable IMO.

ed: Looking back at my Yomi files, I did originally have a missile fighter. I just never updated the design with the newer general fighter. 'spose I should do that soon. (wry chuckle)  Any other fighter types I should consider while I'm at it? lol

Generally, so long as a fleet has one lighter and one heavier fighter type I can make it work with no fuss, but even if they only have a single type it is rarely an issue to be honest. However for aesthetics only it tends to look best if the fleet has fighters in two sizes. If the fleet has dozens of fighter craft I may go crazy trying to fit them all into my fleet list but that’s just my inner completionist at work…

As far as I can recall, it isn’t actually required for any of the games I’ve played before, but it’s been a fairly common houserule in some groups I played with so it became a bit of a habit. An additional advantage I’ve found is when I’m playing games with two or more carriers with  varied fighter load outs as I don’t need to track which types of fighters a particular carrier has already launched. I like to be able to be able to use my ships in multiple game systems (even if I rarely actually play) and some systems you may not be able to launch all wings at the same time. So if both my fleet and escort carrier have mixed bomber and interceptor wings and launch different craft types I can just look to the side to see which one still has bombers in reserve.

Hey I was finishing up my (very long overdue) UNSC fleet while waiting for my Yomi prints to finish up and realized I need to order more fighter craft. This led me to wondering what most players do to differentiate their different squadrons. So just a quick question to see what is more popular:

Painting all fighters in the fleet the same way and using tokens to mark the ship, type/mod
Painting a single style/scheme per type of fighter and using tokens to mark their ship
Painting a different scheme for each wing and using tokens like they’re all the same
Painting a single scheme per ship and using tokens to mark their type.

The UNSC fleet has two different models for fighter craft while the Yomi has only one. I’m thinking about using different schemes (and quantities) to differentiate the fighter types and then using a marker to signify their carrier. But wanted to check what is the most common means of handling it.

Idk what I’m doing wrong, linked the photos from Pinterest but they don’t show up and I just get white boxes. Anyways, fleet is mostly done. Not crazy about the white still so I ordered some creams and grays to go over it and try to make a smoother coat. Think I might hit the reds again too now that I’ve had two days to look at them, bring it back down one layer and just use the last color as an edge highlight. Not the best paint job I’ve done but these are my only my second paint project since Aug ‘20 and the last project was Sept ‘21.

Ok, let’s see if I’ve figured out this photo thing this time… I still need to print the bases, some more escorts and cruisers, and get the fresh prints plus fighters painted but they’re ready for a family photo at least.

Started working on these beauties yesterday and just wanted to share what a nearly finished ship looks like. They’re downloaded from Cults3D and are probably one of my favorite fleet designs to date. The center ship in the photo is about 90% complete, while the ship on the left represents the majority of the fleet with only the base layers down. The ship on the right was my test scheme to see what I’d like. It was primed in white originally (because I hate painting white) but I like the stronger contrast from the base metallic over black primer better.

The nearly finished ship in the center needs the barrels painted on the guns. I’ll do these either in a bright silver or (more likely) a dark metallic black. On top of the four twin barrel guns there is a small strip that’s currently white which I need to color as well. Just haven’t decided what color to make this yet. Using the same red would be the safest but think I’d rather something bright which will pop more. Maybe a bright green or blue (the gold is a cold gold with lots of green and blue tones to it).

If anyone has an idea/suggestion for that little white strip feel free to comment and I’ll post a photo of the finished fleet when they’re ready for action. While I’m thinking about it, got a question for those of you who paint your ships. Do you paint the undersides of your vessels? I do, but tend to not paint as many layers or coats as the sides and top. Recently a couple guys at the local shop told me they don’t both to paint the undersides of most of their ships. They’ll get the primary base color down (often with their primer spray) and then they might dry brush it but that’s about it. Am I in the minority by putting the effort in to paint the undersides? If I use three layers of paint with two coats per layer on the top  I may just do two layers with one coat each on the bottom. So the colors are there but darker and less vibrant generally.

If I was putting them in order I’d like to see them covered.? UNSC, Japanese, Islamic Federation, Crusties, Fleet Book 2 (Phalons? being the lowest priority for me personally) aliens. Then several of the other human powers I’m probably forgetting would probably go after the Kra’vak, some after the Sa’vasku, with only a few being lower than the Phalons.

Also, I did find and redownload the book but the weird thing was when I searched for it with OneBookShelf’s search bar or go to your publisher page it didn’t show up in either list. However doing a Google search (or clicking on the link you posted both) brings it up.

Ok, so two questions: first I’m still wondering about how far down the pipeline the other FT factions will be. But second question is why does the Starmada:FT book no longer show up on OneBookShelf webstore???

Ok… three questions I guess… which FT factions are projected to be covered in the next book if it’s still a planned project? I’m hoping the UNSC see some coverage soon but all of the factions eventually.

I remember reading before about plans to cover the alien fleets from Fleet Boom 2 and possibly some of the other human powers (in particular the UNSC). Is this something still in the works and if so how far down the cue is it? As I understand it the game's designer does this as a side project/job so I can understand it being a while before it comes to light if it is still in his plans.

Thanks for the reply, hadn't checked this forum in ages since it didn't seem to get much traffic. That's the sort of information I was looking for and if you're the same guy as the designer on Cults3D some of your ships are the ones I'm playing with now. Love the Yomi fleet's design.

Yeah, in order to keep it simpler I think I might just limit it to aft/fore divisions and stick one of the side arcs with the same values. I'm more worried about getting the function down in play vs saving a few SU to use somewhere else (taking hits and losing shields costs you half your coverage instead of only a quarter). It may make the ships ever so slightly weaker or stronger but I don't think it should be enough to hamper play. As for screens (in universe armor) I'm thinking I'll leave it as either composite or quarters only. I don't see a reason to have armor working in the same manner. Now I really need to break down and start doing some math to get the fleets designed. I never got an answer on the dry dock question so I'll be hand designing all of the ships it seems.

Had an idea and wanted to see where it could go; was thinking about a fleet set up where smaller escort sized ships use standard shield rules, and larger capital sized ships used the directional shield plug in rules. For midsized cruisers I wanted directional shields but with them only having two sectors (fore/aft or port/starboard). How could I figure this within the rules framework? Easiest idea I had was to figure it as standard direction shields with fore and aft values but have not checked if that works yet. I have no idea if it would unbalance the game, this may be something someone's considered before and discarded as broken. Any advice or input would be appreciated.

In the Full Thrust setting book you've used a modified formula to calculate total space units for construction. Where would I go within the spreadsheet to change that formula so I can build some modified ships for the setting? I know you mentioned the change is approximately the same as having a -1 tech level in all fields but I'd like to give some of the nations slightly different tech levels as well so don't want to just use that to create their base level. I also want to tweak it slightly to create some aliens species with higher overall tech levels; some aliens will use the base/core formula and some will use another modified one (something that gives them about a +1 or +0.5 all areas, but haven't done the math yet to determine what that factor would be).
As a side note I'm using the version of the spreadsheet designed for open office. Note sure if that's relevant to my question or not.
I also noticed while browsing these forums you mentioned you plan to cover the aliens from Fleetbook 2 down the road as well; are you also planning to eventually cover any of the other ranges of models GZG produces such as UNSC or the minor powers? I'm currently considering using a simple system for generating the layered armors some of the aliens use by saying total armor/screens costs is equal to +1 point of armor per additional layer (so three layers of armor with 5, 4, and 3 points would be the same price as 15 standard points). Simi-Lancing weapons count each layer individually for dividing armor (so the above example would divide 1/4 of the damage to rolls and each layer of armor). Lancing weapons would bypass the first layer as in the rules annex then each deeper layer soaks one additional point compared to the previous layer (so 2-1-0 damage is absorbed by each layer in the above example). If you already have better ideas for how layered armor should work I'd gladly listen.

Hey all,
I'm working on my 3D printable flight stands and need some input; what would be the smallest size magnets that have the necessary strength hold various sized ships? This question is specifically aimed at the various sizes of metal ships from Brigade and GZG since my printed ships are easier to accommodate. I'm thinking about using a 1/16th by 1/32nd inch magnet on the escort sized ships; 1/8th by 1/16 for cruiser sizes, and either a 1/4th by 1/8th or 1/8th by 1/8th for the larger vessels. Some of the escorts are just too small for anything larger than a 1/8” surface and I'm making a mounting bracket to prevent spin which means I'll need to downsize the magnets.

Just remembered a third question, what size are the standard bases that come with GZG and Brigade Model's ships? I know the larger DN/SDNs from GZG come with a 50mm flight stand but what about the smaller ships? I'm working on making my own versions of flight stands to print and want to be in the same general range. I'm currently thinking 30 or 32mm for fights and escorts; 40mm for cruisers, 50mm for capitals, and possibly 60mm for the super capitals (DN and above). I *want* to say my older metal ships had 1” bases but haven't dug them out (read as: found) yet.

Greetings all,
I'm a long time gamer who's been away from space warfare for quite some time. Recently, I found some really nice ship models on Cults3D which prompted me to return to space combat; I'd planned on returning to Full Thrust, but after finding the Starmada: Full Thrust book online I've gone this direction instead (always loved the setting of the Tuffyverse but the flexibility of Starmada seemed more interesting). I've got a small fleetpack of UNSC, NAC, and a couple FSE (?) models gathering dust somewhere or another but I'm mostly going with the 3D printed ships this time around which leads me towards my first question (I had more but forgot them in the process of typing): What size physical fleets do most players tend to build/buy for their navies? For clarity I'm not asking about the points values you play with or what fleet distribution you use but the actual number and types of models you own. Once I finish printing up fleets I also intend to order some of the classic metal minis I love as well but not sure when to say "enough is enough"; I know I want to finish out the five FT major powers, one two of the lesser powers I always liked, as well as a few Brigade Models fleets that caught my eye recently (did not catch the name of the faction though).
A second question just came back to me: I found another crossover product of Starmada's on DriveThru for campaign play (Victory by Any Means) which looks like it was written for an older (obsolete?) edition of the rules. Were there any plans to bring this supplement up to the current edition of the game? If not how difficult would it be to covert myself (given effectively no knowledge of the applicable edition's rules)? I've created similar campaign style supplements in the past for other space combat games but would prefer to have something ready to move in than building the house myself.
