As far as I can remember, I did the following for the space stations:

Build as a normal ship, but do NOT receive bonus SUs for reducing BTV. Instead, all space stations receive +25% to their SU total.

Then, do not include the mines in the SU total, as they are already deployed. However, they do add to the Combat Rating. The minefield around Celestial Queen is 12" in diameter, covering about 5.75 times the area that a large minefield would occupy -- since the large minefield takes 3 mine factors to generate, the Queen's minefield is equivalent to about 17 mine factors. However, this minefield also has the benefit of (1) being already deployed, and (2) being navigable to friendly ships. Thus, I counted it as being twice the "size" for point costing purposes.

Doing all this using the ISSB, I get a "ship" with -7 SUs remaining and a point value of 275... close enough, although I don't know why there is the 3 point discrepancy to the official point value.

Diamond Rock, on the other hand, comes out all wrong... it should be over 300 points.

One wonders if we may have discovered to first bit of errata...

I guess that depends upon what you're trying to achieve. If you want an RPG campaign price, then there's no easy answer -- I don't play Traveller, so I don't know on what the cost of a vessel is based, nor do I know what a general range of costs would be.

If you're just looking for a way to compare one ship to the other, there are several options:

1) Base it on the Combat Rating of the ship.

2) Base it on the mass of the ship (computed by the SXCA in cell N1).

3) Base it on a combination of the above two values. For example, a size 3 ship with 7 MPs, shields 3, and 3 "AB" weapons of range 12, 5+ to-hit, and ROF/PEN/DMG values of 2 each has a combat rating of 48 and a mass of 36.1 Kmt. One option would be to multiply the two together and take the square root; which in this case would be 41.6 MCr.

Just some ideas...

If it matters, I'm running Bye Designs' Spred32. It's a quarter sized Excel clone that understands all the relevant formula. The numbers and results work for a while, but if I try to change too much data, I get the unbudgable "#N/A" results.

The spreadsheet has been tested in Excel, and none of the problems you report occur in that program. Unfortunately, I am not literate enough in other programs (like Spred32) to tell you what is happening there... sad

What are the odds of shield mods? Maybe a shield that forces opponents to re-roll penetration?

That's a tough one to quantify, since the effect would be to square the effectiveness of the shield rating--i.e.:

Shields Normal Must Re-Roll
0 x1.0 x1.0
1 x1.2 x1.4
2 x1.5 x2.3
3 x2.0 x4.0
4 x3.0 x9.0
5 x6.0 x36.0

You could get away with a x3 modifier, perhaps...

Majestic Twelve Games is thrilled to announce that the very first miniatures designed specifically for one of our products are now ready for prime time!

Sculpted and produced by Iron Mammoth Designs, the Assault Trooper Squad contains six different poses.

A modified version of the Boer Stolid design, the assault trooper frame is now the de facto standard in human-powered infantry technology, though its expense limits its issue to battlefield veterans. As more and more suits are produced, the hope is that they might eventually help to alleviate the Confederacy's current reliance on standard infantry.

Each squad sells for $16.95 USD. Orders can be placed through our webstore.

Not yet familiar with Defiance? Well, here's your chance to check it out - for the remainder of the month of May, you can get both the Defiance: Vital Ground rulebook and the Assault Trooper Squad for a special price of $39.95 USD!

For more information on all of our products, please visit our website.

Or, can you mix and match?

They are not related at all. You can have a d4/x5 torp, or a d12/x1; it's up to you.

I like the ruleset for IS. I don't think it can be corrupted even by this gentleman I play against. But clarity shall be my avatar.

A laudable goal, but I doubt the issues your friend has brought up will be a big deal. The rules explicitly state that primaries can have a x1 multiplier; secondaries are allowed to be x2 -- so I don't think you can keep him from setting his weapons up that way.

Regarding the multiple keel bombards, there's nothing explicit in the rules about multiples, but having two or three of them on a ship won't unbalance the game -- that's the beauty of the combat rating. You can put whatever you want on there, but you'll have to pay for it...

The ships are not to any particular scale. The pictures on the counters are sized to fit the counter, which is of a varying size depending upon the hull size.

2,965

1) The intent is for only one keel bombard per ship.

2) Secondaries should have a lower damage value than the primaries.

Having said that, if you break both these guidelines, your ships should still be balanced.

Come on now... gamers are nothing if not annoyingly precise. When they want to be. And have nothing else to do. And think they know something about the subject.

Anyway, I still think it's a scary-looking design-- when can we play?

This is correct.

But anything under 4" is considered a "light gun" in Iron Stars (and Grand Fleets, for that matter) -- they certainly don't constitute a "secondary battery" by any definition. Historically, they would have been all but useless against armoured targets.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship … y_armament for a brief discussion of the topic.

Dreadnought (352 pts)
35 hull points (VL/5)
TR: 3, AV: 5

Now, if you're using "dreadnought" in the typical gamer sense of the word, meaning a really big battleship, then this certainly fits. And it's quite scary...

Indeed. The whole concept of the "dreadnought" was an all-big-gun battleship... it was supposed to make logistics and fire control easier, since you only had one size of shell to worry about, and all your guns fired at the same range and same ROF.

Well, yes, class notes are certainly just fluff.

"This is the design philosophy behind this ship"
"These are the priorities of this particular country about ship design, and this is why their ships are different from other countries"

I suppose that can be done rather easily...

Is there a practical limit for guns on ships?

I know Hull is 35, and Armour is 5, and Thrust 10, but what of Primaries, Secondaries, and Light guns?

You can put as many guns on a ship as your available SUs will allow. I believe the most SUs you can get is on a size 35 ship with -1 armour and -2 thrust, for a total of 490, giving you as many as 245 light guns!

A more realistic possibility is to stuff 13 d12/x3 primaries on that ship -- quite a punch!
