Topic: Thinking of buying GF.

Hello,

I used to play a lot of historical back in the day, though it was mostly Age of Sail or Ironclads.  I have alway been interested in WW1 and predreadnought era's rather than anything more modern.  So I have a few questions and a request.

Questions:
1)  Reading the forum GF is a hex based system.  I prefer hexless so how easy is GF to convert or does it already have hexless movement designed in?

2) Does it include instructions to stat out ships from historical references? I am interested in some obscure actions and have found that most games focus on WW2 and fail to give the information needed to stat out game cards if you have the ship data.

3) How does it "feel" in play?  I know this is a pure opinion question, but does GF play smooth?

4) are there any suppliments planned for non-WW2 interests?

and the request.

Back in 85 (86?) the guy who owned the local gaming store retired and sold off his stock.  I bought about 150 WW1 & pre-dread mini's at a discount in lot.  But as embarrassing as it is, after all these years I cannot remember the scale.  Can someone post a pic of a ship with a size reference (coin, etc)?  I am pretty sure they are 1/3000, but I don't have anything to compare to.

Thanks

Welcome aboard, Spence.
You can easily play GF on a hexless board. Different players use different methods, but I think simply converting one hex to two or three inches, or whatever scale you prefer, is the easiest.
There have been several ideas posted on how to determine gun arcs.
The easiest is to make yourself a protractor, with lines at 60 degrees.

All of the methods for converting real world data are in the rulebook, so you can stat up any ship that existed.

Well, I've probably got a biased opinion, but I feel it plays as easily as GQ, and is not nearly as intense as FG&D or Seekreig. It can get a little "dice intensive," especially in the pre-dread era scenarios, due to the sheer number of guns that ships had.

Yes.
As a matter of fact, there's only one WW II scenario in the rulebook. All of the others are WW I, Russo-Japanese War, and one from the
Sino-Japanese War (Yalu River).

I'll see if I can get a few pictures posted, but it'll probably be sometime next week.

Re: Thinking of buying GF.

Thanks for the reply.

After reading it I bought the PDF, mentioning Yalu River did it.  So many games covering the  preWW2 era seem to ignore the early actions and act like WW1 was all there was.

I will still need to read it so I can see what is what.
