The Jovians pushed the Terrans out of the belt with maneuvering and concentrated fire!

Probably would have been a very different game if we had to endure one more turn of fighter attacks.  But 8 hours for 7 players is enough to call it a day!   big_smile

Thanks again for hosting Tim!

My Eldar ships had narrow front arcs in SAE.  I knew I was getting a super good deal from that.  I will take the more expensive front arc in Nova as a welcome challenge.

This was how my mum & dad parented.  Every time I asked again the punishment just cranked up a notch.   big_smile

Sounds good.  I haven't tried to find holes in it, but I do like it.

Now, Eldar also have superior fighters and bombers (and torps).  Got those too?  big_smile

I'm sure there's plenty of ways to build those the old-fashioned way.   8-)

Did I forget to mention the "fragile systems" ship trait? My bad... smile

Damn swanky!

Ok, well I posted well after everyone else had.  That's what I get for trying to make a fancy pic.  Thanks Dan for the correction!

With solar wind shouldn't you move fastest when you are traveling perpendicular to the direction of the wind?

Seconded.  I also play Eldar, so I was excited to see this.  I also play Age of Sail games AND I grew up sailing.   lol

I think this could be implemented in a way that is both more "realistic" (whatever that's worth in a space-faring game) and presents more tactical challenges.  Marauder's suggestion is good.  Sails are at their most efficient when reaching.  That can't be accurately modeled without resorting to a 12 point facing system.  But Wooden Ships and Iron Men did a decent job, using a four point system.  I suggest the same:

<IMG src="http://i43.tinypic.com/11l0cc6.png">http://i43.tinypic.com/11l0cc6.png</IMG>

So the broad reach is the fastest.  The close reach and running are slower.  And the no-go zone is slowest.

That said, even if you just went with the two point system, I think the bonus should be in effect on the broad reach, not while running.

Dan,
If you're considering making fighters the same as ships, why not open up some of the other aspects of fighters as well?
E.g. Range of weapons, fighters within fighters (missiles), ECM, stealth, etc.  I know I know...the math would be lovely.  smile

As far as the voting goes, I have an effect in mind that I would like to see.  I'll leave it in your good hands to determine how it's implemented.  I'd like to see escorts (i.e. small ships, not fighters) to have the ability to intercept seekers just by getting in their way.  Kinda like how escorts would take the hit from torps vs capital ships in WWII.

Speaking of torps, it would be cool to see fighters that can't be shot down at all...whatever description this may take.  Perhaps they fly "underwater" through subspace?  Again this may be redundant if fighters could have stealth, ecm, cloaked, etc.

Last request, I would love to see this trait (or something along these lines)....
Suppressable (*0.X): If the flight is targeted by a number of shots equal to half or more than the flight size, the flight cannot attack this turn, regardless of how many of the attacks actually destroy fighters in the flight.

I think that trait would go a long way to getting some value from investing in a little bit of anti-fighter tech.  Otherwise, taking a few flak type guns hardly seems worth it when the ships are getting overwhelmed by fighters.  It's also cool to imagine pilots screaming "There's too much fire!  I can't get a line in!"...before they fly back to base.

Finally, a word of caution.  Despite my obvious love of fighters, I worry that fighters are the one aspect of the core system that can be abused.  A mass of little ships is generally balanced against two huge capital ships.  But a mass of fighters?  I think it starts to become roshambo, depending on how much anti-fighter tech the capital ships have.  And so far you've done a really good job of avoiding roshambo.

I never tried to take a fleet of all independent fighters, but considering my group's collective love of the Starship-Exclusive trait, I think it would have raped the galaxy in our campaign.

I'm really looking forward to this!

I'm in Marauder's play group.  So while our time is very limited as he mentioned, we will be eagerly scrutinizing the new system.

This is one of the most enlightening discussions on game design I have read in a long time!

BS, your original post echoed the same feeling I'd had about the core mechanics.  But I couldn't accurately describe my position, so I didn't say anything.

Daniel, as much as it was a pain to defend your position, I applaud you for doing so.  In the end, you've convinced me that Starmada is solid.  smile  Also, your thoughts on the Acc pricing are very interesting.  I'm in Marauder's playgroup and some of us have gone to great lengths to break the system.  I suspect we'll be making some very slight modifications now.  So far we have not had to outright ban anything.  That says volumes about the balanced nature of the system!

I'm with Tim on this...super excited!
I can't code (well), but I do QA testing at work.  If you need a tester let me know!

What happens when seekers with the bomber trait are caught in a dogfight?  The interceptor gets to attack the seekers, but if they survive the attacks what happens?  The rules indicate seekers must attack their interceptors.  But bomber prevents them from doing so.  Do the seekers still self-destruct?  Or could the seekers be "liberated" by another flight of fighters that manage to take out the interceptors?

Cosworth, thanks for the PM.  I still can't PM respond (probably because I'm a newly registered user).  You can reach me at trent dot mccaffrey at gmail dot calm.  Looking forward to your response.

Daniel, the forum software is preventing me from sending a PM.  Neither the Compose function nor your Member profile allows me to send you a PM.  I used the Contact Us function on the website to send a message instead.

Thanks,

I'm 60% done with such a sheet and believe I can make it to 100%, but have concerns about sharing it as it contains non-free data from the rulebook. I have a hard time imagining anyone making sense of the army builder without the rules, but some might think otherwise.

What's the thoughts on that at mj12games or in the community in general?

Cosworth would you be willing to PM it to me?  I just picked up the PDF (still waiting for my download link!)
I've been working with a couple of the Starmada xls files and I'd like to give this a try too.  If you've got some of the work done then that would be a huge help.
