Topic: ARES Battle Report - Demons vs. Franks, 500 pts

This battle used the basic kill 'em all scenario common to so many games.  big_smile

The Game Board with Deployment

Demons Edge                                                                Frankish Edge

Demon Warriorsx3

Cecilia the Wizardess was prepared for anything. The peaceful local orc population had been forced out of their village by demons. As a Wizardess, 4th rank, of the Council of Light, her job was to wipe out the menace and let the local citizens return to their peaceful lives.

Turn 1
The Frankish archers had no valid targets so they made minor adjustments to their position atop the hill. Cecilia took cover behind the hill because she new the evil Demon Wizard had a powerful blasting spell. The Demon Wizard then blasted one of the Knights who had accompanied Cecilia, but the other knight was made of stern stuff and he did not panic, even though he was wounded. The remaining knight then advanced towards the demon warriors, who also approached him.

Turn 2
The archers slew two barbarian cultists from afar and the unit was shaken. Cecilia moved towards the Demon warriors to hopefully cast a spell at some future time. The cultists advanced on the archers. The demon warriors howled in glee as they surrounded and slaughtered the last knight. And joy: the archers slew the mighty Demon Wizard with his nasty blasting spell.

Turn 3
The archers fired on the cultists once again, doing little. Cecilia cast a fireball at the demon warriors: only one was in range, and he was not harmed at all. They howled with laughter and advanced towards her, weapons ready.

Turn 4
Cecilia got to cast her fireball again, causing two wounds to a demon warrior, and shut up their derisive laughter. The Frankish archers also wounded a Demon Warrior as they advanced on Cecilia.

Turn 5
The Demon Warriors howled with glee as they destroyed Cecilia with their mighty demon blades. The archers replied by reducing the Cultists to only 1 trooper who was shaken, then they killed a demon warrior and shook up the rest of the evil soldiers.

Turn 6
The frankish archers slew the remaing cultist, then wounded the last demon warrior who routed.

Victory: The Franks! Six archers left, no demon troops remaining.

I'm finally getting the hang of how many troops to take in a game. The first time I played I had about a zillion guys on the table and it took forever, so I have to play actual skirmishes with these skirmish rules.  8)

Hope you enjoy my report.

You could try the fast play variant, I know kevin's got one somewhere...

perhaps thos variants could be housed in the mj12games wiki/faq

Yes, I know about the fast play version, but I prefer the regular type. I was just saying how Ares works perfectly with few figures and I should stop trying to cram in up to thirty figures because that just doesn't work.  big_smile Did anyone enjoy reading the battle report?

Re: ARES Battle Report - Demons vs. Franks, 500 pts

Hm.

I know we've played "regular" ARES with at least thirty figures perside.

However, I will not argue that it's a fabulous system for skirmish battles.  I use the Megablocks warriors for our ARES and that's a great-looking game to open up at a Convention with.

Nothing tops Kevin's penguins though.

I know you *can* play Ares with 30 figures, but it takes a lot longer. There were under 20 figs total in the bat rep and it lasted maybe an hour, which is what I wanted. If I want two hour slug fests I'll play warhammer.  lol And I assume the game will play quicker once I get a better handle on the rules, as well.

Thanks for the battle report! Nice also to hear some thoughts on skirmish sizes and game time. An hour is good!

Re: ARES Battle Report - Demons vs. Franks, 500 pts

I just finished an approximately 40 figure battle in about an hour and a half. I suppose a rule of thumb could be that games last about 60 minutes per 20 figures on the table. A great ratio as far as I'm concerned, because I don't have to paint a 70 figure army to get a decent game going.  big_smile Seriously, that's one of the things I love about Ares: Paint whatever suits your interest, and if you only have one or a few of something, it's easy to fit it in. Now I can buy Reaper figs to my hearts content and not worry that I'll need 12 of everthing to make units.  8)
