Topic: Terran Republic Fleet

I figured I would post up my first "complete" fleet built in S:AE. This fleet was originally designed about 8 years ago in for another game system, and converting them while retaining the feel of the originals was a fun if challenging exercise. The Terran Republic is the surviving political entity of a human-space-wide civil war between an assortment of nations and alliances. The fleet has a "Western" naming tradition because the Republic was formed from the alliance of Western Nations and their colonies that "won" the civil war. There are still non-republic Terran nations and colonies, but they are secondary naval powers  and most rely on the Republic for naval protection (several nations take advantage of this by pouring their resources into thriving merchant fleets). The Terran Republic has evolved in recent years from a capital ship heavy force to a fighter and missile doctrine. The reason for this change has primarily happened because of two invasions in the last two decades by the forces of the Outsiders. Unlike Terrans, the Outsiders have attacked with hordes of light vessels which, while individually fragile, overwhelmed many Terran warships. I will post the Outsider fleet when I have finished them. The only other known alien race in this universe are the Kor, a less-advanced, but extremely intelligent and adaptable species that has become a growing menace as they raid human colonies and outposts in search of resources and technology that they can adapt for their own use.
I am currently using the Terran Republic against an opponent that has used a very different design strategy from The Republic's earlier foes, so we shall see how they fare against this new menace!

Ares-Class Battleship
The Ares exemplifies the shift in Terran naval doctrine. Though classed as a battleship, it is designed first and foremost as a “bodyguard” for the fleet carriers. Lighter, faster and less armored than earlier designs the Ares still has sufficient protection and good “alpha strike” potential to defeat most of the threats that might penetrate a carrier's outer screen. Lacking the heavy particle cannon armament of earlier designs, critics claim that the Ares is at a severe disadvantage when faced with a capital-class opponent. The Ares is fast becoming the most common battlegroup flagship in Terran service.

Alexander-Class Battleship

Considered by most to be the finest “ship-of-the-line” produced by the Terrans.  With excellent protection and a powerful beam armament centered on a pair of heavy particle cannons, the Alexanders can stand toe-to-toe with just about any ship of similar mass. The weakness of the class lies in its light secondary armament, making the Alexander vulnerable to attacks by fighters and missiles. Despite its shortcomings, the Alexander will serve with the Terran Navy for many years to come.

Washington-Class Battleship

A class of 4 ships, the Washingtons are modernised and heavily refit Nelsons that were damaged during the Second Outsider Invasion. The main refinements were in secondary armament, improved screens, and superior sensor suite. The resulting modifications have allowed the 4 Washingtons to remain useful warships, and they will continue to serve long after the Nelsons have been mothballed. (Note: these ships were built with TL-1 Engines).

Nelson-Class Battleship

Designed when the Terrans were desperate to field enough capaital ships to hold the line during the First Outsider Invasion, the Nelsons represent several compromises. Rather than the heavy railgun batteries of earlier warships, the Nelsons feature an all-laser broadside. While many felt the class was doomed for failure, the fact that there are still a few in service today are a testament to the ingenuity of the original designers and builders. The Nelsons are slowly being mothballed as the new Ares-class ships enter service. (NOTE: These ships were built with -1 TL to weapons and Engines)

Warlock-Class Battlecruiser

The Warlock is a revolutionary warship design intended to fill the classic battlecruiser role.  Through speed and ultra-sophisticated stealth systems the Warlock hopes to avoid enemy contact until it can move in for the kill itself.  Critics have claimed that the class is an expensive “hanger-queen”, but so far the vessels in service have so impressed the admiralty with their capabilities that several more have been ordered. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL +1 Equipment)

Repulse-Class Battlecruiser

First used during the Second Outsider Invasion, the Repulse was one of the first Terran warships to mount the powerful spinal particle cannon. Despite the powerful main armament and a decent laser broadside, the class suffered a very high casualty rate due in large part to misuse. Terribly short in capital ships, commanders were forced to put the fast, but thin-skinned Repulse into the battle line. In those cases the weaknesses of the class were terribly exposed, and its strengths were wasted. Following the war, the remaining ships were shifted to duties that better suited their capabilities. Today, the remaining ships of the class have been retired, but have been retained in reserve after some refits. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL-1 Engines).

Constitution-Class Battlecruiser

At the outbreak of the First Outsider Invasionthe ships of the Constitution-class were the main combatant in Terran service. Well armored and well armed with a spinal mass driver and several heavy railguns, the Constitutions are more appropriately termed “pocket-battleships”. During the war, the class proved durable, but unable to close with their opponents quickly enough to get within the effective range of its weapons. Following that conflict, the class was quickly retired only to be reactivated during the Second Outsider War where its matter weapons were put to good effect supporting ground operations. Today the Constitutions are once again in reserve, with little likelyhood of reactivation. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL -1 in Engines, Shields, Weapons and Equipment)

Pegasus-Class Heavy Cruiser

The newest Terran heavy cruiser, the Pegasus has been designed for independent operation outside of the typical battlegroup formations. Border patrol, rapid reaction, and show the flag missions are the bread and butter of the class. As a result of the flexibility of the Pegasus, it does sacrifice some of the pure firepower of earlier designs, but the trade-off is seen as worthwhile.

Manticore-Class Heavy Cruiser

The Manticore uses many of the tried and true components of the successful Minotaur-class, with the largest change being the use of missiles as the primary offensive systems. Seeing its first action during the Second Outsider War, the Manticore proved to be a valuable asset to a battlegroup. In peacetime the Manticore has proven somewhat limited, leading to the more flexible Pegasus class for the classic cruiser role.

Minotaur-Class Heavy Cruiser

With a powerful beam armament and decent armor, the Minotaur is very much in the “baby-battleship” mold. A solid design, but hampered by the insufficient weapons range of many Terran ships of the time.  The Minotaur continues to serve the fleet in a secondary role, and considering the reliability of the class, should continue to do so for some time to come.

Andromeda-Class Heavy Cruiser

The Andromeda class is a heavily modified version of the earlier Nova class. The most apparent difference between the classes is the beam weapon armament of the Andromeda. Despite the potent main battery, the Andromeda faired poorly in the First Outsider Invasion, and was retired to reserve status following the conflict. Reactivated during the Second Outsider Invasion to replace losses, the Andromedas saw very little actual combat and were quickly mothballed again following that conflict. (NORE: These ships were built with TL-1 Engines).

Nova-Class Heavy Cruiser

The Nova was the main cruiser class in Terran service at the outbreak of the First Outsider Invasion. Like just about every human design of the day, the Nova was overmatched and easily defeated by its opponents. A contemporary of the Constitution-class Battlecruiser, the Nova is similarly armed with turreted railguns. The few surviving Novas have been maintained in reserve. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL -1 Shields, Engines, Weapons, and Equipment).

Jericho-Class Monitor

The Jerichos were rushed into service during the worst times of the First Outsider Invasion. No frills, well-armored heavy cruiser sized vessels built around a pair of particle cannons, the Jericho is a potent but limited vessel. It was hoped that the Jericho could hold defensive positions so that more capable ships could be freed up for mobile operations. Called by some “fortress cruisers”, the Jericho were little used during the Outsider War, but were found to be quite useful in deterring raids along the Human-Kor border. Today, there are still a handful of Jerichos still in service, all of them in systems threatened by Kor raiders. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL-1 Engines).

Achilles-Class Light Cruiser

A fairly typical “peacetime” cruiser design able to handle a variety of roles without specializing in anything. With no heavy energy weapons, the Achilles relies on missiles for its offensive punch, and must rely on speed and ECM to survive. Overall, the Achilles is a solid design, but one that not designed to go “toe-to-toe” with capital ships.

Warrior-Class Light Cruiser

A multi-role cruiser, the Warrior was built to add offensive firepower to a battlegroup's outer screen. As such, the Warrior is more often seen leading destroyer flotillas than in the company of other cruisers. Well armed for its size and fairly quick, the Warrior suffers from a lack of defenses both active and passive. This is a calculated risk as Warriors are to be used more as “super-destroyers” than ships of the line. The Warrior Class features a unique rapid-fire missile launcher that proved to be maintenance intensive and therefore omitted from later designs.

Valiant-Class Mine Warfare Cruiser

Based on the Warrior hull, the Valiant class is really a support vessel with specialized mine-laying and mine-clearing equipment. The large hull size for such a unit was necessitated by the desire to have a ship that could do both jobs, and have sufficient cruising capabilities so as to operate as a battlegroup component. The Valiant is a specialized design and much more expensive than most ships its size, and the Republic Navy has just a handful at their disposal. Current doctrine is to attach a Valiant class ship to each Victoria Cross class assault transport to “lead the way” through any planetary defenses that might be standing in the way of an assault force.

Aegis-Class Escort Cruiser

A new, purpose built escort cruiser design, the Aegis is capable of providing a battlegroup with massed anti-fighter and anti-missile fire. The Aegis uses the most sophisticated acquisition and targeting systems available to the Terrans at present. While this has dramatically increased the cost for units of this class, it has provided commanders with not only an escort, but an excellent vessel for scouting missions.

Apache-Class Escort Cruiser

The Apache class ships were heavily refit following the first appearance of Kor gunboats. As an ad hoc modification, the class proved to be fairly effective in screening Terran capital ships from the Kor attack craft, freeing up the human fighters to conduct their own strikes. While the class is no longer considered a “front-line” combat unit, many are still in service with patrol and system defense squadrons along the Kor frontier. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL-1 Engines)

Rapier-Class Destroyer

The Rapier represents a return to a more “traditional” destroyer. With standard missile launchers rather than the long-range missile launchers carried by the Trafalgars, the Rapiers are more flexible platforms while retaining some offensive punch against enemy warships. The Rapier has proven to be a solid and reliable design and should continue to be the main destroyer type in service for some time to come.

Trafalgar-Class Destroyer

Following the development of the long range missile launcher, Terran designers hit upon the idea of destroyer-type warships armed with the new weapon. They reasoned that a destroyer flotilla could salvo its missiles before an enemy could close with the main Terran battleline, and continue harassing fire throughout a battle. Terran commanders endorsed the concept and the Trafalgar class was born. While the ship has proven to be a solid and reliable design, the usefulness of its armament is highly questionable. The Trafalgar cannot carry enough missiles to maintain sustained fire on enemy forces, and mounting the launcher on such a light vessel means that it is easily lost to enemy fire that can reach it. Still, despite its flaws, many Terran commanders respect the extra punch the ships give them, and the design remains quite popular.

Mako-Class Destroyer

The oldest destroyer still in Terran service, the Makos continue to serve in patrol and system defense forces. A series of refits saw the armament of the Makos reduced to pulsar batteries, and this configuration has proven adequate for its intended role, and more cost effective for continued operation. The Mako is a very thin-skinned ship, and has crews have revived the ancient nickname for destroyer vessels, “tincans”. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL-1 Engines).

The Viper-class minelayers were built from the same hull as the Mako-class destroyers, but are considered a separate class rather than a refit. Originally fitted with mine clearing systems, these were removed with the deployment of the far more capable Valiant-class cruisers while the Vipers were optimized for mine-laying operations. The Vipers will likely remain in service for many years to come as no replacement is planned. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL-1 Engines).

Sparrow-Class Frigate

While frigates are of little value to a battlegroup, they are an integral part of Terran system defense forces. The Sparrow is an inexpensive and simple vessel capable of handling patrols and acting as a light screen for larger craft. The Sparrows are sometimes called “system defense boats”, though the Navy still officially classes them as frigates.

Gazelle-Class Frigate

The Gazelle class was an attempt to build a Fast Attack-type vessel that could operate as part of a battlegroup's outer screen. Though nominally effective at their intended mission the high attrition rate and terrible crew accommodations necessary in such a small hull made the Gazelle much less attractive. Rather than simply scrap the ships that had been built, they were transferred to system defense squadrons where their capabilities could be maximized. Gazelles are particularly effective in running down and dealing with “pirates” whether they be human or not.

Victoria Cross-Class Assault Transport

The Victoria Cross assault ships are the direct result of the lessons learned during the bloody assaults to retake the worlds lost in the Second Outsider Invasion. The assault transports used in that conflict were large and relatively well-protected, but experience showed that they could not disgorge their entire landing force while under fire from planetary defenses. As a result many troops never even made it dirtside before their transports were destroyed or forced to flee. The Victoria Cross class ships are smaller, equipped with better shields, have a larger proportion of landers to troops, and larger number of teleporters all aimed at getting the troops off as quickly as possible. Once troops are landed these ships are pulled back to safety, and can continue to support the operations as by taking in casualties from the assault.

Normandy-Class Assault Transport

The Normandy assault transports are a close cousin of the Emperor-class heavy carriers. Unlike the fighter carriers, the Normandys were provided with heavier armor and large stowage areas for marines and equipment rather than fighters. While the design carries a sizable landing force, it does not carry enough landers to bring down a majority of this force in one drop. This situation is generally worsened as assault landers are lost to enemy action. To help with the shortfall most Normandys operate with logistics transports that can deploy the needed landers prior to an assault to dock and load the follow up waves before the first wave of landers returns. (NOTE: These ships were built using TL-1 Engines).

Mount Fuji-Class Munitions Ship

As the Terran Fleet has grown more reliant on missiles as its main offensive weapon, it has had to develop methods to keep the launchers loaded. The Mount Fuji munitions ships are purpose built rather than ad hoc conversions, and they are the safest and most efficient way to transport missiles and resupply the Fleet's shooters. Specialized cargo transfer systems and magazines allow the Mount Fujis to safely transfer munitions to other vessels even while underway.

Portsmouth-Class Repair Ship

Like so many Terran Republic naval vessels the Portsmouth-class repair ships came from the hard lessons of the First and Second Outsider Invasions. Since the fighting was well away from many of the navy's shipyards, repair depots and even most small bases damaged vessels were forced away from the front for long periods for repairs. Many more ships stayed in place with un-repaired damage, leaving many units at less than 100% capability. To help eliminate or at least help alleviate this problem the Navy ordered a new class of repair ships that can be sent close to the front-lines to help keep the fighting ships at the front and in the best shape possible without complete shipyard facilities.

San Francisco-Class Logistics Transport

The San Francisco class ships are a new breed of “fast” logistics ships designed to operate as part of a Terran Carrier battlegroup. These ships have been built with greater speed and better defenses than the old Connestogas, though these improvements come at a slight cost in total carrying capacity. Because of their specialized role there is no intention of replacing the Connestogas completely with these ships, and they are unlikely to be seen outside of their assigned battlegroups.

Long one of the most important ships in the Republic Navy, the Connestoga class ships continue to be the backbone of any long-range deployment of Terran forces. While the Connestoga differs little from commercial freighters, it has some measure of defenses and armament, as well as specialized material handling equipment to assist in replenishing the fleet's ships in the depths of space. Though the Navy has invested heavily in the new San Fransico class, the Connestoga is likely to remain in service for the foreseeable future. Megellan-Class Survey Ship

The Magellan class survey ships are the most capable, sophisticated and costly exploration vessels in the Terran Republic. The primary goal of the handful of Megellans available is to locate and pinpoint the mysterious “warp links” used by the Outsiders to move through space instantaneously. While humanity tries to unlock the secrets of the known warp links, these ships hunt for previously unknown conduits that may one day carry another Outsider force into Terran space. So far the Megellans in service have been sweeping through the Republic's core systems, scouring them for any possible route for potential invasion. Whatever they may have found is classified at the highest levels. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL+1 Equipment)

Rather than rely on converted starliners, the Republic has constructed a number of hospital ships that would accompany the fleet train of any deep space force. Designed and built to military standards with defenses and drive systems unavailable to commercial shipping, the Von Behrings are considerably more survivable than previous ships of the type used during the Outsider Invasions. The Von Behrings have already made a name for themselves throughout the Republic conducting disaster relief and rescue missions much faster and more self-sufficiently than civilian shipping could ever hope to. These humanitarian missions are considered both good training and good public relations by the Navy.

Majestic-Class Fleet Carrier

The Majestics are the newest, largest, and by far the most capable fighter carriers in Terran service. The Majestic is designed to be the core of a Terran battlegroup providing not only fighter support, but fleet coordination. No expense was spared in the design and construction, and the ships incorporate better defensive systems, greater sensor capability and larger strike group capacity than all previous fighter carriers. The massive expense and complexity of the Majestic class ships have limited the total number available to the Terran Republic, and it will be decades before the full production run of this class is completed. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL+1 Equipment).

Eagle-Class Fleet Carrier

After the First Outsider War, Terran designers and tacticians were forced to re-evaluate the way fighter carriers were built and deployed. The result was the Eagle class fleet carrier. Though the Eagle carried a slightly smaller fighter compliment than the older Emperor-class carriers, it was faster and better protected, as well as armed with more capable defensive batteries. These taken in combination with a change in overall tactical doctrine meant that the Eagle was far more successful when used in combat during the Second Outsider War. Though now eclipsed by the Majestic-class, the Eagle remains an important component to the Terran fleet.

Emperor-Class Heavy Carrier

The Emperor-class was built with one goal in mind; to bring as many fighters to a combat zone as possible. While the Emperor did just that, it was thin-skinned and poorly armed for self-protection. This was not considered a flaw as the doctrine of the time called for carriers to stay well away from the “front-line” while sending their fighters forward to support the heavy ships of the line.  In actual combat the Emperors were easy targets for any enemy force quick enough to evade the human capital ships, and too slow to effectively elude any pursuit. Following the early disasters, Terran commanders were forced to add large screening forces to their carriers and move the entire formation closer to the battleline, so that the carriers were less inviting targets. Eventually the experiences of the First Outsider War would lead to the current “carrier battlegoup” philosophy in place today. The remaining Emperors are now in “mothballed” reserve, though they have been equipped to handle current fighters. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL-1 Engines, Shields, Weapons and Equipment).

Panther-Class Light Carrier

Termed a “strike carrier” by Terran designers, the Panther represents an entirely different way for commanders to utilize fighter carriers. Armed with Archangel anti-ship missiles and to be equipped with a version of the stealth systems in use on the Warlock-class battlecruiser the Panther will be a “first strike” platform like none before. While critics point to the extremely high cost and high maintenance requirements of the ultra-sophisticated systems, Terran planners view such a ship as wave of the future, and support its development wholeheartedly.  With the first units of the class now under construction the Panther should be entering service soon, and as with the Warlock will play an important role in future war planning. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL+1 Equipment)

Bulldog-Class Light Carrier

A simple and dependable light carrier, the Bulldog serves in a wide variety of roles with the Terran Fleet. Though somewhat cramped, they are capable of long patrols and escort missions. The Bulldog is the carrier of choice for these missions where it can provide the added punch of fighters without the need to protect or support a big carrier, and at a much lower operational price tag.

Mosquito-Class Light Carrier

These small, inexpensive light carriers were rushed into production during the First Outsider War. Never intended as a long-term solution, the class continues to soldier on decades later. Though now too old for any large-scale operations, the Mosquitos serve primarily in the convoy/merchant escort role. Despite several refits and the continued usefulness of the class, it is likely that the last Mosquitos will be soon retired and replaced by the smaller but newer Guppy-class escort carriers. (NOTE: These ships were built with TL-1 Shields and Engines).

Guppy-Class Escort Carrier

Though tiny when compared to the Terran fleet carriers, the little Guppy is still an important asset for Terran commanders. Extremely simple and inexpensive the Guppy is a perfect fit for the convoy escort and system defense roles. Though it carries just a few fighters, it can greatly improve the chances of a convoy’s survival by both scouting for and intercepting raiders. Usually, a convoy will have 2 or 3 Guppys assigned to it and a system defense group may have 4-6 of the little carriers to forward deploy its fighters in a crisis.

Wolverine-Class Assault Fighter

A variant of the Badger-class fighter, the Wolverine is designed to carry heavy attack missiles for anti-shipping strikes. Wolverines make up about quarter of the total Terran fighter force, and represent much of its offensive punch.
Fighter, Wolverine: #4/Speed:10 Defense: 1 Mode 1: Attack:4+/Traits: Mode 2:(Striker) Attack: 4+/Traits: Increased Rate of Fire x2 Increased Damage x2

Badger-Class Multi-Role Fighter

Rugged and reliable, the Badger is the standard multi-role fighter in Terran fleet service. The Badger can be used in a wide variety of missions from fleet defense to fighter escort and anti-ship attack. Some Terran planners would like to replace the Badger (and its variant the Wolverine) with a heavier, more powerful fighter. However, this would mean refits of the carriers now in service, and so the Badger should continue to serve for many more years to come.
Fighter, Badger: # 4/Speed:12 Attack:4+ Defence:1 Traits:

Fox-Class Interceptor

Lightweight, fast and extremely agile, the Fox is the Terran Fleet’s premier interceptor. Because of its specialized role, there are far fewer of the Fox in service than other fighter types, and it is typically only deployed on the big fleet carriers for area defense.
Fighter, Fox: # 4/Speed:14 Attack:3+ Defence:1 Traits: Interceptor

Ferret-Class Reconnaissance Fighter

A variant of the Fox, the Ferret provides the Terran Fleet with a very effective reconnaissance fighter. Because of its important mission, the Ferret is even more common than the Fox, and the type is very often deployed with light carriers.

Re: Terran Republic Fleet

As you may recall, a year or two ago I was converting my own designs from SAE to SFO, but ended up with none to do and then asked a few people if I could convert their designs. One of the fleets was this one, but I ended up with a problem regarding the Valiant--it was a minelayer without mines. Erik sent me (via PM) a corrected Valiant. After looking through this thread, I realised that the Valiant was still the mine-less version, so have decided to post it up. If Erik wants it taken down, I will do so.

And yes, this does mean that I'm starting to think of doing conversions from SAE to SNE...:D

No objection from me. In fact I should have corrected it myself. Hmmm. I never did put up any of the other factions I had for this setting. Maybe when I'm done my current project...though I'm not even sure where the original material ended up. Then again, I think you're the only one who ever looks at this stuff!  wink
Cheers,
Erik

Re: Terran Republic Fleet

Well, I would like to see the Outsiders at least...:D

Also, the designs round here might be able to spark an idea for another setting. I usually look through fleet lists when I'm starting to kick-start my imagination. For instance, your Terran Republic had inspired me to think at least of trying a 'history of the X', with their earliest warships through to their best warships either at the height of their power or before they got conquered, but the Nova TLs aren't distinctive enough to get the sense of an evolving fleet. I had toyed with using cargo to represent wasted space, but then the bar shut...;)
