It's basically the same. The main difference is that Anti-Fighter Batteries are no longer active weapons and are applied as part of the Fighters' attack roll to speed things up. Their presence basically means that the Fighters can "fumble".

And finally the Shivans. They are the most elusive of the three races, with unkown motives and a pronounced lack of interest in communicating with anyone. They have apparently been around for thousands of years and seem to have access to vast resources (their first invasion fleet from the first game that almost wiped out the other two factions was apparently just a scouting party; the next invasion is worse).
Their actual physiology is also up for debate, though seeing how a human boarding party in the first war ran into a three-legged thing that shot laser beams from its eye, they appear to have a thing for cybernetics and/or power armor.

Their ship's weaponry is very similar to the other factions', with some slightly different weapons and a lack of slashing beams. They're also fond of missiles.

Due to their ships being very spiky with a black and red color scheme, they have been given rather demonic code names.

Decided to update the ships with Mdl beam weapons, which incidentally almost filled up all SUs of certain ships. I like it if things fall into place like this.

Next up are the Vasudans. They're hairless humanoids with very pronounced hip bones. They originally come from a desert planet and have a very complex, caste-based society that reminded the Terrans of Ancient Egypt, so much so that all the Terran code names for Vasudan vessels come from Egyptian mythology. The Vasudans just rolled with it after doing their own research on Ancient Egypt.

Vasudans have a rather small selection of ships, but they are aesthetically pleasing. They're also big into yellow and sand colors.

1) Going by p. 36, I'd say they do combine: Deadly causes additional damage, and then you check the Incapacitating trait to see which of the damage points actually stick.

2) This is not really spelled out, but I would assume it works like the Slow trait (p. 42): You don't have to make both modes Expendable, but firing the Expendable one will cause both modes to run out of ammo.

Hard to verify IMO since none of the FS2 beam weapons got a chance to be used against the Lucifer.

Though this does make sense in the context of crossovers: If they can't benefit from Shields, then nobody shall benefit lol

With the new edition around, I decided to finall do a project I've already considered since Admirality: A conversion of the ships found in FreeSpace 2, one of my favorite space combat PC games.

Story

FreeSpace 2 takes place in the 24th century, 32 years after the Great War, during which mankind and the alien Vasudans had to end their territorial war to fend off the Shivans, a mysterious invader with superior technology. The newly-formed alliance managed to defeat the aggressor, but not before the Shivans destroyed the Vasudan homeworld and forced the humans do destroy the only known hyperspace route to the Sol system.

The following decades have been peaceful for the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Aliance, rebel factions from both sides notwithstanding. Though it seemed that an old "friend" has come back...

Technology

The setting is quite primitive compared to others. Many capital ship weapons don't have a whole lot of range, and those that do tend to have a slow rate of fire. On the other hand everyone's very keen on turrent mounts, leading to good coverage.

The major drawback of the setting is that although energy shields are standard for fighters, they simply don't scale up effectively enough to be useful for capital ships. The only ship to ever have shields was the Lucifer, the Shivan flagship of the Great War, and that thing was more of a plot device because the shields made it invulnerable outside of hyperspace.

Fighters on the other hand are quite advanced. All of them are capable of entering hyperspace, and many missions are carried out at least a sector away from their carrier ship.

Fighter Types

FS2 is quite big on fighters, seeing how it's a game about piloting one. I might even make another conversion in the macro-scale.

Anyhow, most fighters in the game easily translate to one of the fighter variants, with the standard fighter generally labeled as a "Space Superiority Fighter".
Most "bombers" in the game however are closer to a Heavy Fighter, as they can take a lot more damage than any other type of fighter, and sometimes even come with mini-turrets to fend off fellow fighters.

A Note on Weapons

I had to condense some capital weapons into one type, as they didn't really end up looking too different when converting. I also used a different naming schemes, as none of the capital weapons have an in-universe name and use stuff like "Very Big Green Beam" in the game files.

Weapons of note are the Slashing Beam, which sweep over their target in a wide arc (with the side-effect of making it hard to predict how much damage the beam will actually do), and the Missiles, a catch-all term for various types of capital missiles. They are mainly used to intercept fighters, using a combination of small shockwaves and cluster missiles to catch their target.

A Note on Ships

As noted above, ships in this setting don't have Shields, and they don't qualify for Screens because weapons and other subystems are quite exposed on the hull. I gave them Ionized Hulls as a compensation.
I haven't settled on Technology Levels, but pretty much all ships I've done easily qualify for a -2 in weapon systems.

FreeSpace sports a few ship types which are either one-of-a-kind or only encountered in special situations. I'll safe them for a later post.

These are your typical humans in space. Their ships are quite boxy, and they're very fond of Greek names and the color blue.

Is a ship's DRAT rounded up before or after applying multiplicators? And if it's the former, how is the result rounded the second time around? The drydock appears to just take the whole result and round it normally.

A bit late of a response, but better than never. I'll try puzzling things together from my own understanding and this older thread here.

1. How do you resolve combat?

I think its "Roll your gun dice, every die that is equal to or greater than the target number scores 1 point of damage".

2. Do we use D6 dice?

3. How do we work with MP? You also use a term speed and MVT, although not sure if those terms mean the same thing.

MVT shows the minimum amount of points you have to spend to keep flying, as well as the maximum. Speed is the actual distance you've covered.

4. The quirk Decreased Turn is not really explained in the rules. I understand Camel used to turn to the right way better, but how do you imply it in the game?

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it improves your Turn Class by one for the direction in question.

5. How is the initiative resolved? The rules don't say, which may lead the reader to resolving it from the highest to the lowest number. I personally think i should be resolver from the lowest number, as going the second is an advantage in aircombat games.

Not entirely sure, but it seems lower numbers are better, aka the larger initiatives should go first.

Sadly not, but it sounds interesting. Certainly adds another tactical layer, as one side moves faster in one direction than another.

Phalon

The Phalon are in interesting bunch, building everything out of vat-grown organic materials, with their ships looking like giant space slugs.

I gave them TL 2 for no other reason than their huge focus on shell armor resulting in relatively few hull points overall. Their main form of defense was the Vapour Shroud Gland, a kind of shield that had to be turned on and off on command because the ship couldn't fire when it is on (I halfed its effect and had it be on all the time).
They only have one kind of main beam weapon, the Pulser. Before each combat, it can be calibrated to fire at long (L), medium (M) or close (C) range, with shorter ranges resulting in more damage. I initially wanted to adjust their BAS so that each configuration would yield the same ORAT, but then I just went and had everything take up the same amount of  SUs and calculated the final point cost for each possible configuration, bundling similar firing arcs into the same weapon slot.

They also have very few ship designations (Protector, Warrior, Great Warrior and Mothership), making the human codenames be very handy to determine their actual role.

Sa'Vasku

A mysterious and ancient race that nobody has actually encountered in person. Instead, people usually have to deal with their tentacled bioship constructs.

The Sa'Vasku had the gimmick of having a supply of "power points" to spend on their various systems, allowing them to change their speed and how much oomph their weapons have. I decided to go with an average spread for everything (though I might bump that in a revision). They go get a boost for their fighters and torpedo-equivalents because they no longer have to damage themselves to use them.

Well, the biggest change I had to make was cut the weapon ranges in half. I could've also done that to Thrust rating, but I figured that keeping the ships maneuverable would be more fun. This gimped the Fighters a little bit, but now they have all the good Fighter Traits.

Some of the smaller ships are also a bit tougher, as FT allows for Hull 1 or 2 ships. I settled for Fragile Systems, with some Hull 2 ships getting a point of ECM for a bit more survivability.

Converting the weapons was pretty straigthforward after figuring out the average damage increase from the beam weapon's exploding die mechanics. The only tricky part now are the Phalon, whose main gimmick is layered armor (which I will either handle with extra armor or just Reinforced Systems) and beam weapons that can be configured for Long, Medium and Close ranges before, but not during battle.
Ideally, I could just write down three lines of Attack Dice for each configuration and have each bank use the appropriate one. Now I just need to figure out how to set the BAS so that all configurations roughly end up with the same ORAT. I'm getting there, even if I have to make new weapons for each Thrust Rating used  lol

(Or maybe I just give up and make fixed configurations, or average everything into one weapon  :mrgreen: )

So I've recently tinkering with a Full Thrust total conversion mod, aka just stick with the Hull and Armor points form Full Thrust and convert the weapons so they more or less deal the same amount of damage as before. Since the amount of firepower on a FT scales a lot slower than the amount of punishment it can take, this results in most ships easily qualifying for a TL of -1 and sometimes even -2. I might consider doing a different conversion with more crossover-friendly Hull ranges.

With that out of the way, here's the New Anglian Confederation (the other Fleet Book 1 factions will follow soon. The aliens from Fleet Book 2 are mostly done, though I'm still tinkering with the Phalon).

EDIT: All the FB1 conversions are now available as attachments as Drake notations (one per faction). I also have Shipyard files, but they appear to be a bit big for an attachment. Still working on it.

Oh, I'm just tinkering with Full Thrust conversions, and the Sa'Vasku have organic ordnance launchers who can launch proper torpedoes with a narrow firing arc and a swarm-based anti-fighter weapon that covers all 360°. I might just take a middle ground and make the torpedoes more maneuverable and the swarm more sluggish.

I've just wondered: Is there anything speaking against having Dual-Mode weapons with different firing arcs? I suppose it works on a construction level as it just changes the SU cost, but I fear this could be abused for things like broadside weapons

Don't forget the huge amount of horror franchises who produce one "final" installment, but then continue to make further sequels anyways.
Sure, Starmada doesn't have much to do with horror movies, but I can say the same thing about the Maya  :mrgreen:

I never had a problem with the amount of dice rolled. It's actually rather satisfying to "open fire" on an enemy ship with a good handful of dice. I'm also a big fan of the old weapon stats, which I personally find easier to understand.

Then again, I'm also intrigued by the added crunch to the defensive stats 8-)
