The "problem", therefore, is not that phasers get too powerful as the range decreases; it's that the expectation of survivability for SFB/FC players is higher than for Starmada players.

Daniel, the systems need to produce roughly consistent results... and if Star Fleet Mada is producing situations in which ships are dying, effectively, 2.5 times faster than the background says they should, then IMO that is a genuine problem.

One thing I have wondered about. When did a phaser "bank" (with a single targeting system) become able to fire at more than a single target?

SFU ships don't have  "phaser banks", they have individual phasers, each of which is capable of firing at a different target. They do have multiple phasers grouped into the same arc, such as the Federation CA which has six phasers in the saucer grouped into three "banks" in distinct arcs.

On another point: while phasers do get better at close range in the SFU, you need to be REALLY close (like right in the same hex!) before a single phaser can compete with the output of a heavy weapon. As written, that's happening at Range 5 or so, which means that a Federation CA is vaporising a Klingon D7 at that range. At that range, a CA should have a decent chance of inflicting serious damage. But having a better than even chance of blowing the target up? No way. I feel that the increased damage from a ship's phasers is adequately represented by the fact you're firing them more accurately at close range. Since most ships have a lot of phasers, this will result in phasers reliably dealing damage up close. Which gives the right feel.

I think any kind of increase at shorter ranges would be bad. SFU ships just carry so darn MANY phasers, that multiplying their damage at close range makes them overwhelming. Far deadlier than they are in the base games, at any rate. We can't reduce the # of phasers, because we need to be faithful to the background, but we can reduce the damage each does.

An extra couple of turns to a game is not a problem IMO. I dislike games which are not long enough for anything really interesting to happen. That was my problem with Warhamster 40K, the board was so large relative to the movement rates of the models, and the game lasted about six turns, so that the game was often won or lost in the setup.

Most SFU carriers retain their heavy weapons.

I think the simplest solution to the overpowered phaser problem is simply to remove Range Based ROF from the phasers.

Scenarios... I can probably do a conversion of an FC scenario and submit it, but I don't seem to have the knack of coming up with original scenarios for this game, I don't get the opportunity to play it enough and get inspired for ideas. (I'm Terry O'Carroll, I wrote up the scenario conversion that appeared in Captain's Log).

Your questions A and B, I can't help you with I'm afraid.  smile

Oops, didn't notice your question

The Mongoose line (working name: Starline 2500, this will change) will completely replace the 2400s, with every mini currently in the 2400 line replaced by a larger (by about 20%), more detailed resin mini. 2400-line pewter minis will still be available as a mail-order/special order through retailer item if demand exists. The process of replacing the existing line is expected to last about two years. There will be completely new minis in the new line, and it is possible there may be limited-run items as well. The minis will be available as boxed sets with the same ships as the existing boxes for Federation Commander/Star Fleet Armada.

Stingers were listed on the Ship Cards I saw.

Didn't see stats for them, but a Hydran ship should have the same number of Stingers as it carries in FC.

I can leak a detail or two... Hellbores hit the weakest shield facet (and are highly accurate), pretty much just like SFB/FC. ESGs are a defensive system that reduce the effects of drones, fighters and Hellbores (just like SFB/FC). From what I have seen of Stingers, I think they'll be pretty deadly... but they are deadly in SFB/FC.

Mongoose Publishing and ADB have signed a joint venture agreement, part of which involves Mongoose making 1/3125 scale resin miniatures of SFU ships. This includes the classic Federation CA (same class as the "Big E"), the Klingon D7, and Romulan Warbird. I've seen a 3D model of the Fed CA and it's much more detailed than the existing ADB minis.

Just a note: You can pre-order ANY ADB product for delivery at Origins, so if you wanted a copy of some other SFU-Mada title and wanted to save on postage (or get it signed), you can do that too.

This note from Jean Sexton:

We're also going to be demoing Distant Armada at Origins. Thursday and Saturday
from 9:00-11:30ish Jeff Johnson will be doing demos -- I'd love it if some of
the regular Starmada people could drop in on him -- I think he'd love some
serious competitive games as well.

ADB, Inc. has announced that copies of Starmada: Distant Armada is available to be ordered for pick-up at Origins. (The main print run and distribution to retailers won't be until next month I believe.) You go to the ADB shopping cart and select the "pick up at Origins" option, and you don't get charged postage. You can pick up your item(s) either from the ADB booth, or at the "Sing-A-Long" which is an event where SFU fans get to meet and talk with ADB staff. ADB always brings along supplies of the newest releases, but there is limited space in the truck so you may need to be quick. Pre-ordering guarantees you a copy.

I don't know whether or not there are any SFU-Mada events scheduled for Origins at this time. Will post here if I hear of any.

(I just finished proofreading the last of the ship cards for this, and they're looking good.)
