I have updated my Battlefleet Gothic Imperial ship designs, which now include the larger vessels (battlecruisers, grand cruisers, and battleships.

This is my Starmada Nova Edition webpage:
http://stevegibsongames.wordpress.com/starmada-nova-edition/

And here is the pdf with the ship designs:
http://stevegibsongames.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/40k-imperial-ships-nova-edition-20130202.pdf

I tried to keep the designs simple, and to not include too many special abilities and firing arcs (thing which slow our games down a lot).  Hopefully, we'll try them out next Thursday.  I will likely add the Space Marine vessels in the next couple of days.

Hi all,

We will probably be running a Starmada game at GenCon this year, so I've been working on designs to use my BFG Imperial Navy vessels.  I have posted the conversions here:
http://stevegibsongames.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/40k-imperial-ships-nova-edition-20130131.pdf

I decided that for my broadsides fleets, I would give the ships the IJKL firing arcs, which means the cruisers can only use one broadside at a time (it saves a lot of points that you are paying for weapons you are extremely unlikely to use.) I also used seekers to represent fighter squadrons.

Hopefully I'll get to test out these designs this week or next.

Duskland is right, you can just use the CR of the ship.  Also, he also uses fleet scale minis and I am using bigger miniature ships.  I have no problem wrapping my mind around such tiny ships being so powerful or such large ships being so weak because his ships are all aliens (Centauri, Narn, Tyranids, Orks), so in my suspension of disbelief, I can rationalize the difference by thinking that each fleet is built by a race or empire with different technology.  When I fight him, I do ask the combat rating of each, and I mentally tag them so I know which is the bigger/lesser threat to me.

I got in a bind in my first game against his Tyranids, when I focused my fire/missile volleys on the ship that had the hull boxes of a giant battleship, but ended up having the weakest offensive firepower in his fleet (it's CR was about a light cruiser in my 'system.')  So now I ask him at the start.  But it is fun treating each battle as a meeting engagement with some exotic (but strangely, always hostile) alien race.  Then after each battle, the Terran Federation scrambles to modify its ships in that sector to face the new foe (forget the point defense batteries!  We need more marines!!!!)

I designed them to be generic ships, with fairly conventional weapons, speed, and defenses.  I also made the weapons as easy to run as a new player as possible (I used only FX and TR for the basic weapons, and FR for the spinal mounts)

I guess the only limiting factors are the ships with spinal mounts, which are cool but wouldn't 'look right' for every miniature.  I started spaceship gaming with Full Thrust, so all of the human GZG minis would work.

The ships I actually fly with these designs are Kzinti ships from the Star Fleet Starline 2400 series. I think they just look cool, and they're not as iconic as the Federation and Klingons (which also look cool, but are less 'generic' because of everyone's impressions of how they fight based on the TV shows and movies.

Hi all,

I posted my ship designs here.  I used the downloadable spreadsheet to design them, and I'm not sure how to best post them here:
http://stevegibsongames.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/terran-federation-2nd-generation-refits.pdf

I intended the ships to be more beginner ships, with standard movement, defenses, and weapons.  I kept the firing arcs very simple, keeping weapon traits to a minimum.  They are probably slightly more complicated than an ideal beginner fleet because most ships use missile banks (seekers.)

I base my ship designations based on the Combat Rating of the ship.  Here are my classification:
Class                        Combat Rating (CR)
Boat (BT)                    1-50
Cutter (CU)            40-80
Corvette (CT)            80-150
Destroyer (DD)            150-225
Frigate (FF)            200-275
Light Cruiser (CL)        250-350
Heavy Cruiser (CA)        300-500
Battlecruiser (BC)        500-700
Heavy Battlecruiser (BCH)    650-750
Battleship (BB)            700-1000
Monitor (MT)            1000+

Escort Carrier (CVE)        80-225
Light Carrier (CVL)        200-350
Carrier (CV)            350-500
Heavy Carrier (CVH)        500+

Hi all,

When facing Duskland's tyranid ships, we came a cross a question with Marines.  As his tyranid ships closed with my valiant Terran Federation ships, waves of tyranid warriors and other biological horrors (marines in the Nova rules) crossed the short distance and boarded my ships, ripping my Marines to pieces and seizing key decks.  Sadly, in the meeting engagement near Carter's World , the Battleship Vengeance was crippled, then boarded and seized by the tyranids.  This is the battle where I first faced his seemingly unkillable vessels (it was our first encounter with his regenerating ships with lots of armor and hull points, and the topic of a separate thread) In order to keep critical technologies out of the hands of the tyranids, the last surviving Terran vessel, the Cruiser Victrix launched a sizable volley of missiles to detroy the crippled battleship before jumping out to warn the colony and TFN headquarters.

So, getting to our rules question.  After the Marine boarding rolls are made and the number of successful boarders are determined, does the defending ship get to make shield rolls to deflect or block some of the successful boarding marines?

Also, are there any plans for a defensive only version of marines?  Maybe call them 'security' and make them cheaper since they would have no offensive boarding capability.  Along those lines, you could also have 'troops,' who could also be used only defensively in boarding actions, but would be very important in strategic or campaign games.  However, since they're not trained for shipboard fighting, and dependent on heavy equipment that can't be used in the narrow corridors of ships (armored vehicles, artillery, and low altitude grav/rotary aircraft), they would need to cross out two 'troops' boxes to cancel out each boarding marine element.

Thanks in advance!

I agree with Marauder.  I'm interested in the update pdf.  After spending money on all the Starfleet expansions, I'm disappointed that I need to spend so much more money to upgrade to the Nova versions.
